PastorSharon -> Will you go to hell if you smoke cigarettes? (4/20/2008 10:50:35 PM)

I received the calling of God and I am having a terrible time trying to stop smoking cigarettes. I have stopped many times. I have a husband who smokes like a freight train and refuses to go outside to smoke. I will continue to work on this problem with the Lord's help. I am interested in other's oppinion.

Go to hell for smoking? No, you won't go to hell, though you may smell like you make occasional visits.

crankius -> RE: Will you go to hell if you smoke cigarettes? (4/20/2008 10:53:33 PM)

This should be in the morality folder, probably.

My answer is no, smoking will not interfere in the atoning work of Christ. [:D]

It's just bad for you though, so you shouldn't do it.

Have you tried to get help to quit? I'm sorry you are having troubles quitting. It would be so much better if your husband desired to quit too.

Agreed with the replies. No eternal condemnation for smoking.

Pretty much. This is why I became a banker and not a counselor. As a counselor, I listen to people's issues and the best I can offer is "Dang. That's a problem."

To the OP: sorry for that little bit of sarcasm. The folks here have it right - God loves you no matter how you smell. Speaking just for me, that's a real good thing.

Thank you very much for your opinions. Yes I have used sprays, gums, patches...I have quit, however it is extremely hard to stay quit when my husband enjoys cigarettes so much that he refuses to even go outside to smoke. I am afraid that even if I do quit my clothing... will still smell like smoke since he not only smokes in the house but our car as well. I ask that not only do you pray for my success in smoking but for my husband to stop smoking as well. Also pray for my continuing success in doing the will of God.

I don't think so. However, since our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, we should show due respect to it.

Just for the sake of argument, let's assume that neither of us will ever have tobacco related health issues and will live to be 105 with all our faculties.

Would you rather live the rest of your life and ministry without being addicted, a virtual slave, to nicotine?

I got rid of the last bit of tobacco 698 days ago and the last of any nicotine 601 days ago. I can spend time with a friend, a relative, someone needing a friendly ear without any concern that I will need to get a nicotine fix. They have my full attention. A couple of years ago, that attention would begin to wane after 30-45 minutes and begin to disappear within an hour. I can thoroughly enjoy being at church for several hours without wanting a hit of my old drug of choice. I can plan and enjoy a trip or an event without taking nicotine into the equation at all.

Jesus paid to set me free. How can I effectively share that message while being enslaved by a drug that has no medical benefit whatsoever?

This freedom is worth that relatively brief period of extreme discomfort I had to endure for a few days. I will remember the cost of that freedom and I will also remember and continue to share that Jesus was with me each minute, hour, and day of the journey back to freedom.

buckifn -> RE: Will you go to hell if you smoke cigarettes? (4/22/2008 12:21:21 PM)

No, but you will prob. breath a lot easier while you are here if you can quit.

jbow -> RE: Will you go to hell if you smoke cigarettes? (4/22/2008 2:26:22 PM)

I could be wrong but it is my understanding of the gospel that it is "sin" that sends you to hell and not "sins".

What I mean to say is that it is being unregenerate that sends one to hell. Once we are born again we are His, we may sin in this or that way and we may suffer from it, but we are still saved from damnation. So, it is "sin" that damns us, not "sins". Sin was dealt with by Christ on the cross and it is applied to us in justification by faith. Sins were also dealt with Christ on the cross but are dealt with in us by sanctification by faith.

I find that there are degrees to sanctification and that one can walk in and out of it. Sometimes we get in the flesh and have to repent, sometimes we walk in the Spirit and in more sanctification. Some people seem to have a more steadfastness in sanctification and some seem to stumble through life. I believe Christ is sufficient to save both.

Once you are justified, you are saved from sin. To the degree you are sanctified you are saved from sins. At leaast that is the way I understand it.

Hold to your faith and ask the Lord for help but don't accept condemnation, it comes from the devil.

Smoking isn't something to brag about, but I can't find any Biblical evidence that it'll send someone to hell.

WELL SAID! [sm=thumbsup.gif] I am glad I looked for a post that said this before I did so too...

That's got to make it a whole lot tougher. My wife would give me a good solid dope-slap if I pulled that with her. My wife struggles with her weight. The last thing I would do is go grab half a coconut cream pie and snarf it down if she were trying to control her eating. That seems to me to be an issue worth discussing with your spouse. God put us together to HELP each other, after all.

Best wishes to you. And kudo's for the effort to remain healthy.

amen. Your husband should be supportive of your decision to live a healthier life. Not only does it save money in cigarette cost, but also potential health-related issues down the road as well.

My wife and I have struggled with this same problem for quite some time as well. It's definitely one of those things that take a full blown committment to do. Best of luck, my prayers are with you.

Pastor Sharon

You are not ready to be a pastor if you have to ask on a christian forum if people will go to hell who smoke cigarettes. If you were ready to be a pastor this would be a no brain-er for you.

If GOD wants you to quit, you won't smoke any more, but maybe GOD has some use for you as a smoker.

Just like any other thing entering your mouth, it may kill your body of flesh before its time but it cannot touch your soul.

I disagree. If God has called her to be a pastor then she is ready. God does not call the qualified He qualities the called. Pastors are human just like the rest of us. And just like the rest of us they suffer from the same temptations and struggles we do.

Qtman -> RE: Will you go to hell if you smoke cigarettes? (4/23/2008 9:38:04 AM)

In response to the OP I do not believe smoking will cause damnation. Since I smoke I certainly hope and pray it don't. I am sorry you are having such a hard time and I know your husband's smoking and his refusal to smoke outside is not helping. My wife cannot stand smoke and therefore I have not smoked in my house in over 25 years. I also do not smoke in our vehicles. I hope and pray your husband will re-evaluate his position so he can be a support to you in your efforts. God Bless and keep you.

That is indeed true. And like members in the congregation, He may cause them to endure the same process of recovering from an addiction. I know it helped and encouraged me to talk with people who escaped slavery to nicotine as I reached different critical points.

A calling is not an excuse to be hasty, though. Study, and learn God's word first.

Not so sure I would want a pastor who was unsure of if smoking would equate eternal damnation. I would expect one to have a firmer grasp on Salvation than that.

A pastor is a shepherd, and is accountable for the flock. What's going to happen when one of the sheep has a real issue?

JordanW -> RE: Will you go to hell if you smoke cigarettes? (4/24/2008 12:02:58 AM)

Yes quitting is a tough thing to do definitely. I have been smoking almost a year and I wish I would have never started, good luck to you. I'm glad it doesn't condemn you to Hell either. :)
