Hi everyone. I wasnt sure where to post this topic at, sorry if this is the wrong area. Recently I was thinking about a odd experience I went through many months ago. I was in my bed falling asleep like normal. I remember doozing off. Then later on, (from this point on, I was in a conscience dream like state) I remember my teeth began to chatter non stop, like when your really cold. I tried to reach up to my door handle, but it felt like I didnt have a ounce of strength. It felt like my body itself was in fear. Eventually I remember saying something like "In the name of Jesus please help me" and then I snapped out of the state. What bothers me is that I could feel my teeth chattering, while in a conscience dream like state. Like my body shutdown but I was still awake. I'm sure it wasnt a dream, because I still had normal conscience thoughts. Was this a demonic encounter? Or does anyone have a natural explanation?

Google sleep paralysis. It is fairly common.

The explanation is very natural. I've had similar dreams where I wanted to scream or move but could not for a long period. Eventually I could make a sound or move and then I woke up. All of them that I remember like that occurred while I was on my back. When I lay in certain positions, mostly on my back, oxygen gets cut off (apnea) and scary dreams happen - my brain is using those nightmares to wake me up enough to overcome the very normal paralysis of sleep so I'll breathe.

I experience this often. Pretty much weekly. Is is called sleep paralysis and is a from of narcolepsy. There are some mild sedatives and other meds that can treat it. Your brain is simply waking up about 30 seconds or so before your body does. It is very frightening. I pray to Jesus for help when it happens. If I keep trying to move I eventually wake up in a few seconds (that seem like an eternity). I have learned to sit up and clear my head for a few seconds before trying to fall back asleep or it will happen again almost immediately. It happens almost always during a time where my normal sleep patterns get disrupted. Stress, overworking. Also, when my blood pressure gets too high it happens more. I take it as a sign to check my bp! There is a dangerous practice that uses this spiritually. I cannot remember what it is called. But it is dangerous and I think of the occult. So be careful Googling this.

I'm wanting to come in on this topic because at one time or other we all have those kinds of dreams. I believe it can be from stress, but as one of the other writers said, it could be from something dangerous. Something happened to me not too long ago. It is something I have never experienced in my life. God has given me many dreams, visions etc. I've been walkin' with the Lord for over 20 yrs. A friend of mine gave me a book..a very good book, and in that book it told about the person (author) and how someone--believers or non believers--put a curse on him. It took him quite a few years to come out of it. There are those kinds of people who will read that book and are not born-again believers. It is a scarey thought but it is worth mentioning. There's more I could write on this but I'm going to shelve it for now. Calling out the name of Jesus is Mighty and Powerful...and He is above all powers....all principalities in dark places... Thank God for this! "Every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord."....whether they want to or not (heard that last little bit from a great singer God is using for His work)..

Something similar happened to me as a kid. I was not under stress. In fact, I was very relaxed. I went back to sleep and woke up later as if nothing unusual had happened. It never happened again.

My Mammaw used to call these Night Hag visitations. Being Cherokee she believed in a supernatural explanation for them but sleep paralysis is the best explanation for them.

Oh it's real...it's not just physical or medical..it's definitely demonic attacks...part of the spiritual warfare! I've had this several times...one time I was being harassed in my sleep...and I heard a voice telling the demons to leave me alone...When I woke up, I saw a beautiful gold cloud in the corner of my room...I knew it was the Lord delivering me from the attack...(at the time I was living in an apartment that had a demon in it...I couldn't sleep in my bedroom and one time I heard what sounded like a goat bleeting. These things happen and it's no fun at all. i also saw a pitch black dark cloud, the opposite of the gold cloud...and later, found out that is a common siting in so called 'haunted houses' etc. The week of Easter week last month, I had attacks every morning...where I was paralyzed and could hardly whisper Jesus...one morning I woke up from an attack...and feeling a pins and needles sensation over me...I started worshipping the LORD and immediately the thing lifted off of me....Praise and worship is a type of weapon we can use in these situations! (by the way, Easter week happened to be an high occult holiday...which kind of makes sense since the celebration of the Resurrection was changed from Passover to the Roman pagan holiday...Easter--Ishtar. that's for another topic, though.

Cherokeehippie, What of the fact that no such phenomenon is mentioned in the Bible? What of the fact that many of us have experienced sleep-paralysis (I have) and did not sense any demonic attack nor any need to call upon Christ to give us relief from demons? What of the fact that the phenomenon went away, often by itself without any ill effects? Me-thinks that the idea that it is demonically induced is caused by one's emotions of fear.
