Zam,
I hear you and agree, but it's a numbers game. Far more people join gyms with the goal of losing weight than getting bigger, stronger or even"fitter" for that matter. Also, too many losing "weight" that is actually muscle, which is the last thing desirable.

I understand it all. It still frustrates me, though. I have a brother in law that's obese. His wife has been pushing him to do something to shed the weight. He drives by my gym everyday to pick his kid up from school. I have been encouraging him to come in and just do something. I think he is the author for the book of excuses. I know his goal is weight loss. he's tried every diet known to man. After losing a few pounds, he puts it all right back on. He asked me how much weight I lost after begining my exercise porgram. I think he was shocked when I told him I hadn't lost any weight. I've lost inches in the waist, but I've gained inches in the chest and shoulders. I keep trying to encourage him to start, to begin working on the foundation.

zamdad, guys like that need to be concerned with survival, not what the scale says! It blows my mind how people walk around every day in denial about what they're doing to their bodies, endangering their health and putting their families at risk. On the one hand I know people have to start somewhere and a contest like that can encourage people. But, at the same time, for every person who starts out just wanting to lose weight and gets in and learns what it takes to get healthy and gets motivated, there are probably ten who get frustrated or lose the weight just to gain it back because their focus was off or they didn't understand what's effective and what's important and what they should really be doing. So I agree, it's not the way to approach fitness at all.

Christianiron.com -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/7/2008 8:46:29 AM)

Did you guys see the "The Office" episode where they had a weightloss contest? Hilarious, but probably had some insight into the reality of it not being such a great idea. I think some people have a bad experience with a gym and/or diet and give up on the whole thing, unfortunately.

Konstantinos -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/7/2008 9:43:55 AM)

i think the biggest problem is they dont want to lose weight for themselves, but for the world

Konstantinos -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/7/2008 3:23:15 PM)

Konstantinos -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/13/2008 5:14:06 PM)

5*3*40, 3*3*50, 2*3*50 snatch

my technique is getting better and better. weights going up straight more, tried to get fast under the bar today

clean and jerk worked up to 75, missed the 75 jerk and half of the 70 ones.

back squat 3*3*105
pulls 4*3*90

Konstantinos -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/14/2008 2:42:15 PM)

i wont even mention warm ups

snatch 4*3*40, 3*3*50, 2*2*55 got 3/4 55s new PR, felt light and all :)
clean and jerk worked up to a couple 70s. in the jerk either ill put so much strength that when i try to split my legs they split just a few inches(though it would qualify as a lift), or ill put too little strength and split properly but the bar wont go up enough so i end up missing it. im guessing if i dont jump, but push without having my toes go off the floor too that may fix it.

front squat 3*90, 3*92.5, tired by now.

104.7 kgs

2 records today [;)]

Konstantinos -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/17/2008 5:08:15 PM)

clean and jerk

1+1*40, 1+2*50, 2*1+2*60, 2*1+1*70, 2*1+1*75, 2*1+1*80 PR

cleans are easy, jerk still need to get used to the technique.

back squat 5*70, 3*80, 3*90, 2*2*95

back exercize 1*20, 1*15 with 5 kg plate

Konstantinos -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/18/2008 4:53:00 PM)

csl7037 -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/19/2008 7:42:50 AM)

Konstantinos, you're doing great!

Dh wants me to do "Power 90" with him. It looks interesting and might be fun to do together. It says you need dumbbells up to 70 pounds but there's no reason at all I'd ever need that (dh would). I have a friend who had bowflex adjustable dumbells up to 50 pounds she was going to put in a yardsale yesterday - we snatched those up! Her dh has never taken them out of the box....we lucked out there so we might try this. Dh might have to do some of it at the gym if those 50's aren't enough.

The last couple months, I've not done any organized workouts. I've been doing a lot of upper body and pushing myself there but taking it kinda easy lower body. With the classes I'm teaching, it's just too much to push my legs. My hamstring was really sore and not getting a chance to get better. I think it might be getting better now. I'm going to start slowly there, though.

Miss Giggles -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/19/2008 10:33:25 AM)

Is that the same as the p90x? It looks neat. I was going to start working on getting to be able to do a pull up and that series has you do them too. Those adjustable dumbells looked cool but I wasn't spending the full price on them.

Another good website that has you do hard core weight workouts is crossfit.com

They have gyms where you can take classes but they are very expensive.

csl7037 -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (10/19/2008 4:49:42 PM)

It is the same...I'll do a little happy dance if I can ever do a pullup! The info says you may not think you can do what they're doing but it promises that it'll get you there.

These dumbells came with a stand and everything....full price was like $600 on bowflex.com! I can't believe my friend's dh never even took them out of the box. Dh and I need to look through the system more and figure out how we're going to do it. I don't think we can really do it together with the one set of dumbells. But I'm not crazy about doing it at 5am with him anyway!

I never lift serious weights, only silly ones. [sm=dance.gif][sm=funny.gif][sm=icon_smile_roll.gif][sm=icon_smile_tongue.gif][sm=Llol.gif][sm=yummy.gif]

Sorry folks, I couldn't resist.

I get this sense of humor from my darling husband. After 30 years of marriage, it's rubbed off on me!![:D]

Konstantinos -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (11/13/2008 3:54:06 PM)

dont be sorry i liked it

85 power clean and jerk

90 power clean easy, cause as the huge guy there says its not how much the weight is, its how crazy you are that matters!

my jerk is awful i dont get how i can easily power clean 90 and find it so hard to jerk it, or even less weight.

Great job Konstaninos, keep up the good work! I don't do any Olympic style lifting and don't go real heavy anymore. I did do a 405 lb below parallel squat for 6 reps on 3 hours of sleep the other night.
Someday I hope to visit Greece. I hear it's very beautiful.

Konstantinos -> RE: Any serious weight lifters here? (11/13/2008 4:48:24 PM)

thats a 440 1 rep or so.

i wonder whats heavy for you then!

Woo Whoo!!!
