I had my thyroid removed at age 16 due to cancer and have taken thyroid pills ever since (I'm in my 40's). Other than still dealing with the cancer, taking the little pill is no big deal. I'll be praying.

Pengie,

Have you had to ever deal with your meds being off and needing to be adjusted as you grew and changed? If yes, what is like when they are off? I think that is my main concern with the pill. I hope I never find myself in a position where I can't get them or afford them.

My mom has her levels checked once a year, I believe. I think it was more often in the first couple years, while they tweaked her medication. It's also not very expensive, as medicines go. She had no trouble getting them even last year when she was unemployed and had no insurance or money.

Yes - a combination of flesh, scatter brain and fiery darts can disrupt our homeschool too.

I keep worship music on most of the time - even if it's very low as not to interrupt school work and that seems to help. We also pray aloud if it seems like we truly are being harassed by the enemy and that works too!
We give our kids candy for memorizing verses. We are paying them for reading the whole Bible - yes I know that they should read it anyway but teens are motivated by $ and it's getting the word in them. In fact, my son has started coming and reading scriptures to me now!

Lost books...
My older kids have all tried this. They "lost" their books on purpose because they don't like doing it and think that will get them out of the responsibility. They have also truly lost books in the mess of their room by not putting things away where they go. I just give them something else to do for that subject until the book is found and I tend to give them very boring or long assignments to motivate them to find their book faster if I think they are just unmotivated to look.

Games are fun for math in K - 3rd - Monopoly Jr was one of our favorites for those years.

Duh du du duh! Brandon has finished all his Key To books! Yay!

Poor kid-he was the guinea pig and it took longer than it should have to figure math out. We wasted years[:o] But he's about up to speed now.

I put Indonesian Chicken in the crock pot and now my hands smell like garlic and ginger. yum!


The boys are workin at my grandfather's this afternoon. He is having electrical problems with his sprinkler system. So they have their voltometers, soldering irons and gloves all packed up,lol.

I have to go off my synthroid every 3-4 years to check for the cancer. I must stay off it for 6 weeks. These are very hard weeks. My entire thyroid is gone and the thyroid controls your metabolism. As time goes by I slow down to a nothing but a mess of goo. Each time gets harder then the last. I am figuring this is due to age. Fortunetly, the medicine isn't costly and there is a generic if your Dr approves it, (Mine doesn't.)
Trust me, once you get adjusted, you don't want to miss it. The Dr can actually take away your driving privilages if you are hypo-thyroid. That threat almost happened to me last year when I forgot to take my meds for a string of time.

Lisa, as meds go, synthroid is really no biggie. Since you are an adult, once you tweak things to the proper dose for you it really isn't likely to change much. Trust me, if your dose is off, you will feel it. Many people on synthroid, once they are comfortable with the process, will either take an extra pill or hold a dose if they are feeling "off," just like diabetics learn to adjust their own insulin. Trust me, there are far worse meds you could be on and far worse things you could have to do. I'm not trying to make light of your situation - I know it's scary and you know I'm praying for you - but it won't be nearly as bad as you are probably thinking it is.

Synthroid is cheap. If you ever can't afford it, call me and I'll buy it for you. I think I can swing the 10 bucks. [;)]

Congratulations to Brandon on finishing the math books! S'pose he could have a chat with Erin while we're out there, let her know that he did it and actually lived, that sort of thing? [sm=aside.gif]

I signed up to teach ballet for the next school year at co-op. Now I just have to figure out what supplies I need, and where I can get them, and how much they are, and how much to charge for the class, and how big I should make the barre, and how many kids I should allow to be in my class. Whew! I think I signed up for a lot of work.

I've already got a headache, but mostly from driving. Our car is one of those that rides nice and gentle, but over lots of little hills it tends to make me carsick after awhile. I've been driving too much today already. There's just too much packed into this month. We've got a Ladies Night Out for tomorrow with the church ladies, on Saturday I'm driving back for my sister's baby shower, on Sunday we're having a couple over to grill out, Sunday evening is our first choir practice (I started a choir) and Tuesday is Women's Ministries meeting, the next Thursday is co-op and then a 4-H meeting, next Friday is Joy's birthday sleepover, the week after that is Share-the-Fun, the next couple of days after that is the Vision Team retreat and the next day is our big Passover celebration. Oh, and there's also a Wednesday somewhere in there that our church is supposed to fix lunch for a ministry team coming up from Virginia to work on a house for troubled girls.

I think I'll just go back to sleep and wake up on May.

... and I thought baseball was bad. I don't understand what Little League pays for anymore. We have to pay the fee for the kids to join, do a fundraiser, pay for the umps out of own pocket, work at the confession stand, hire or be a base ump AND the kids don't even get to keep their shirt at the end of the year, they have to return it. Anyways, I am stressing out about finding an umpire for a few games. I think I might end up spending between 75-95 dollars on umpires.

Our oldest son wants to play baseball, so we're in the process of figuring all that out. Luckily we don't have to be in charge of that. I don't really like being in charge of things, but my girls all want ballet lessons and it's cheaper to do it this way instead of paying over a hundred dollars a month so they can all dance.

Wow, Lisa, you sure got involved in a lot of things right away. It makes me tired just reading your post.

Annie, little leagues must vary a lot. All we had to do was a fundraiser, keep score, and pay a nominal fee. Maybe we had good sponsors that covered a lot of the expenses. The kids got to keep their shirts, we only had to pay to have their names and numbers put on them.

Yes, different areas must have different rules for Little League, because this is the first time we've had to be this involved. WE also had to clean the fields from winter and we are suppose to buy our children their own bats and helmets.[&:]

It was definitely our intention to get involved in a lot of things. We want to be able to reach out to our community, and in order to do so you've got to know people and get involved in things. The thing that makes it a lot easier is that getting involved is part of my husband's job description now. It sure makes it nice to be able to not have to work around a job for all of this. There's no way we could be involved in so much if he were still working at Walmart.

That's sounds like a lot for t-ball. My kids have played 3 different sports through the township:

DD1 soccer: About $70 I think for a season. You do have to buy a uniform, cleets, etc. However, the uniform was only about $20 and then the cleets/practice socks/shin guards were whatever they were. I don't remember. However, that's not a cost every season. As long as the uniform fits or they get a hand me down they don't need to buy a new one. THey have fall and spring soccer. DD has played 3 of the last 4 seasons. We had to buy new cleets this spring but not a uniform. Her shirt still fit and she got a pair of shorts from another girl a year ago. SOme coaches need them to have their own ball too. We got a package with a ball/socks/shinguards/cleets all together.

DD2: basketball through the boys' club. That is about $75 too. They have practices and then games twice a week. No practices once the games start. They get a T-shirt with a number on the back that they get to keep.

DS: t-ball. This is about $40. It's 2 nights a week for the month of May. This is an instruction league and they only play among themselves and the coaches ump. They get a t-shirt and a hat that they get to keep.

In Soccer they ask the parents to provide drink or snack after one game.
Last year for t-ball the coach provided a snack after the game.

If they want pictures those are extra.
In basketball they get a medal or trophy.
DS's t-ball coaches bought them all trophies last year. They asked parents to pitch in but if you couldn't afford it they covered it.
