I didn't either, but I still have it recorded, so maybe I'll go back and listen.

But the guy who plays House is English, right? He does it pretty well, ya know 'cept for being so cranky and all.

I think that most women who try an American accent either sound far too "breathy" like Nicole Kidman or they sound like Maggie Smith in the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

Or worse, what's-her-name doing an English accent in Bridget Jones.

Hugh Laurie is indeed very good at an American accent. The first time I saw a promo for the House DVDs is the first time I heard him with his "real accent" and it shocked me.

Err...yeah. Then there are the full-timers, Americans like Madonna and Gillian Anderson, who move to the UK and suddenly are speaking like they've been Brits their entire lives.

Sophia Miles did a good job with an American accent on Moonlight...ok...sob....

I knew Madonna has a place in England, because it's up the road (figuratively speaking) to where I live. Didn't realise Gillian Anderson lived here too...

Didn't realise either of them were speaking like they'd been Brits either

They are?

Like agapetos, I didn't realise either.

Well, I think Gillian's having some practice speaking "American" again with reprising her role as Scully in the X-Files movie, and with hosting Masterpiece Classic here in the US....WHICH featured Billie Piper staring in Mansfield Park recently, WHICH brings us back to Doctor Who!

The problem with living elsewhere for any length of time (and Anderson lived in England for 9 years as a child) is that you do pick up the accent. I lived in the US for 13 months and while Americans couldn't pick up on the fact I'd picked up and accent, it was evident that I had when I came back to England. A year later, I went on holiday and had to rearrange my travelling arrangements en route and the person I was speaking to wasn't answering my questions, which irritated me. As I left the desk, the couple behind me commented on the 'irritated American'

Who is going to be in Dr Who again soon isn't she?

I watched Black Adder a LOT a few years ago which he was on so I still find it weird to hear him speaking in an American accent.

Yes, and I'm very excited about his replacement. Steven Moffat is taking over, and he's the one who wrote "Blink", as well as "The Girl in the Fireplace", and "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances". If he can keep the whole series as excellent as those episodes, it's going to be a real treat. The upcoming two-part "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead" was also written by Moffat.

So, what did our American friends think of Part 2 of the Sontaran Strategem last night?

That's kinda funny ~ I've been wondering if you'd get Euro instead of Dr Who, as we didn't get it last night.

Manda, I missed that ~ but I saw the trailer after Euro.

The new trailer was alright. I felt like they were trying to make up for Eurovision by showing as much of Rose as possible. I am happy for selfish reasons that Rose is back...but I'm afraid that we won't be able to get rid of her again. At least, not until Steven Moffat takes over in 2010. I kinda would have preferred to leave that a closed sad chapter in the Who universe. But the human in me wants to see everything work out, even though it's impossible for it to.

I was wondering what happened. I was afraid something was wrong with my DVR. I knew BG wouldn't be on because they said so but they didn't say anything about the Dr.

As for Hugh Laurie, he is very British indeed. I remember seeing him years ago with Stephen Fry on the old "Jeeves and Wooster" series. It was actually a shock for me to hear him with an American accent after associating him for so long with the nasal upper-class British accent a la Prince Charles. I saw him interviewed on Leno a few months ago and loved him. He was very modest and self-effacing, completely unlike House but very British. It just shows what a great actor he is. (The same thing goes for Tennant. He's actually Scottish and so it's weird hearing him speak with his native accent.)

Speaking of accents, I lived in Britain for three years and have a British husband. People here in the States have said several times that I sound British. I take it as a compliment. Part of it has to do with the fact that I find myself "speaking British" a lot of the time. I like to joke that I'm bilingual in English. It feels weird to be watching the Dr. over here in the States now after watching it back in Britain. I missed seeing him on Christmas Day...

As for pedigree, I'm a newbie. I had heard of the show before, but I didn't start watching until this latest incarnation. My husband grew up watching it and has had to fill me in on the background. I really loved the first couple of seasons but stopped watching last season because I didn't think it was all that good after Rose left. I started watching again just out of curiosity and I must say, it's very good. I've been pleasantly surprised.

I do hope they don't try and force a romance between the Dr. and Catherine Tate. Just the thought makes me shudder.

I don't think Donna would go for that

speaking of Donna...I'm trying really hard to like her, but I'm not having much success.

I dunno what it is about her that just rubs me the wrong way, but I keep watching hoping for something in her to connect with me better.

I just think she's rude, self-righteous and far too bossy in every episode and she appears to be (although she probably isn't) much older than any other companion the doctor has had before...which is why I expect her to be a little more cooperative.

Maybe I'm just crazy

Age can make ya stubborn I do agree with her being one of the older companions the Dr has had though.

I know she cares, it all just seems to contrived. As though the writers make every scene this emotional battle between Donna and the doctor. Not every issue should be a battle, not evey scene has to allow for her to go off on her own tangent.

I guess I'm being as bad as her now

I felt that way when they introduced her back in the premiere of Season 3. I was so disappointed when I found out they were bringing her back. I don't know what the writers were thinking. Actually, I know what they were thinking. "This show pretty much isn't the same without Rose so I guess we can plug anybody into her role. Who's available?" It's not a pretty sight.

Back in Britain she's famous for doing a variety sketch type of show where the most popular of her characters was an obnoxious teenager. I kid you not, she actually played a working-class teenage girl who was always telling the world what she thought about them. That's why my jaw dropped when I heard last year that they were putting her on Dr. Who. She was the last person on earth I would have imagined on that show.

I just did a search for Tenant and Tate on the Internet Movie Database. Tate is only 3 years older then Tenant (1968 vs. 1971). Could have fooled me. She comes across as much older. Tenant also looks like he's younger. He and I are only a year apart.
