Just out my back door I have fish, wild game and lots of crawdads.
The mourning doves might live longer because I'd miss their singing.

I have grown successful gardens plenty of times and enjoy it. But doing it as a means to survive would be scary. I'd be pretty protective of my garden. It makes me think of the pioneers that faced this every spring.
Just after coming out of a long and hungry winter.

Just think of all of the precious veggie seeds we wash down the garbage disposal.
Sometimes I feel ashamed when I wash away bell pepper seeds that look so promisingly full of hope [&:].

Squirrel is greasy. But aside from that it tastes just like chicken![:D]

But on the serious side, Japan's hunger becomes a dire warning for other nations
quote:

"This was the first time the Government has had to take such drastic action since the war," said Akio Shibata, an expert on food imports, who warned the Agriculture Ministry two years ago that Japan would have to cut back drastically on its sophisticated diet if it did not become more self-sufficient.
This should hit home to us, we are having to import wheat for the first time ever and with the ethanol craze we are currently going through it isn't going to get better, locally or worldwide.

Bio-fuels are a joke. The energy used to create them nullifies any positive impact they might have.

BTW, did I stumble upon a food network thread? My 2 cents. Seems like squirrels are everywhere in great numbers so what the heck. Coming soon to a grocer near you. Maybe I can start an IPO for my new food company. I think I'll call it "Rocky the Edible Squirrel". You think Bullwinkle would be offended?

Consumer survey says the name is poor though and it leaves the impression the food will be stale like a rock. ; )

Yeah. I thought it was too long too! How about R & B Organic Foods? It could appeal to the new "going green" trend. What's the trans fat content of those little buggers anyway?

Another healthy choice! Rachel Ray's cooking up some recipes as we speak (or is that type).

ta_mosquito -> RE: FINAL WARNING: Food Rationing in the United States RIGHT NOW (4/23/2008 1:53:34 PM)

No trans fats in natural/organic foods, since trans fat is a man-made substance.

Go for it! Heck, if we eat rabbits (those pesky creatures), why not squirrels?

Could it be the government wants more control through a false claim of global warming (al bore has said that is what he wants) and to do so will lead to further control of people through food distribution? We already control people with food distribution through governemt welfare to individuals.

Shouldn't this thread be in the Conspiracy folder where it can receive the attention it deserves?

Which part? The part where Costco is limiting purchases of food staples? The part where Sam's Club announced today they are imposing purchase limits? The part where the global food price is up 80% over a year ago? Or the part where there have been food riots in Mexico, Indonesia, Haiti, and several African countries in the last few weeks? Or, maybe all of it.

There are some actions being taken that takes it out of the conspiracy zone unfortunately.

How about USA Today?

cog41 -> RE: FINAL WARNING: Food Rationing in the United States RIGHT NOW (4/23/2008 7:28:42 PM)

The Fed. govt. will eventually control all food distribution centers and actual food distribution. They will use all the scares such as mad cow, ecoli, banned pesticides etc.. as well as the socalled shortages and cutbacks. They "know best" where the food is needed and who should get it.
Stalin and the Ukraine?

I am not talking about food prices going up - that is a normal cycle. Not something to be 'chicken little' about and claim we're going to find food stores with their shelves bare this summer.

A farm is a business and if they didn't make money they would all go out of business. Only the government can "survive" eight bad years in a row and still be in business. (Of course they can float bonds and print more money.) Government subsidies help farmers stay afloat. It makes sense since food is one of the most necessary commodities.

BTW, I wish the government would subsidize my business for NOT doing my job. I would have even more time to haunt these threads! [:D][sm=icon_smile_yikes.gif][sm=icon_smile_faint.gif]

The looming food crisis

Land that was once used to grow food is increasingly being turned over to biofuels. This may help us to fight global warming - but it is driving up food prices throughout the world and making life increasingly hard in developing countries. Add in water shortages, natural disasters and an ever-rising population, and what you have is a recipe for disaster. John Vidal reports

The mile upon mile of tall maize waving to the horizon around the small Nebraskan town of Carleton looks perfect to farmers such as Mark Jagels. He and his father farm 2,500 acres (10m sq km), the price of maize - what the Americans call corn - has never been higher, and the future has seldom seemed rosier. Carleton (town motto: "The center of it all") is booming, with $200m of Californian money put up for a new biofuel factory and, after years in the doldrums, there is new full-time, well-paid work for 50 people.

But there is a catch. The same fields that surround Jagels' house on the great plains may be bringing new money to rural America, but they are also helping to push up the price of bread in Manchester, tortillas in Mexico City and beer in Madrid. As a direct result of what is happening in places like Nebraska, Kansas, Indiana and Oklahoma, food aid for the poorest people in southern Africa, pork in China and beef in Britain are all more expensive.

Challenged by President George Bush to produce 35bn gallons of non-fossil transport fuels by 2017 to reduce US dependency on imported oil, the Jagels family and thousands of farmers like them are patriotically turning the corn belt of America from the bread basket of the world into an enormous fuel tank. Only a year ago, their maize mostly went to cattle feed or was exported as food aid. Come harvest time in September, almost all will end up at the new plant at Carleton, where it will be fermented to make ethanol, a clear, colourless alcohol consumed, not by people, but by cars.

The era of "agrofuels" has arrived, and the scale of the changes it is already forcing on farming and markets around the world is immense. In Nebraska alone, an extra million acres of maize have been planted this year, and the state boasts it will produce 1bn gallons of ethanol. Across the US, 20% of the whole maize crop went to ethanol last year. How much is that? Just 2% of US automobile use.

"Probably hasn't looked any better than it looks right now," Jerry Stahr, another Nebraskan farmer, told his local paper recently.

Jagels and Stahr are part of a global green rush, one of the greatest shifts that world agriculture has seen in decades. As the US, Europe, China, Japan and other countries commit themselves to using 10% or more alternative automobile fuels, farmers everywhere are rushing to grow maize, sugar cane, palm oil and oil seed rape, all of which can be turned into ethanol or other biofuels for automobiles. But that means getting out of other crops.

Rest of Story HERE

Has anyone blamed the Global Warming folk? Using all that corn for E-85 helped bring this about.

StephK -> RE: FINAL WARNING: Food Rationing in the United States RIGHT NOW (4/24/2008 3:11:23 PM)

I believe we have. I know I did.

Price of pasta has gone through the roof and will continue to rise due to wheat shortages.

ta_mosquito -> RE: FINAL WARNING: Food Rationing in the United States RIGHT NOW (4/24/2008 10:16:48 PM)

Pasta does go bad after a while. Don't stockpile too deeply.
