Is it acceptable for Christians to buy lottery tickets, the lotto or scratch cards? If you wish - please give reasons for or against. Thank you.

I voted yes. Mainly because it is just a way for the States to raise revenue for variuos functions of the State i.e. education. It is not necessarily a game of chance so I don't see it as gambling. I support the Florida school chilluns' about once a year with a dollar or two.

One would have to ask the question is it a sin according to the Bible. The mere act of playing a game for money may not be a sin. But if there is greed behind it, maybe so. Some may argue that playing the stock market is from greed or even sweepstakes which are free is from greed. Still, other could argue that playing the ring toss for a prize is gambling and stems from the desire to receive. Dare I say some Christians turn paying tithes and giving offering as putting something in to get something in return. Giving hoping we get more back than we put in. My question would be, what would you do with the money if you won it? Would you bless others? Or would you keep it all for yourself? I think it has more to do with intentions than with the act of playing. If a Christian should win the lottery and can bless others, then so be it. I think the lottery has a negative stigma to it because it was illegal back then and gangs and mobs use to "run" numbers. So, just as alcohol was looked at as bad during prohibition, so has playing the "numbers game."

It's not acceptable for this christian. It's foolish. (if the money goes to a good cause give directly to that cause and cut out the middle man....100% of all proceeds do not go into education - they have overhead to cover. You can also take the tax deduction and give that directly to the good cause.) It encourages the state to continue to take advantage of the most ignorant and poor population in our society. I see nothing of value to be gained. "All things are permissiable" was the Corinthian slogan "Not all things are beneficial" was God's reply to the carnal Corinthians.

every once in a while, i'll join in with the office pool to buy lottery tickets. i don't see anything wrong with it as long as it doesn't become a vice, or as long as you know your chances of actually winning are zero. we do it literally once, maybe twice per year as an office. however, if you live for the lotto, then, well, yeah, i'd say it's a sin. anything can be a sin, even if it's not specified in the bible, if it takes over your life. if it's a stumbling block for you, or if you really struggle with it, then stop doing it. otherwise, good luck and share some of those winnings with me.

Is it a sin, no; but the odds make it a dumb thing to do. But praise God folks don't get sent to hell based on their IQ. Thanks RC

Gambling(or 'gaming' as the industry prefers to call)by it's very nature is a loosing proposition. I can't understand why seemingly intelligent people voluntarily tax themselves with no chance of return or tax benefit except the rush of a net loss. At least when I fill up with gas I anticipation some benefit for the next 300 miles or so or some protection from my police/fire departments.

She says that she'd really appreciate seeing the money that comes in through lotto instead of funds previously marked for the ed system being trimmed back by that amount. She says the school system hasn't improved a bit since lotto. I figure I might as well keep the dollar or two since it won't increase funds for schools.

I believe it's a waste of money, time and effort and even nervousness. It encourages people to become complacent and lazy. Thank God I've never purchased one even tho I've had co-workers and acquaintances who did that and even encouraged me to which I said NO!

We got the lottery here a year or two ago (eta to add that it's been longer than that ) and nothing's changed. We even call ours the SC Education Lottery. puhleaze... But, no, I don't think it's a sin.

In Georgia they promised to use the funds for new programs, technology, pre-k and Hope scholarships. They stated that they would not use it to replace funds that were already earmarked for schools (something they did in NH). I think eduction gets 25%, the vendors a small portion and 50% goes to the prize. (not sure of percentages) Do I buy one now and then? Sure. Do we make up stories in our mind about how we'd use the windfall. Sure (hey pastor, are you sitting down? We have one nice tithe check for ya) Do I think gambling can become an idol and get out of hand? It happens all too often, sadly.

I've been legal to play lotteries here for 26 years, and in that time I've lost about twenty bucks. I guess that tells you which way I voted. Personally, I've spent a lot more money on dart tournament entry fees, but I'm definitely in the black there. The owner of a local butcher shop won the lottery a couple of weeks ago and he gave free chicken legs the following Friday.

I am gonna spend my six bucks on the lotto before Wednesday. I pray that His will, will be done and that satan has no part in it. Over the years, planning on what to do with the money, how it will challenge me and the responsibility, spiritually, of it, I have come to the conclusion that winning the lottery would be a lot of work.
