Ok, basicly im just curious about how christians look at metal music..Is it sinful to listen to death metal for example? And I believe no one of you have heard the band Nile(?). Nile is a death metal band which has nothing to do with satanism or anything in that genre. The lyrics is about one of the members interest in egyptiant mysticism and culture. Its quite heavy, but to be honest why should this music be sinful? Just curious :)

Music is just that music. Nothing wrong with styles. Lyrics yes, styles no.

So basically you are deriving satisfaction out of idolatrous reflections on pagan religion.

When you walk around during the day with lyrics about Egyptian mysticism and polytheism running through your mind, do you think that is honoring or acceptable to our Lord?

Style matters a lot less than lyrics.

So you are saying that Karl Sanders and the other members of Nile are being truly "idolatrous" by studying an ancient culture in their lyrics, one which predates most by centuries? How do you know it's "idolatrous"?? If a scholar of Egyptology were to write books about it, would that be "idolatrous"? How is it, then, that a secular metal band becomes such when THEY sing about it? Maybe it's just something that's interesting to them?


I suppose I'm going to have tons of problems when I see Iron Maiden bring back their 'Powerslave' set this summer. [8|]

Oh yeah, I forgot to get back with you on that!! I got my ticket on the first day they went on sale a month ago!! [8D] Kinda frustrating, though, they just HAD to go on sale at 10:AM when I was at work, I had to wait till after work at 4:30 to get a bus to Westlake Mall in downtown Seattle to get one--and wouldn't you know it, I missed the first bus!! [>:]
So I was able to get the next bus and made it there after 5, and I was happy to get my ticket, but I was a little frustrated that I wasn't able to get possibly a better seat. I got a good seat, not in the lawn, fortunately, but you always kinda wonder if you got there sooner, would you have been a little closer to the stage, or would it have mattered? Oh well, I'm just happy that I'm going, because it's gonna BAKE!!!! \m/ \m/ I guess I'm just trying to outdo all the other Maiden fans going to White River in June, seeing that I just live right down the road from the ampitheater!! Just trying to out-Maiden the other fans!! [;)]

Why wouldn't this be acceptable? Its like being interested in insects, stamps, food or a nother countries culture. I wont start believing in ancient egytian religion, thats just stupid. I just find egyptian culture fascinating!

I think there is a vast difference between writing songs about something and writing songs in praise of something. If Nile's songs are encouraging you to sacrifice your first-born child to Ra, then you might want to rethink listening to them.

I see no problem with exploring history in song. I personally would not listen, because the concept sounds kinda cheesey to me. [8|]

See your point, but Nile isnt encouraging you to do anything. They are rather telling ppl in their songs what each gods stood for and how they prayed to their gods an how egytians lived. But of course its genre is Technical Death metal so it wont be any soft lyrics if u see what I mean [;)]

Nile may not necessarily be "encouraging" anyone to sacrifice babies or worship other gods...but I can hardly believe the lyrics are wrtten as to educate and inform others in Egyptian history, I hardly think they are trying to write history books, I mean, IDK but??? Books written about the study of history or stamp collecting or insects are just that, informative and educational. I personally have not heard Nile's music nor have I read their lyrics, but song writting, IMHO, is taking from the personal experiences of the author and whatever effects them on a personal level. Just my thoughts on the matter.

Karl Sanders write all(mostly) Nile's songs because of his interest in egypt, so its personal thing yeah. It may not be THAT educational, but I personally love the egypt theme they chose. Im not a christian, nor a satanist(though i like some bands that are playing blasphemian music) and i think that Nile did great with choosing Egypt as an inspiration source rather than blood, guts and satan worshipping if u see what I mean[;)]

Lots of good Chritian metal out there...even death metal. Maybe you could try some of those bands.

Otherwise Curiousguy1- Since you are just curioius as to how Christians are going to react... Most here love metal, all forms, all styles, all genres. Me personally, I keep it on the Christian metal genre side of things but you will find various takes on various styles of music most from the perspective of a "practicing" Christian. Some here think that secular (non-christian) metal/music is acceptable in some forms where there are no overtly anti-christian or are patently unbiblical lyrical content. It boils down to conviction and allowing for an individual to chose what he/she feels like does or does not separate them from their Godly lives.

Don't listen to death metal myself, but a couple I have run across are Kekal, Antestor, and Paramaecium. I believe Paramaecium is no longer recording, but the other two are going strong. Not being a death metal expert, you may consider these bands in a slightly different category like doom or black metal, but they are close to death (stylistically speaking). I like several different types of metal: Narnia (neo-classical), The Showdown (southern metal), Antithesis (progressive metal), etc. Christians do rock/metal just as competently as secular musicians and, in some instances, I think even better. Sadly, Christian music can't make that claim in many other style genres.

Welcome Curiousguy. I hope and pray that you find Christianity, regardless of popular belief, is loving and non-judgmental. There are those few but for all intents and purposes most posters here try to keep it all in love and understanding...

I'm not a fan of death metal either, but every now and then I'll play a song on my show from that genre. Some other Christian bands you may check out with some death influence would be Mortification, Hilastherion and Tortured Conscience. Thrash is closer to my thing so Ultimatum, Temple of Blood, Grave Forsaken, Faith Factor and Arnion are some of the current Christian thrash bands.

As for your original question, I was convicted by the Spirit to listen to only Christian music. I used to be a big fan of Sabbath, Maiden, King Diamond, Metallica, etc. Sold off everything I had. For me it was a simple decision being an engineer: garbage in = garbage out. I don't watch TV or read non-Christian books and infrequently see "popular" movies. If it does nothing for my walk with God I avoid it as best as possible. A general definition of sin is anything that separates you from God, so, yes, I see listening, reading or watching things that don't bring me closer as sinful.

Mortification

Why not? It is no different then writing music about politics or love or anything else for that matter.

Sun_Tzu, I am quoting myself above...whereas I stated IDK (I don't know) However, writing songs regarding your beliefs on politics or love is exactly what I am speaking about. Those songs are written because the author feels strongly about those things. Being political, it is usually a strong opposition or rebelious situation "speaking out" against certain political figures and not written as a history test. And as far as love is concerned, again, because the author feels strongly about the love they feel, not becuase he/she is trying to write a scientific study as to why the feeling of love is comparible to eating lots and lots of chocolate.

Uh... they don't glorify God and only serve to tickle the ears shall we say. I still hum Sabbath and Metallica tunes to this day, but I don't listen to them anymore. The Bible is quite clear on this.
