MattPaasch -> Banjo in SG (4/21/2008 3:34:45 PM)

My brother plays the banjo, and may play it for the quartet we're starting. We've made it a challenge to see how many songs we can find that have the banjo in them. Some I've never really noticed, like the Cathedrals "Step Into The Water". But even the Kingsmen have a banjo on one of the new songs from their album "When God Ran".

Can you help us?

• Ain't God Good - Gold City
• Beautiful Home - Kingsmen
• Come Unto Me - Bishops
• Gospel Road - Kingsmen
• If God Be For Us - Gold City
• I'm Feeling Fine - Cathedrals
• I'm Gonna Move - Gold City
• I Can't Even Slow Down - Bishops
• Step Into The Water - Cathedrals

This should be fun. Well, i can name a ton of the Lewis Family with Banjo, but thats probably cheating! lol , cause they use the banjo for just about everything.

Jeff_from_Kentucky -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/21/2008 4:17:40 PM)

The Isaacs use a banjo on nearly every song they do. I believe the Primitive Quartet does as well

MattPaasch -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/21/2008 4:33:45 PM)

Here's another one....

I've Got That Old Time Religion - Legacy 5

I find it funny that they'd go to London to record with an orchestra, and yet an instrument invented here in the US is featured on one of the songs!

NEWNAMEGIRL -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/21/2008 5:08:49 PM)

"Still drinking water from the well" one of my favorites by The Cathedrals.
"Paid in full through Jesus Amen" Greater Vision nice classic banjo. hehehe I like to hear a good banjo in a song. :)

MattPaasch -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/21/2008 5:11:37 PM)

• I Just Can't Make It By Myself - Cathedrals
• As It Was In The Days Of Noah - Cathedrals
• Ride On God's Carefree Children - Cathedrals

I bet Daniel can come up with more from the Cathedrals! [8D]

Oh No that tells me you ain't from the south. Not knowing what a juice harp is. That is unheard of down here. That is like not having grits on a breakfast table.

Get this-- a jaw harp is the only instrument I know how to play, besides the spoons! (I own both)

Perhaps someday I'll learn how to play the washboard! [8D]

I couldn't think of that many more.

• Ride On, God's Careworn Children (1980)[8D]
• Keep On the Firing Line - Cathedrals (1980)
• I'm Feelin' Fine - Cathedrals (1988)

By the way, one more that didn't have Banjo (I think) but seems like it would fit well would be "The Old Account Was Settled Long Ago."

DJSfromCleveland -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/21/2008 6:23:35 PM)

Man, my mind is just completely blank! lol, usually i could think of some off the top of my head, but i will have to go throuh my music and come back to this later. I used to be sharper, i would be able to tell you a whole list just from off the top of my head. Oh well, i'm getting old.[:D]

Thanks Sam... And welcome to the forums!!!

Hey Everyone... this is my youngest brother!

Oh.. and here's another one: Travelin' Shoes - Legacy Five

PaulPate -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/22/2008 12:22:27 AM)

When The Kingsmen had a full band, (in the Anthony Burger days), they used a banjo quite a bit in their live performances. I don't know how many projects they had it on, but Daniel has probably covered them. Also, Tim Lovelace used to play banjo with The Florida Boys.

JETTY -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/22/2008 11:04:51 AM)

a little late posting here, but...my pastor plays the banjo & it sounds great on just about all of the "old-time" classics, Mansion Over the Hilltop, Just a Little Talk with Jesus, I'll Fly Away, I Never Shall Forget the Day....to name a few.

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/23/2008 9:44:20 AM)

I'd Rather Be An Old Time Christian-- Kingsmen

try all old Crabb Family songs. I love the version of Something's Going On In The Graveyard, Ain't No Grave, Don't You Wanna Go. any Crabb Family.

well loving Bluegrass over any music, gotta love a banjo.

Hey Matt, I have already said won't sing in a quartet when I start unless has bluegrassy sound.

Yes, the Kingsmen had a couple good banjo pickers, Gary Dillard (Beaver), and Sam Crowe. When Randy Miller came , i don't think he played the banjo.

I didn't think of that one! Thanks!

I love the sound a banjo gives... makes it perfect for any quartet! [:)]

Look at some of the Primative Qt. music and songs a great blend of bluegrass and roots and southern gospel music.

What ever happened to Sam? Did he go the way of most all good SG musicians?

DaveW -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/25/2008 2:59:42 PM)

Not SG, but John Michael Talbot has some really awesome banjo stuff in his earlier recordings. The solo on his New Earth album should be "required listening" for anyone remotely interested in banjo.

BTW, before he was a believer, he was the banjo player for Mason Profit.

quaidnewcome -> RE: Banjo in SG (4/25/2008 4:10:32 PM)

Anthony Burger, Garry Dilliard, Tim Surrett, and Greg Fox made the best SG band ever. [:)]

Another song with banjo is "For All The Days That End In Why" by Poet Voices. I've always wondered WHAT IN THE WORLD WERE THEY THINKING?[8D]
No, I just don't understand why a banjo should be in a serious ballad. I heard another recent song on radio with a banjo, but can't think of the name right now.
By the way, if you want to hear something absolutley bizzare, imagine the Hinson's song "That I Could Still Go Free" with a banjo playing in the verses. I've heard it before, and let's say that it wasn't the best idea.
Another one is from Triumphant, something about a white flag.
