The Travel Channel has a show I watched yesterday where a family of 5 in S. Calif. picked one of 3 travel agents planned suggestions for an 'economical' vacation on a $10,000 budget. I don't know about you but that was expensive. What's a favorite vacation that you've enjoyed. Whether it be an expensive trip or a trip on a shoestring?

I always have tons of fun when we go to the mountains. Last year Lorne and I went for 3 nights. My parents ended up going at the same time (unplanned) so we ended up going for dinner with them and going for a nice walk. We never spend a lot on vacations and don't feel the need to.

My favorite "vacations" were the youth trips to Mexico we used to take with our old church. I went a few times as a teenager, then as a jr. leader in college and my husband and I led the trip a few times after we were married. We drove from Dallas to central Mexico and stayed 2 weeks, sleeping on the floor of the church we were working with. We could do the whole trip for about $600/person.

$10K is a lot for a vacation budget. I am cringing over the $1K-$2K budget it costs to go to Disney World for a 4-6 days and stay on property and eat at their restaurants. My favorite vacation thus far in life was our honeymoon to Hawaii. I didn't believe that Hawaii was as great as everyone said it was until I got there to see for myself.

My favorite vacation? Probably my first trip to Europe. It was with a group of friends and it was fantastic. It was such a new and exciting experience for me. It was a ten-day trip that included skiing in Austria, then sightseeing in Florence & Rome. It was pretty economical because we went in February, which is still in the off season. I've been several times now, and I generally go in Feb/Mar or October because prices are cheapest then. Second to that was probably the Alaskan cruise. We got a good price on that because we took the last cruise of the season (in Sept.), when the weather was beginning to get cold and rainy. All of the stuff in the souvenir shops was 50% off because this was their last opportunity to sell it before closing for the winter. [:D] The most romantic vacation I've ever taken was our honeymoon in Lake Tahoe. Again, we saved money because we went right before the summer season started. We had free airfare since I work for an airline, and found a great deal on a rent car. It was very relaxing and scenic and wonderful.

Oh, and a shout out to the Canadians... we are going to Jasper, Banff, and Lake Louise at the end of May. [:D]

Ooooh Banff is only an hour and a half away from me! And when we are in our new place it will be about 45 minutes away! You will love it there! We are planning on going to Banff sometime in May too! We have a g/c we want to use for a couple nights at a hotel. Do you know where you will be staying?

I don't know where we are staying yet. Our friend from Edmonton is going with us to give us the mountain "tour" and she is making all of the arrangements.

I have several favorite vacations. The top 3 would probably be: 1. Hawaii (DH and I - no kids) 2. Oregon Coast (several times w/kids) 3. Germany (working but still got a couple of days off per week to sightsee) Hawaii was one of the most relaxing vacations I had ever been on. No rushing, no stress. Going at our own pace for 5 straight days. My dad's cousin and his wife had these Japanese friends who cooked us a fabulous dinner (homemade barbeque pizza with about 100 different topings with some Japanese/Hawaiian appetizers). We didn't have the money to do what I had hoped (a kayak tour) but we made up for it in other ways, like visiting the Arizona memorial, accidentally ending up on one of the sets of LOST while trying to find a hiking trail, and visiting some historical sites. It was really hard coming home although we missed the kids!

My favorite vacation was last year when we rented a very simple cabin, cooked out over the fire, hiked up waterfalls, and just spent time being together. Cost less than $300 for 6 people, including rental, gas, and all supplies.

1. Alaskan Cruise with hubby to celebrate 3rd anniversary. We went the fist week in June, so the prices were pretty decent. 2. Trip to visit SIL in Germany. Bro was in Iraq at the time, but we still enjoyed visiting her. She took some time off and we traveled up to Paris for a long weekend. We used frequent flyer miles for the airplane ticket, and staying with SIL for most nights cut down cost.

Its a tie between a cruise we took for our 2nd wedding anniversary and a trip we took with my family last October. The cruise was 5 days and we stopped in Cozumel and Grand Cayman, it was a lot of fun. In October we all rented a huge cabin and stayed near Maggie Valley, N.C. It was so nice to be with family and enjoy the fall weather.

My favourite vacation was our wedding in Cuba. The beautiful wedding aside, it was Dh's first vacation ever and it was incredible being able to experience that with him. It felt like we spent the entire week in the water, and going scuba diving together was so much fun. Watching the permanent smile on Dh's face for the entire week was also a great experience! I haven't really been on many other vacations. I went to Italy in high school for a class trip. That was my first vacation and plane ride ever. I also went to the Dominican Republic which was incredible because my roommate had a friend there, so even though we stayed on a resort, we were able to hang out at there house and experience Dominican life first hand (we went to a domino's club and I beat everyone! They were all very impressed)

Camping trips are always a blast, I've been on several of those I've loved. Especially one that hubby and I took in the Wichita Mts. in Lawton, OK . . . . we love camping there. It was just the two of us and we spent a long weekend. The weather was perfect and we ate at Meer's, hiked, swam and got ice cream at the tiny ice cream shop in Medicine Park, it was just awesome. I also spend a week in NYC in June of 2003, with my MIL and a couple of hubby's aunts. It was a BLAST. I really want to go back with dh. We took our first family vacation last summer, we went to our denominational convention in Little Rock, AR. Just the 4 of us, we had a really great time.

