Howdy everyone,

Yesterday I tried my first homemade beauty treatment. I had some leftover avocado and so I mashed it with some plain full fat yogurt and put it on my face until it dried (did it durning children's nap time so I wouldn't get asked why mommy's face was green!). After I took it off, my face felt and looked very smooth. It is definately worth doing and works better than commercial facial products that I've tried (not to mention cheap).

How about you, what are your favorite homemade beauty treatments?

I love to make body/facial scrubs from sugar and oil! I use olive oil, apricot oil, whatever oil I have on hand. It my skin feel like silk! And it exfoliates my lips nicely, too.

I also love using my mom's homemade pure shea-butter/coconut oil and essential oil body butter. I have one that has peppermint extract in it that I love to put on after being in the tanning bed. Feels nice and cool!

Apple cider vinegar is a great face toner. I use it on a cotton ball.

I love this recipe:

1.5 tsp cornmeal
.5 tsp water
1 tsp honey

mix, let set for a few minutes and apply to face. Let set on face for a few minutes, then wash off. Face will be clean, soft but not tight. I love this stuff and there is no other junk in it.

Rachel, those sound fantastic. Could you post some recipes?

isaacsmom -> RE: homemade beauty (4/12/2008 9:57:57 AM)

I'll ask my mom to post her body butter recipe, I don't have it, I just take what she makes, lol. [:D]

Sugar scrub --

2 tbsp. oil (olive oil, grapeseed oil, apricot oil, any will work)
1 tbsp sugar
splash of lemon juice

This makes a small amount, usually enough for me to use once or twice. Sometimes I make the recipe on a larger scale, I just "eyeball" it until it's the consistency I want. I love it!

I am thoroughly convinced that avacado is the best for your skin! I have hair conditioner with avacado in it and when I bathed regularly (as opposed to taking showers - I do still clean regularly) my skin was so incredibly soft. I couldn't believe how soft! Then I went back to taking showers and it wasn't nearly as soft. So now after I put my conditioner on I rub what's left on my hands on my elbows and ankles and I don't have rough skin there anymore.

At my MOPS group recently our craft was oatmeal hand scrub and coffee ground body scrub. I haven't used either my self yet but I've heard people liked them.

Oh, that one is nice, too! My mom makes that . . . . I don't have the recipe, though

Julie, do you know the name of the conditioner with the avocado?

I haven't made much of my own stuff but I do like the body scrubs with just sugar and oil. Yummy.

HisCovenant -> RE: homemade beauty (4/13/2008 5:19:39 PM)

I love my essential oils, base oils, and base butters. Aromatherapy is a great way to maintain health and beauty. I've made salt scrubs, too, but haven't in a while. One thing I haven't gotten into is using fruits and veggies as masks. There are books you can buy that explain how to make these recipes and what to use for specific problems/needs.

I started making my own products because Bath & Body Works kept discontinuing my favorites. I was shocked to find how dangerous it was to use their products and that natural products should be preferred. I totally changed my mindset after all the research and now either use natural or go without.

uponeagleswings -> RE: homemade beauty (4/13/2008 7:34:43 PM)

I"m interested in learning more about aromatherapy and what it can be good for. Can you recommend any good (and reliable) books/websites?

HisCovenant -> RE: homemade beauty (4/13/2008 9:17:44 PM)

Guide I use

Place on web I buy supplies from- be careful if non-toxic cosmetics is a goal because they sell fragrance oils and other supplies that aren't "pure."

I don't really use the web for aromatherapy education.

It's Redken's All Soft. It's a bit spendy but I honestly tried just about every brand you could get that was inexpensive and my hair was so frizzy and then the hairdresser who did my hair for my wedding used this and it was amazing! I love the smell and my hair is great and then there's the added bonus of making my skin soft too. Well worth the extra money.

Hmm...my dad has had a copy of that book on his bookshelf forever. I think I read through it out of curiosity in middle school

HisCovenant -> RE: homemade beauty (4/14/2008 8:47:31 PM)

I like it becaue it is basic enough for beginners, but you don't really outgrow it. There's lots of good stuff to reference even after you learn a lot about it and have practiced it. Someone is always asking me something I don't practice, like "is blah blah oil safe for children?" I don't have kiddos, so I have to check.

3cappuccinosmom -> RE: homemade beauty (4/15/2008 8:52:01 AM)

I'm not much into beauty stuff, but I've been experimenting with coconut oil and I like it.

