Spoke with Matthew today. His heart is softer, but he's still angry at God and taking it out in the form of denial.
Please pray that he'll run out of excuses and false answers, and be left with truth!
Thanks

He's not there, but I see progress from last year. Please pray that God will bring into his life some strong Christian males. I can't be his only Christian witness. He needs males. Please pray that God will bring into major roles in his life some amazing men after his own heart and have them affect Matthew in just the right way.
Thanks

Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit be tenacious and persistent. Continue to push prod and find an opening so that Matthew can once again acknowledge you and return to a personal walk with you.

Amen

He's showing anger towards God-
claiming that it's that He doesn't exist at all, yet angry about it.
Please pray for clarity of mind for Matthew regarding God, His existence, His love, and His desire for Matthew to come to Him.
Thanks

Many years ago I too was angry at God over something stupid. I wasted so much time.
Thanks be to God for letting me realize that I was the one missing out, but He was still there regardless.

Our Heavenly Father,
We ask that touch Matthew with your love, your arms wrapped about him.
We ask that you touch Matthew's heart and set it on fire for you Father.
We ask that Matthew realize that the only truth is You.
We ask these things in Jesus Name, Amen.

Hi all,
Satan is surely active in the life and mind of Matthew. Please pray that the devil and all of his helpers will be banned from his life enough for him to see through the deception. I received the following email from Matthew. Please read through and pray specifically for him to see through the fallacies in his arguments. Also, if any of you theological smarties have words of wisdom, please share with me that I may pass them along to my friend Matthew.
Thanks indeed my brothers and sisters in Christ!

<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>

So far, the book you gave me is filled with misinformation, selective evidence presentation, scientifically unsound research methods, and constant documentation references to Christian evangelicals rather than real historians (not good for a book that is supposedly using legitimate historical argumentation). This book is designed to prop up the faith of Christians who are having difficulties with doubts. It would not be taken seriously by anyone schooled in legitimate historical research.

To be sure, it uses a very compelling form of persuasion (the "court of law" model of argumentation), but the same faulty arguments and quack-science could be used to support just about any belief system (UFO's, psychics, astrology, etc.). For example, I could drum up historical references to all kinds of religious leaders at the time of Jesus who were claimed by their followers to conduct miracles, but that doesn't mean those "miracles" are historically innocent until proven guilty. For a rational person and a truly historical analysis, absurd claims that are never supported by real life experience are always guilty until proven innocent, especially when they arise from the most miracle-crazed era in human history (the first century). Until Stroebel shows me a single, solid case of an actual miracle (not an ancient document claiming a miracle), I have no reason to consider his arguments. If a saw some bona-fide miracles happen (better than Benny Hinn and Pat Robertson), the burden of proof would begin to shift to me and Stroebel would deserve a response. At the very least, if "miracles" actually happened (not in ancient writings or staged parlor tricks by modern religious groups), I would then have greater burden of proof to demonstrate that miracles did not happen in the case of the Bible stories (fiat creation, resurrection, floating axe handles, flattenning bad guys, etc.). But I've never seen any miracles and no evidence has appeared showing that they have occured. Even with prayer (which is supposed to produce miracles), I've given it a great deal of honest effort (for example, I used to pray daily that god would help the starving aids orphans of Sudan, but he never seemed to acknowledge that request. That seems like the sort of miracle that a really loving god would be all about).

You often claim that I am biased, but bias requires that I deny rational and reasonable arguments because I have ulterior belief motives. But there are no rational or reasonable arguments for Christianity that have not been entirely undermined by rational and reasonable methods of inquiry (biology, history, philosophy, astronomy, etc.). On which side does is bias really at work? Anyway, I have no reason to deny religion. I think it would be great if some form of religion turned out to be true. After all, I'd love to unite with you in your faith, I'd love to live forever and I'd love to have a moral compass to get me through life without existential angst. But as one who values truth--i.e., what is really the case--I just can't honestly swallow a belief system that forces me to suppress the obvious.