Lawton, I've been there! My favorite vacation in the states is driving up to Trinity Lake and camping out at Squirrel Flat. I like roughing it. No running water and bathing in the lake. Watching the eagle feed it's babies. Looking up at the snow capped Trinity Alps and riding mountain bikes on the fire roads. [sm=popsigh.gif] Makes me homesick.

My favorite vacation was going to Disney World in March.I loved it soo much.They have the coolest rides and the weather was awesome as well. I gotta go there again.[:D]

Hard to pick a favorite! When I was growing up, we went on at least one vacation a year. Now with my husband, we, too, take at least one week-long vacation a year. My favorite growing up was camping in Yosemite with my dad and his wife's extended family - there were probably 100 of us! It felt like we took over the whole valley! Funny, as I think of favorites being married, I recall the ones I joke that I hated! We went to Yellowstone - the first vacation without my adult son - dh and I fought the WHOLE time, but I remember lot's of great times too! It was so beautiful there! The Grand Tetons were breathtaking! Another one that wasn't my favorite, but I thought of instantly when reading this thread, was a trip we took to Hawaii - just dh and I. We stayed with friends of his from Teen Challenge and that was awkward for me. The weather was horrible - rain, rain, and more rain - it almost never stopped! The best part of it was ministering to these friends. Dh and I really spoke into their lives - together! That part was awesome! Ok, now for my real favorites! We go almost every year to a little lake called Shaver outside of Fresno, Ca. We take the kids, extra family (my dad, my niece, etc - whoever can come) and tons of ds's friends. Dh's cousins live near by, so we plan to camp together for the same week. They have a honda watercraft and we used to have a seadoo (now we just rent them), so we have an unbelievable amount of fun! We can't go this year, and I'm so, so bummed! Teen Challenge is celebrating their 50th Anniversary in New York, so we are going there instead this year. A side note about ds's friend. We have prayed for this young man for many years. Two years ago he became a Christian and let me tell you - the worship around the campfire has been phenomenal! It really helps, too, that my son's fiance is a very talented singer! My other favorite was my honeymoon to Jamaica. Heaven.....

Let's see.... Before kids, it would have to be our honeymoon trip, camping out on the White River. Our tent was right across the road from the bathroom/shower area, so we weren't "roughing it" at all. It was just so nice and relaxing and fun. After kids, definitely our trip to stay on the beach with friends at the Gulf of Mexico (south of Lafayette, LA). We had absolutely nothing to do but sit around and talk and play on the beach (and walk to the nearest shop to get takeout cocktails [:D]). It was heaven!!! Katrina destroyed that beach and it makes me so sad that we'll never get to go back there again.

I havent went on many vacations, or any where to far off.... although I would like to I love camping and going to the beach. I would love to take a cruise someday, I would love to go anywhere with beautiful scenery, I would love to go to Japan.

One I will always remember was to Breckenridge, Colorado during the off season. We car caravaned with my parents and stayed at a business resort. We went down slopes in a sled, took the cog wheel train up Pike's Peak and my husband saw real snow for the first time in his life. we went to The North Pole and saw santa and the elves and rode on their little train. Another vacation many years ago was driving to Disneyland and Epcot in Florida on a shoestring. Couldn't afford to go there now most likely. But everything there was thrilling. Now we go to Galveston, Texas to Moody Gardens which has a lot of attractions...Rainforest pyramid with fish from the amazon and a bat cave, a nice shallow pool, a paddleboat, and now an aquarium. The flowers there are georgeous, they must send gardeners out early because you never see a dead plant or flower. Galveston has lots of tourist attractions and teriffic food. We stayed at the Flagship which is built out over the water and the only one in the world that is they say.

Bethany, I used to live in Banff, it's such a nice place to visit!! My favorite vacations were my trip to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico, and our honeymoon in Newfoundland - that was awesome. I had seen all the provinces in Canada except that one, and wow, it sure is a treasure.

When I was in high school we took a family road trip. We stuffed the 5 of us (3 kids, 2 adults) in a minivan and drove from Michigan up to Mt Rushmore, saw Yosemite, went through Salt Lake City, did a bunch of canyons (Grand Canyon, Bryce, etc), went through a bit of Texas, and then home by way of St Louis. We were gone for a bit over 2 weeks, and no, we didn't kill each other. I have such awesome memories from that trip- we still talk about it and it was about 10 years ago. Someday I'd like to do a mega road trip with hubby and (eventual) kids.
