My first memories of hearing southern gospel music were as a very young child (six or younger) hearing the sounds of the Rambos, Happy Goodmans, and Hemphills played on LP in our home. I still love those three groups.

My first concert was Gold City Quartet, The McGruders, and the Bibletones Quartet in Leesville, Louisiana in the late 80's or early 90's.

Gold City consisted of Tim Riley, Mike LeFevre, Ivan Parker, and Brian Free.

Ahhh, that's an easy one for me! My father was the bass in a quartet that sang on a Dayton, Ohio station each week. They were called the Gospel Mariners. They sang in churches in southern Ohio and eastern Indiana, usually on Sunday evenings. The families would go along and have a great time! They would also sing at events with some of the big names--Blackwood Brothers, Statesmen, and many others.

He sang in the quartet almost all of my childhood and teen years. I have many are fond memories!

My first memory was borrowing the Cathedrals' High and Lifted Up CD from the Library. Once I heard "Death has Died," I was intrigued. It was a little while before I was completely hooked, though.[:)]

I think I am going to date myself with this. I remember seeing the Blackwoods when RW was still alive singing with them. Sometime in the very early 50's. Been to many years ago to know the exact year.

my first memory was hearing this group in the car with my mom when I was really young and singing along with it. I dont even think the group is around anymore. I also started singing in church southern gospel songs when I was 4.
Then I remember when I got a little older around maybe 13-14 being dragged to them Gaither shows. I hated them things at that age cause they were too long to me!
My next memory would be in 2005 when I was forced to go to this church that was having 4 groups. That I remember it was the Booth Brothers, Collingsworth family, Talleys and another group that I dont remember. I ended up buying Lauren's latest album (which still is the lastest album) and actually asking to go back in Nov. 2006 when they returned to that church. My moms look when I asked to go back was priceless! That church booked them around the holiday time every year.. I can only remember going to two of them. That church no longer books southern gospel concerts so we started seeing them elsewhere. Which once a year has turned into a lot more a year.
I remember we were going to PA to see them once last year around March and someone at our church said to my mom "your going clear to PA for a concert?" My mom replied with "hey when your daughter wants to go to a christian concert..you take her." lol Needless to say that has died down and now I have to beg!

I listened to the Mull Singing Convention on television on Sunday mornings before church when I was a child.

The show is still on and is one of the oldest continuous television shows of any kind.

It was many years later that I actually became a SG fan.

WOW!!! My first concert was the Happy Goodmens...
they came out singing Howard, Sam, Rusty, and Tanya....they sang half of the 1st song....you could hear the people saying "where's Vestel" then Sam stepped to the edge of the stage and said " I know who your looking for"
Vestel comes out singing the 2nd verse...WOW!! the place went nuts.....and I was 12 and HOOKED

My first was a Cathedral concert in 1980. I was 6. I remember asking my mom, "Is that George's real voice or his fake voice?" [:D]

It was probably somewhere between 2000 and 2002. It wasn't until 2004 or so that I got really hooked.[:)]

My first crystal clear memory was when I was a very young girl seeing The original Hinsons in what was their last trip to Will Rogers Auditorium in Ft. Worth, TX. I remember sitting on the aisle with my parents looking up to them as they sang so powerfully and just crying. I was so young, I didn't really have a connection with them, nor did I understand what their history had been and what it had meant to SG. But even that little, I knew that they had been something special and that it was a sad loss to the music for them to end. After the concert we were at the waffle house and I remember seeing that big tour bus pull up and the crowd of Hinsons piling off. When they all stopped to talk to me and Ronnie took the time to sign my shirt... I was so happy. That experience, along with seeing The Cathedrals so many times in my young years built a love for this music that will never go away.

Back in the early 80s there was a local SGM quartet that sang for an orgqanization I belonged to. Before that I had enjoyed gospel quartets that sang as part of Country music programs & loved The Statler Bros. but that was the 1st time I heard SGM that I knew of. My first major concert came a couple of years later when I went to a local auditorium to hear the Battle of Songs with Gold City & J.D. Sumner & The Stamps. I was hooked!

My first concert was Gold City and I was hooked! (I had heard albums of theirs beforehand, but wasn't sold on them until I saw them live). The group consisted of Steve Ladd (new tenor), Jon Wilburn, Daniel Riley, Bill Lawrence (was either filling in for Tim or had just joined), Adam Borden, Channing Eleton, and Doug Riley.


That was about 2004 or so.