It's a great moisturizer, and helps smooth out my arms which are usually dry and bumpy.

It prevented scarring on my face when I had poison ivy last summer. The other patches I had, I wasn't consistent putting the oil on and they did scar. [>:]

I tried it in my hair yesterday and it left it very soft and manageable. I brushed it into my hair about 10 minutes before I showered, and then shampooed as usual.

HEREs a link with more ideas.

uponeagleswings -> RE: homemade beauty (4/15/2008 12:17:19 PM)

I need to break down and just get a jar of coconut oil. I'm concerned about potential allergies though. I seem to be able to eat coconut (at least the shredded stuff [:'(]) just fine, but the worst skin breakout-type allergic reaction I've ever had was from a shampoo where I think the main ingredient was coconut oil. The last time I was at the store I asked if they had an open container that I could sample from, but no luck.

HisCovenant -> RE: homemade beauty (4/15/2008 12:53:16 PM)

If you can eat coconut then you may consider getting the smallest jar of Virgin Coconut Oil you can... try it on your skin w/o contaminating it (ie, don't use your fingers to dip into it!) If you have any reaction, use it for cooking.

It's very important that if you eat coconut oil that you stay away from processed oil and get Virgin CO... It can also be labeled as "Extra Virgin" but is the same as "Virgin." It is very unhealthy to eat other types of coconut oil. Better explaination is here.

When I tried it for cooking, I tried to make a savory dish with it and it ruined the dish. I would advise using it to saute or roast sweeter things like sweet potatoes, carrots, plantanos (I can't reacall the English word for this fruit, sorry!! I hope you can figure out what I mean,) etc. or in baking sweet things like muffins, cakes, etc.

uponeagleswings -> RE: homemade beauty (4/19/2008 9:39:52 AM)

Will coconut oil help with dry skin/eczema? If not, does anyone know of something that will? Hubby has some sort of itchy breakout all over his back. It is red and dry- I'm not thinking allergy because we haven't changed anything lately and we've stripped and washed all of the sheets. It itches him so bad he has hardly been sleeping [:(]. We've tried cortizone cream, calamine lotion, aloe, and anything else I can think of. So far the only thing that helps even a little bit is the Burt's Bees massage oil (almond oil, lemon oil, vit E oil), and scalding hot showers (which I try to discourage figuring that they only dry his skin out more). I'll repost in H&F if no one has any ideas, but I thought I'd try here first.

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: homemade beauty (4/19/2008 11:20:57 AM)

Stacy, I use coconut oil on my Eczema and it's worked better then anything else I've tried. I'm not a walking scabby mess anymore[8|]

Brandy -> RE: homemade beauty (4/19/2008 12:21:19 PM)

another vote for coconut oil.

My office manager had a few patches, got a jar at my request and uses it regularly now and keeps it under control. He's really shocked that all the other creams he tried didn't work and yet this simple one ingredient product did the trick.

uponeagleswings -> RE: homemade beauty (4/19/2008 12:51:56 PM)

2 votes so far [:D] That's good enough for me to be willing to give it a try, especially since the Burt's Bees oil was helping somewhat, which makes me think dry skin. I also have lots of kids that I see who have had really bad eczema lately- it tends to get bad when it gets hot, dry, and dusty, which is this time of year.

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: homemade beauty (4/19/2008 5:56:02 PM)

The other thing that helps mine is going tanning[8|]

Oh, coconut oil is anti-microbial?Antibacterial? It's one of those and my GP said that is part of why it helps, especially if I stop picking.

Brandy -> RE: homemade beauty (4/19/2008 6:55:46 PM)

Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which is known for being anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal.

uponeagleswings -> RE: homemade beauty (4/21/2008 6:51:52 PM)

Hmm the coconut oil isn't helping enough (and in a day and a half we went through 1/3 of the jar). He says the oil makes it stop for a little while, but not long enough. He's still itching so bad he has trouble sleeping. I'm at a loss here- does anyone have any other ideas? It looks red and a bit splotchy but isn't flaking. If its an allergic reaction I'm stumped b/c we haven't changed anything lately.

Nicole_Michelle -> RE: homemade beauty (4/21/2008 7:23:51 PM)

Has he tried taking benadryl? Is he eating something new?

It could be a heat rash. My dad get those on his chest by his neck. It looks horrible! Tell your hubby to try his darndest not to scratch that area because that could be making it worse.
