It would probably be the other church that would need the insurance, since we'd be doing it in their parking lot. We don't have a paved lot and we're three miles out from town, so it would be better to do it in town. I'm wondering how the logistics of a shared ministry will work out, since we're two different denominations, but it's the Lord's Kingdom we're building, not ours.

I would get the insurance squared away before actually building anything. I wouldn't count on it "probably" being the other church's responsibility to carry the liability, since you're both involved with setting this up. If some kid cracks his head open and his folks want to sue, they WILL come after you.

We've ordered a book on plans to build ramps and things.

I also wouldn't build any sort of high-stress, heavy-use equipment for public use w/o knowing what I was doing and w/o having some sort of licensed engineer sign off on it. If any of your equipment fails and somebody gets hurt, you will be liable.

I'm not trying to be a naysayer, but there's is a lot of potential for real injury here if something goes wrong. Just make sure you do it right.

I think it's going to be at the park, not at a church, so I'm not sure if insurance will be necessary.

Is the park owned by the town? Has whoever owned the park agreed to this and are they aware of any liability issues? Have you looked into having parents sign waivers of liability?

I can't see how you can own any sort of equipment, invite the public to come use it, and NOT carry liability insurance. This is especially true if you're also building the equipment.

This is what happens when structures are subjected to loads that they're not designed to handle:

Please, do yourself and everyone else a favor and find somebody who's got some experience not only in organizing events, but also with constructing things for public use. Ignorance is not a valid excuse when something goes wrong.

We'll make sure to check into what we need to do and what we'll need for insurance and things. My husband has a wonderful board that is very good at helping him with things like that. He's also working on the insurance factor. I don't attend the meeting myself, not being on the board, so it's hard for me to know exactly what's been talked about, but I do talk to my husband about these things and trust that they are going to do this thing right.

Posting semi-cold...

A decent skatepark will not be able to be "packed away." The best ones are concrete or masonite--NOT METAL!!! It's cheap and a lot of places have it, but it sucks.

Check out the Tony Hawk Foundation for grants. I don't know about insurance. Our city has signs posted at our parks that say something to the effect that you skate at your own risk and state law relieves the city of any liability.

There's a church in a small town nearby that has a skate park. It's behind a chain link fence and barbed wire and is only open certain times. I can't find a website for them. You can check out One-9 Skate Park. This is the home of Sk8 Church and it is awesome! It's a project of a bunch of different churches, but they got grants to put it together as well. You have to pay $5 to skate and wear a helmet. They have an 11-foot quarter pipe that is my nemesis.

And yes, I suggest you start becoming familiar with skate culture and at least be willing to try a few things.

It's in an old grain building.

Nope, just the pastor's wife, doing some research on behalf of my husband. :) I don't like being in charge. I just like giving other people ideas and inspiration and looking up stuff for them.

Stellaluna, we did check out the Tony Hawk foundation. It's one of the things they are considering.