Here's a challenge for you and, if you really care about arriving at the real facts of the matter, I would request that you give this some tough soul-searching:

Do you retain a belief in god because there is good reason to do so (e.g., there is reasonable evidence for god's existence, the bible depicts a loving god worthy of worship, your prayers make a difference in the world, etc.), or do you believe in God for some of the same reasons that I did:
(1) I was raised that way and, like all people, I have the tendency to hardwire my socially inscribed beliefs and life patterns, or
(2) because becoming an atheist--like moving to a new country--creates a great deal of social discomfort and even ostracization from social networks that emotionally support you, or
(3) you regularly associate with people that will support you in your belief (church, parents, friends) and this provides relief from the angst caused by doubt and a reinforcement of your beliefs,
(4) there are a large number of books by educated people that argue in favor of your religion, even though there are large numbers of educated authors that argue for all kinds of absurd beliefs),
(5) you have been equipped with emotional structures that make you feel guilty when you seriously consider the possibility that god doesn't exist (even in the face of rational, reasonable, common sense considerations), so you use various tactics to relieve the guilt and expunge the doubt,
(6) you figure god is just too mysterious to be subject to reasonable inquiry (an argument that could be made for ANY false belief system and, on that basis, cannot be used to support Christianity over any other monotheistic faith),
(7) you seek out and study rebuttals to atheist arguments and take comfort in those rebuttals, even though they are inadequate by rational standards,
(8) defending Christianity is a challenging and often rewarding intellectual exercise,
(9) you happened to grow up in a Christian society (rather than in a society of some other religion, most of which you probably haven't seriously checked out).

It's hard to discontinue all the daily habits that keep your faith propped up (prayer, bible reading, communication with other christians). However, I suspect that once you take the bold move to face your doubts head-on and read the bible honestly (all of it, including god's commands to tear open the wombs of pregnant women, David's rejoicing over the crushed heads of babies, the assertion that the earth is flat, god's preferences for men and certain semitic ethnic groups, etc.), you realize that without all the stilts to keep it afloat, your faith is very difficult to keep intact when honestly scrutinized. After all, people are equipped to believe anything when there are enough stilts to prop it up, even if each individual stilt is inconsequential or irrational.

The fear and angst of shedding your faith will eventually wear off, even if it causes rifts in some of your relationships. And when it does, you'll find that life is much less stressful because you don't need to spend so much mental energy reinforcing beliefs that fall down when left to their own defenses.

Sorry this was put so strongly, but you know me. Here's more if you can stomach it:

Lord Almighty, do not turn a deaf ear to the prayers of Your children. We have joined here together in Your name, and rebuked satan and his demons for their presence in Matthews life. We take seriously our petition to You for the softening and changing of Matthews heart. Please hear us oh Lord, and bring Matthew to a point where he is faced with your existance. At that point, lead him to You- to the point that he is humble and aware that he is in dire need of You, and that YOU are the reason he is here at all. Holy Savior, You can do this, I ask that You will be willing to. Please bring peace in the spiritual warfare that is going on regarding Matthew. Make the devil loose this round!!!
In the beautiful name of Your son whom I worship and long to be like,
Amen

God Almighty,
I petition before you tonight and ask that you will bring an amazing man of God into Matthews life this week. And that Matthew will let go of his anger, and spiral of philosophy and self deceving ways. And fall prostrate at Your feet to accept Your wonderful gift of salvation.
In thee name of Your blameless son Jesus,
Amen

