Hee, yeah we keep the stockpile rotated pretty good. I don't think I've ever had to just toss anything. Some things I've stockpiled and then realized we didn't really care for, if that happens I just send them to the food pantry in plenty of time before they're due to expire.

BTW- we did the stockpile thing for Y2K and all we wound up with was a bunch of extra foods, etc.

We wound up donating lots of canned goods, dried goods, health & beauty stuff to the local homeless shelter.

About 3 years later my soon-to-be-ex was laid off. He didn't even look for work for 18 months. Times got tough, but we never did without.

I'm pretty much posting blind......

But on my last 4 trips to the grocery store (either Wal-mart or Kroger), they've been out of whole wheat flour. Not one bag. I can't remember what Wal-mart has raised their price to, but Kroger is up to $5.29/5lb bag - if you can find one in stock, that is.

It's frustrating.

Wow. That is frustrating. And weird. Maybe somebody is stockpiling. [8D]

ww flour is still on the shelves here, at about $3.20. Of course, we live in an area where I don't imagine a whole lot of people regularly make whole wheat baked goods. If there's a rush on anything around here, it will be white bread and frozen chicken nuggets. [&:]

Our store too. I see lots of carts full of just frozen pizzas..and beer [:D] You can tell which ones are the single guys that live in these apartments.

which we have plenty of at our Kroger. Our prices haven't gone up much.. I think its because we aren't too far from the distribution center.. I am sure the rural areas have a lot higher prices. Our yeast was all expired, people don't bake anymore..

I will agree with ya there. I do stock up, but again, it's more because I hate to shop, which means I don't go to the store again until the shelves are getting empty. I can't remember ever having to throw anything away because it was old/spoiled/buggy or whatever. If you are going to stock large amounts - and I know people who do - then stock the things you normally eat and rotate your stock.

I have been stocking up for about two years as i started to coupons buy on things we us and I can get them free or cheap. I like it becaus eif for any reason i do get to the store be it weather or gas I have food for us for over 6 weeks in a pretty easy to cook form In case elec is out we hace can things, Nor to say I rotate and keep things fresh and I us things as need with no worry as it is my family loves to vist and check out my stock pile . ( I did not shop the month of Jan for any thing) Here laugh I have 28 bottle od name brand salald dress brough last week for only 50 each!. It will be used in many ways. I love being able to share with my daughter and family and to also help out the food need at the church as needed. I never spend over 30-40- a week for two adults and (two children most weeks with us)

I don't hoard or stockpile out of fear. I just try to be a good steward of my money. I am single and never even thought of doing that until a few years ago.

Currently I live in a town where there is only one grocery store. So, there's not much need for competition so prices seem to be a little on the steep side. I go visit my hometown occasionally and there is a store there where the prices are so much lower than my local grocery store so when I go visit family I plan a trip to this store and stock up on things I know I will use on a regular basis. And if I compare what I stock up on there to what I would have paid on a few trips to my local store to cover the same time frame I am saving lots of money. Plus I have learned to like having a little extra on hand because I have come across people who could really use it and it's great to have something you can give to help out someone else going through those rough spots.

I'm also facing the big possibility of being without a job in a few weeks. I didn't go in panic mode but for a while now if something has been on sale...especially the buy one get one free sales, I've built up a little reserve. If I do end up having a gap of time where I'm not working it will be nice to have that not be an issue to be concerned about for a while. And I don't feel this is an act of not trusting God...in fact I thank God for the few times of having a little extra that I was able to do this. And even if I don't lose my job it's not like I have a lot of unnecessary things stocked up....I'll either use it or can bless someone else with it if they need it.

... just one little thought here...

If there was an emergency, how would one cook all that rice or flour, etc.?? I guess if you had a generator, you could use that.

Down here we fire up the grills, camp stoves, gas burners and even use open fire to cook during emergencies. I use the grill to cook more than barbecue. I've baked roasts when it was too hot to cook indoors.

We don't have a grill, so I guess we'd be using an open fire. Fortunately, I learned all about campfire cooking when I was 10. [:D]

Probably someone who is assuming there will be a major emergency should get a good Dutch Oven for baking and cooking. [;)] Rice on a fire would be easy enough, all you have to do is boil the water.

I guess we are to an extent, not because of any one current circumstance, its just been something my husband and I have wanted to do since getting married, have an "emergency stock" and with a baby coming and just not getting financially able, we plan to buy a few extra things...canned goods, rice, flour, etc. We also at some point want to become energy independent one day (and we have plans in place to work towards that so its not totally cooky). I am however planning to purchase some extra corn and flour too due to the floods and storms that that part of our nation has been having...and its on sale this week at our store....

I usually have a huge supply of everything, but we are moving in a week and I have been trying to use what I have. But then again with everything being packed, we have been doing alot of fast food eating. I am so totally going to need my diet back when we are all settled in. But I do plan on stocking up the second I have the keys to my new house. right now I do shop at resturaunt supply and Sam's club. Aldi doesn't raise prices right away so I know I am safe there for a while.
