Hi Guys

My boyfriend has a gay friend, a friend that practices witchcraft, and has a best friend that is an unbeliver...I have always heard "birds a like flock toghether"....so what do you guys think? Do your best friends reflect you/reflect your character?

I wouldn't call them friends. Friends have common interest, beliefs, and ideals. Frankly, I'd run from those relationships in the best interest of my self preservation.

What is his attitude about these people's lifestyles? Is he trying to witness to them? It's perfectly fine to develop friendships with unbelievers as long as they don't influence us and make us compromise our faith.

It's long been said that you become like the people you associate with. Why do you think our parents always told us "I don't want you hanging around with that person"?

Lets assume for the moment that your boyfriend is trying to reach these people. There is one of him and 3 of them. Which is more likely to change? He is getting 3 doses of bad for every dose of good he puts out. It's doesn't look good for him.

Having friends like thos is OK. But having best friends like those is a huge red flag.

I think it's a flag but without more details will not comment further. Friendship can happen with anyone and I don't think it's a problem. The problem is when compromises are made.

The Bible teaches us that light has no fellowship with darkness. Someone is compromising something and I would be willing to be it isn't the unbelievers. If I were you I would make better choices when it comes to bf and friends.

Yes, who we call our friend reflects on who we are.

personally i have in the past maintained various levels of friendships with non-believers. they weren't my best friends but we shared interests/ hobbies. they were a small part of my life and did not bring me down and i hope i was able to plant seeds that would later come to fruition. i think it's important to have friends who are grounded in Christ to put into practice various biblical truths:

Proverbs 13:20 = He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
Proverbs 27:17 = Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
Eccl 4:9-12 = share successes, help another when fallen, defend together

hmmm i think this makes me want to do a devotion on friends for Sunday School :)
i'm not sure of the exact details so i'm not bashing your boyfriend, but there are benefits to having Christians be among your bestest friends.

godsgirl, I am very much an extrovert, and have the need for a tremendous number of people in my life at different levels. I'm a 50yo male, and I need same and opposite friends of similar age, young and old adults, children, retarded people, etc. Even with this I have nonbelieving friends, but they have a very defined place in my life. Your bf having a best friend as an unbeliever should be a red flag, unless his main purpose in the relationship is to witness to him. If he significantly leans on this guy for close companionship, a confidant, etc., not good. Nonchristians are our spiritual enemies, even if we share interests. I have Christian friends with whom we share little or no interests, because Christ is the center of the relationship.

I had a good friend in high school that was an unbeliever. He was an atheist. We discussed sports shot hoops and argued about the Viet Nam war.

I had another friend in high school that we played sports together.

My purpose with both of these people was not to share Christ or be a Christian witness but just to have fun. The second one got saved.

If you had judged me by my friends you would have been way off.

At work presently I have 2 people that I enjoy talking to. One is an assistant pastor the other seems to be a flaming liberal.

I enjoy talking to the assistant pastor about what he is going to preach on next. I add some of my thoughts for his sermon. The liberal we argue about current events.

My friends have to engage me. I am bored with people that don't throw ideas out there to discuss.

I am not a pastor or a liberal.

Have you not heard of the great commission given to us by Jesus Christ Himself? Our purpose on this earth is to witness to souls.

To the OP...there is a huge difference between close friends and casual acquaintance's. Guys I talk with about sports, current events, etc, are not close friends, most people I work with are not close friends, they are business associates...a close friend and a best friend esp. is someone I communicate with on a deeper level and that most certainly could not be someone who does not share the passion and love I have for Christ, the number one person in my life.

Are you sure your bf doesn't see these people as casual acquaintances and not close friends?

I would never have "friends" like that. I try to surround myself with people who share my beliefs and morals, especially my best friend. I just find it too hard to try and be around people who don't see things the way I do, without compromising my own beliefs.
