My sentiments exactly. Am I getting paid for doing chores? Yes, I have food, clothing, shelter and various other things because I am working, just like I expect of them. We are a family, not employers. If we were employers, my children would be expected to do a lot more.
lol I turned to the next page and saw the Ellie-Mae had the same idea, only more dramatically.

I am feeling "fairly" pleased. We had a round table meeting to discuss the fact that they have not solidified their chore lists and schedules. I told them that they need to be solidified and done by lunch. All the kids came together and worked out the details of their schedule and got to work on them. I had to get after Timothy as he seems to think that no one ebver means business and Sarah is getting help with the commons because of it's level of difficulty.
I have also gave them a deadline for mornings. The first 8 things on their morning list needs to be done by 8. Sarah needs to make sure that the lists get marked off. we will see how that works.

I have some homeschooled and some not. They all do chores. They all did chores before I homeschooled. If you are over the age of 2 (under the age of 2 your job is helping and growing) you have at least 1 job.
They don't get paid for that. It's called being a part of a family. Everyone does something to make it work. If ds1 complains I sweetly offer to trade jobs with him. So far he won't take me up on that.
We do have allowance but that is a separate thing entirely.

Okay, here is a question. I am having them "earn" marbles for working dillegently, helping out cheerfully etc.... they loose marbles for talking back, picking on each other, name calling...etc..... One marble is worth 5 minutes on the PS2 or Computer. They also get a marble for reading a chapter in a book that is NOT their everyday school work. I have just started this today, so we will see how it goes. They do have a limit on how many marbles can go towards the computer or ps2 each day, all extra marbles can be worth 5 cents. I think 5 cents a marble might be affordable for us..lol... A new day is starting over earning for the ps2 or computer.
Do you guys have them "earn" priveledges?

Yes I do. Free time on the computer, friends over, going to friends, special(extra dessert), maybe mom doing a chore for them, etc.

we have a privilege chart...it is tied to their behavior and their chores getting done. If either of those need tweaking on their part then they can lose privileges. We have our chart set up like a rainbow....red being the most fun, on down to blue. If you are on a color you can do everything on or under that color. We got the chart order, etc from Lisa (Ellie) and tweaked what she used....made it shorter (I think her chart has something like ten levels?) and made it fir out family. Here are our color sections....
Play Outside
Swim
Do Gardening
Watch TV or Video
Computer Games
Video games
Draw
Color
Play games
Read a Book
Play with toys in room
Do Chores
Schoolwork
Clean
Spend time thinking
For the tv and computer games they also have chips...every week we start off new with each of them getting 14 chips. Each chip (we use poker chips in different colors for each kid) represents 30 minutes of tv, computer time, or movies. They have to pay for time they use and when it's over they are done for the week. Exceptions are educational things (for school) and family events (if Daddy comes home and says "Family movie night" tonight...or if whoever is in charge of Family Night chooses to watch a movie). They lose all remaining chips if they go below orange on the rainbow chart and can not earn that back until the next week's start. Any left over chips do not transfer to the following week. If they want to earn back privileges on the chart (with the exception of earning back chips) they can do so. First they have to have an attitude change of whatever knocked them down. Secondly they have to do something to prove they really want to earn it back. Usually that is taking over some of my chores and doing a certain amount of work that isn't necessarily "theirs" to do...or that they would normally do. We have only had that one come up once so far...Jake lost the privilege of playing outside, so he earned it back by doing the dishes for two days (well, one evening, and the next day all day).

i am going to have to give our chore chart (now done with Ladybugs) a reboot. They have all been dropped pretty low due to vacations and poor attitudes. I think we are finally getting to a point where we can make it seem like a more positive thing again.
I am glad to hear that your rainbow is still holding up.

I use firefox as my browser window, and it has a spell checker on it...it underlines the word in red, and you can right click to see a lits of possible words it could be....lol. CW used to have a spell checker...I miss that.

Sarah, that rainbow thing is such a good idea! In some ways, it reminded me of the card system I used to use with my preschoolers. They all started the day off with green. Yellow was a warning, and red was a time out. Each day that they were on green at the end of the day, they went home with a ticket. They could turn five tickets back in for a prize. Of course, since it was a preschool it was strictly a behavioral thing, not a chores thing, but it worked out fairly well. But the rainbow seems to offer a little more flexibility. He, He, now I want to use that system somewhere, somehow!!
P.S. Your kids think gardening is fun?  Wow!

Gotta tell you. Today a cool thing happened. My 12 year old daughter saw that I was pretty behind on our laundry, due to a crazy schedule this week. It was definitely laundry mountain down there. She didn't tell me, but she kept the laundry going all day until the mountain was not more. She did it all. We have a front loader and she did about 8 loads and she folded and put them away as well. All the time, she kept up on her school work. I didn't have a clue she was doing it. She sure got rewarded tonight. She sure was a blessing. WOW!!!

yes we do.
My older two kids get 1 hour of electronic privileges (computer, games, tv)a week straight up (that can be taken away...but it is theirs)....they can earn up to another hour by doing at two hours of excercise and outside play.
My 8 year old gets 30 minutes of electronic play...and she can get another 30 minutes by doing an hour of excercise and outside play.
the two littlest ones get 15 minutes and can earn another 15 by excersising up to 30 minutes (or outside play).
keep in mind...this is for the WEEK...not per day.
electronic time for the older two EXCLUDES schoolwork that needs to be done on the computer....it is for entertainment purposes that the time is limited and must be earned.

I wished I would have read this when it first came out! I hope it's not to late to chime in!
I have 2 sons that homeschool. The oldest is 18 and the youngest is 16. They are responsible for sweeping and mopping a 2,000 square foot tile home in Guadalajara, Mexico per my request which is usually twice a week. They are also responsible for making their beds, keeping their room straightened, and taking turns washing dishes by hand because we don't have a dishwasher. They need to pick up dog poop when I ask them to. At this age, they have learned how to do their own laundry. I still do it too but they know how to help and help me fold. They are also responsible for helping us load and unload equipment upon demand, setting up a platform with sound equipment and instruments. They are paid $100 pesos about $10 a service that they play for worship. Usually, once a week sometimes twice. They aren't able to work outside jobs like other kids in the US so having a $40 a month in their pocket is a joy! Because they're being paid to play they are responsible for maintaining the instruments they play. Guitar strings or drum equipment.
When they were younger and we lived in the US, one dusted and the other vacuumed once a week and they took turns feeding the dog. They also helped fold and put away laundry. Took turns setting and clearing the dinner table. Their allowance, varied from $5 a month to $10. Their allowance isn't paying them for being part of the family but to teach them responsibility with money. They had certain things they could buy with their own money. There were times they didn't get very much but we tried to give them something. I think it may have started with $1 a month when they were little. They also had to open a savings account and now I think they appreciate it. My oldest was able to buy his own computer and now the youngest wants to. They're going to be buying new instruments and they'll be doing that on their own. After 16, we stopped buying their clothes. Not saying an occasional gift but they receive gift money from family and they can use it for clothes shopping.
Before we moved to Mexico my son mowed the church grass, about 7 acres on a riding lawn mower. He received some pay but was responsible for the gas in the riding mower.
Do they have chores! HA! You tell her I said that! She needs to go jump in the lake! :) You tell missy that she's part of this family and she's going to do her part! It's team work!

He spent two days without any electronics before he finally did three days worth of chores in one day. BUT...it was a victory for me, because I did not let it get to me (or didn't let it show) and he did eventually choose to submit and obey.
