I am a Pastor that believes that thithing under the Old Testament does not apply to the New Testament Christian. This does not mean we should not give, however, the giving should be spirit lead and not under the punishmemt of a curse as discribed in Malachi 3:9. You comments and insights are welcome.

I am sure there is a one stop thread for tithing..but how do you take Matthew 23:23?

Jesus was speaking to and scolding the pharisees who were under the law to tithe.

Thanks

Matthew 23:23

quote:

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.

Seems to me Jesus was advocating the tithe.

In the N.T. there is nothing that supports the 1/10th tithe. However the Lord does state about the elder woman who gave all she had and it was worth more than what the "Others" who proudly displayed their usually 1/10th givings.
Also Paul says we are to give with a cheerful heart. If you give with a worrisome or other than cheerful it counts for nothing. We are justified through Christ and not the law, for if the law could justify then Christ died for nothing.

On a personal note and personal experience: I have never read the O.T. (until about 10 yrs ago) However when I gave it must have been written in my heart because I've always gave 10 percent.

However if my budget falls short, I will then give as much as I can.

Thank you all for you input on my question. The law of tithing according to the Mosaic law were to be brought to the Temple. However, the temple was destroyed in AD 70. Additionally, thithes were to be given to the Levites for the service to God in the Temple.
