BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A U.S. Marine in Iraq has been removed from duty amid complaints that he was handing out coins with Bible verses at an American checkpoint, the military said Thursday. A military spokesman said Iraqis in Falluja complained that the Marine was giving the coins, which were printed in Arabic, to people at an entry control point in Falluja. U.S. military regulations prohibit religious proselytizing. "This has our full attention," said Col. James L. Welsh, chief of staff of Multi-National Force, West. "We deeply value our relationship with the local citizens and share their concerns over this serious incident." http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/05/29/iraq.bible/index.html Of course, if he was a Blackwater goon opening fire on innocent civilians for no reason that would be ok. First...we do not know, and probably will never know the CIRCUMSTANCES through which the "Blackwater" thing happened....so, in light of that....it's mere speculation (and wishful thinking by those in the U.S. media, and SOME politicians) that some so-called "goon" just simply "opened fire" on "innocent" civilians...... Such actions by American service members threaten to alienate Sunni Arabs who have become key allies in the fight against insurgents, a movement that started in Anbar province, which includes Fallujah. Distribution of the coins in Fallujah was particularly sensitive because the city, 40 miles west of Baghdad, is known for its large number of mosques. It was the center of the Sunni-led insurgency before a massive U.S. offensive in November 2004. http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-05-30-marine-coin_N.htm?csp=34 Wonder what would happen if that were Muslim soldiers here in dallas....passing out Muslim coins to folks as they were walking down the street....in front of First Baptist Church of Dallas....I believe that would cause quite an uproar, as well....
