I just read that Joe Feeney, who crooned “Danny Boy” and other standards for 25 years on “The Lawrence Welk Show,” died on April 16 in Carlsbad, Calif. He was 76 and lived in San Marcos, Calif.

The cause was emphysema, his son Tim Feeney said, adding that his family believed he might have contracted the illness from decades of performing in smoky casinos and nightclubs.

Not so sure I would want a pastor who was unsure of if smoking would equate eternal damnation. I would expect one to have a firmer grasp on Salvation than that.

A pastor is a shepherd, and is accountable for the flock. What's going to happen when one of the sheep has a real issue?

Correct Ben!!!! You understood what I was saying. God gives us in "His Word' the qualifications for a pastor. If one cannot meet those qualifications then I would have to question "their calling".

Titus 1:6-16
6 An elder must be well thought of for his good life. He must be faithful to his wife, and his children must be believers who are not wild or rebellious. 7 An elder must live a blameless life because he is God's minister. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or greedy for money. 8 He must enjoy having guests in his home and must love all that is good. He must live wisely and be fair. He must live a devout and disciplined life. 9 He must have a strong and steadfast belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with right teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong.

My wife smokes... a lot. It took me three years to quit smoking. It was not easy but it can be done...even with smokers in the house.

When you "enjoy" a cigarette, you are feeding your addiction, not liking to smoke. I started smoking again a few months ago. To give up smoking I had to quit drinking and while on vacation I drank some so...had to smoke with it. Got addicted again...but I had to FORCE myself to smoke.

It tastes terrible. Its hard on your lungs and throat. It makes food taste terrible. It takes energy from you.

Once again I could not have quit but God interceded. He allowed me to get sick for 5 weeks, pneumonnia. That....cured me. No more. I don't ever want to feel like that again.

Quit now....or God will make you quit.

I am praying for you, I can imagine how hard it is trying to quit smoking..But I must say that if your husband doesn't want to go smoke outside, then he isn't thinking about your feelings and what you need..Thats not too cool in my book, if he knew my wishes to stop smoking I would do anything I could to help you quit and not do it in the house anymore...I pray that the both of you stop smoking so that you both can be healthy and well i know just about everything now a days causes cancer, but I would definitely have a heart to heart with him again!!

I don't get some of the replies in this thread.
Of course smoking won't send you to hell, but lets not sugarcoat this.

You have to ask yourself why do I smoke?
If the answer is that you are addicted, then you know full well that addiction to anything is idolatry...and idolatry is a sin. We can read in scripture that we can only have one master. Idolatry to anything puts God in competition with your addiction.

Matthew 6:24
"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

This scripture on 2 masters is not limited to only money. An addiction rules us...Anything that rules is like a master. If smoking doesn't rule you, then you'd be able to quit...or at the very least do everything in your power to quit because you want God to be first in your life. It does seem that you are on that path though, which is a good start.
Ask The Holy Spirit to work in you to help you ditch this evil in your life, and he won't fail you.

Did you use a patch or gum, etc the first time you quit?

You could probably be of great encouragement to those of us who are in the Quitting Smoking Support thread in Health and Fitness.

This post reminds me of a saying my grandmother told me more than 40 years ago:

Blessed is the man who has nothing to say and cannot be persuaded to say it.

Idolatry is not chemically induced.