I have a very vague memory of an Inspirations Concert when I was very very young... My first clear memory of a "professional" southern Gospel concert would be October 28, 1995. It was Ray Flynn Promotions' 'Christian's Alternative To Halloween". I was 13 and my best friend and I got in free with her mom! I wanted to go because of The Bishops. They were my absolute favorite group at the time and remained so until their disbandment in 2001. I was devastated!!!
Anyway, the concert was awesome, and I have been going to that event ever since! (as well as hundreds of others!!)

In the womb probably...but the first I can remember was an "all night singing" at the civic center (Salem...Ruth) and there was the Goodmans, Inspirations, Blue Ridge Qt., Kingsmen, Oak Ridge Boys, Hopper Bros. & Connie, Gaither Trio and the list goes on....1970 time frame.

Can't remember which came first. The old city auditorium in Atlanta where they hadd all night singings (ALL NIGHT TOO), or the Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee, GA when the fair was held at the old Towns County School and the singing was outside under a big tent. Whichever one came first I can't remember but I became a fan of Southern Gospel Music. Both events brought large crowds of people. The fair still continues today. They have SG music both Sundays and at the Fall Festival in October another two Sundays of SG music. As long as I can remember the fair has brought The Inspirations, The Primitives and The McKameys to the fair on the first Sunday of the fair. Only within the last two years have they airconditioned the building where the singings are held. Used to get mighty hot when the building was packed out.

My first southern gospel cd was The Cathedrals 20 Favorites.
First concert was the Florida Boys in 1997 I think. Soon after I also got to see the Cathedrals.

yep...they would end somewhere way into the morning...2am or so....we would leave before then but I remember many a night falling asleep in my seat. Then they started having them at the Roanoke CC & Auditorium. Memories.....

In the early '60s my mother started taking me to concerts that Lloyd Orell promoted throughout the midwest. I remember seeing Mom and Dad Speers, the Lefevres, the Rebels, the Prophets, the Blue Ridge Quartet, the Stamps, and on and on. I have been in love with the music ever since.

I was raised in a very conservative (musically) family and church background. When I was in high school (late 60s) my brother bought a few albums by the Blackwood Brothers, etc. At the time, in our circles, this was about the equivalent of "evil" rock music. Kind of his teen-aged rebellion! However, I liked some of the music, particularly the Blackwoods.
As the years went by I gradually drifted to the Gaither Trio and then eventually to more "inspirational" (e.g. Steve Green, Sandi Patti, etc.) Around 1999-2001 or so I bought a number of CDs from a music club. By "accident" (I still don't know if it was my mistake or theirs) I ended up with a CD by the Cathedrals -- I think it was "Deep in the Heart of Texas." I figured it would be too much hassle to try to return it, so I just kept it and played it. Immediately, I was hooked! It brought back that style I had enjoyed in years past. Needless to say, the Cathedrals, and now EHSS, are among my favorites.

My grandfather used to have a bunch on Southern Gospel and Bluegrass Gospel records that he played all the time so I used to hear it almost every time I was at my grandparents house. Many of those records were of small local groups. I wasn't really into it back then but boy do I wish I had all of those records now!

My first introduction to Southern Gospel Music was in the 80's, to the Kingsboys. I first saw them in South Bend, IN with the Kingsmen, and I'm sure one or two other groups, but I don't remember which ones. I followed the Kingsboys until they were Chronicle and eventually disbanded. As the years have passed by, the groups I have been able to hear and attend concerts of has greatly increased. I've never really had ONE favorite groups, I have many favorites!

grew up in a family that loved music of all kinds. but a staple in the household was Kingsmen, London Parris, old Blackwood Bros., Orrels, Rebels, Bibletones, Inspirations, Florida Boys, and many others.

the first group I fell in love with music wise has to be Kingsmen. but I will always love the sound of the original Blackwoods. not many groups didnt love. I fell into a rebel phase of sorts. if it wasnt metal I didnt listen to it. but then I heard Crabb Family song Please Forgive Me and I was a fan till I left the Church again. Jerusalem by Hoppers got me to getting right for good. will say though Crabb Family is a fave forever

I was raised on SGM. My first memory of hearing SGM is riding in the car as a little girl, listening to Brian Free sing "Only God Knows" with Gold City (1989?). My family used to go see Gold City and the Mighty Kingsmen in concert together. I remember seeing them do their KingsGold segments, and I loved Brian Free and Garry Sheppard so much! Listening to my Gold City albums from the 80's brings back so many good memories.