Dear Jesus,
From reading today in Luke 18, what I understood is that having “real” faith when we pray means that we are supposed to keep praying a given request, believing that You will answer it, even if we NEVER see the answer.
I’ve given up so many prayers over the years after not seeing the request come to fruition. Please forgive me for this weakness and lack of faith.
God, the heaviest prayer in my life right now is for the salvation of Matthew. Lord Jesus, it’s been 1 ¾ years since my prayers for him began. It seems like such a small time to wait in the eternal scheme of things, but Father, in the mortal scheme this life is but a blip- and then it’s over.
So Father, I pick up this petition to you for Matthew’s salvation with fervor and zeal, and awe for what You are capable of. You kept Pharaoh’s heart hard until the time was right for him to be used by You, and I’m asking You God, make the time for Matthews heart to be softened NOW. Please turn his hearth to belief in You and what Your Son did for him. Please don’t allow his mortal “blip” to pass by before he comes to You with belief and repentance.
In the name of You Son whose great sacrifice has allowed us such free communion with You, I pray,
Amen

Jesus, how long will Your servant need to call upon Your name before my prayers are heard? Please open Matthews heart to You. Bring him strong Christian males that he will gain respect and trust for, and use them to Your glory in Matthews life. Please do not stop seeking him. Please do not let this prayer fall unheard.
I long for a Godly communion with Matthew. I don't want him to burn in hell.
He is angry with me, and said that he does not like that I think he's going to hell. What am I to do? I cannot block the truth or else I would be covering my light under a clay pot. Please Father, send the Spirit to touch him. Send an angel to speak truth to him, send Christian male desciples to love him.
I plead with You Father, do not allow another month to go by with Matthew still denying Your powerful name.
In Jesus' name,
Amen

Oh God, in humble submission stop his denial of You. You've allowed us free will, but You are MORE THAN ABLE to intervene. Please do so in Matthew's life.
In the name of JESUS,
Amen

God, May his silence tonight mean that he is talking to You (which is WAY MORE important than talking to me). He tells me that had You existed, You would have revealed Yourself to him in a way he could detect. I tell him that You have, but he is choosing not to see. He's walking in utter darkness. But God, YOU MADE THE DARK. He's using philosophical spirals to out-think You. But God, YOU MADE HIS BRAIN. He is not lukewarm. He is ICE! But Father, Your word says that it's better to not be lukewarm, so I praise You for that! God, those around me say he'll never turn to You, for me to give up, get out, abandon him, and Lord it does seem hopeless to me. But that is because I have NO power to save Him! And I cannot show You to him by myself. Any hope at all is in You, and You alone. Speak through me when I speak to matthew. More importantly, speak to him through other men, through Your creations, through the work of his own hands. Do NOT have me be his only source to You. God, I plead this with You. Do not let me mourn for him as David mourned for Absalom. Turn him from evil. Turn evil from him. Do NOT allow demons to get to his thoughts, ban any work of satan from any part of Matthew.
Please do not allow Your creation Matthew to remain in darkness. You know what he needs to see/hear to acknowledge You as You, and I pray in Jesus' name that these things will be precisely what are placed before him. Take away all excuses and arguments. Intervene, strengthen his soul and make him hunger insatiably for You. You knew him in his mother's womb. OH, what a miracle it would be if he and his mother (Karen) both gave their lives to You!!!
God, thank You for being You. I PRAISE Your worthy Almighty name for the works that I have faith You will do in Matthews life! Do not let him die as Absalom did, separated from his Father.
Amen

Lord, I don't know who Matthew is, personally, but I do pray to you in the Holy Name of your Son, Jesus Christ to help him. All of us have rebelled against you at one time or another, in actions, in sins, and in words. Still, you see fit, God, to call us back to you. You even sent us your Son to be a perfect shepherd to us and guide us towards your mercy, love, and eventually, your holy kingdom where you reign eternally. Lord, please continue to call Matthew back to you. Help him the hear your gentle words and to bring him back into your fold so that he may see the folly of his rebelion, and so that he might be able to witness your mercy and love. I trust you, Lord. Please, in the name of the your blessed Son, Jesus Christ, who not only guides us towards you, but was the perfect sacarafice for us on the cross so that we may eventually be with you for all time, I pray this. Amen.
