Re: the little girl in my neighborhood: I quickly found out she didn't speak English.

And poor girl; I think I nearly scared her to death when I opened the door.

I kept trying to get her to come to me because I wanted to see if she was hurt or anything, but she climbed down the steps and ran into my lawn.

She then suddenly ran out into the middle of the street - which almost gave me apoplexy (good thing I live on a quiet street with not a lot of traffic).

Then she just stood in the street and screamed for her mother. I didn't want to go after her because everytime I started to move, she would start running in circles and screaming (I have that effect on kids ).

So, the little girl waited in the middle of the street and I stood at my front door and prayed that no cars would come.


Finally, the mother comes . . . nonchalantly and talking on a cell phone! By now the little girl is crying. The mother takes her sweet time getting to the girl and continues to talk on the phone. When she reaches the girl, she grabs her hand and turns around and starts walking away, dragging the little girl and STILL talking on the phone.

She didn't even seem concerned. Perturbed, yes; concerned no.

I called after the mother a few times and asked her to wait, but she started walking faster.

If I see the little girl out and about again, I'm going to call the police and let them take care of the situation.

The mother didn't even seem to care that her little girl was scared or even that she was wandering around the neighborhood by herself.

It seriously bugs me when parents don't watch their little ones. I'm not talking about when a kid wanders off. That can happen to anyone no matter how diligent you are. However, when it becomes a pattern that the parents don't watch their kids and let them run loose all over the neighborhood, that really burns me up.

Yeah, that would have really burnt my tea to see that.

And yes, that really did happen to me. We had three adults getting supper on the table when Rebekah slipped out the door and run across the street to pick daffodils (no more daffadills there now ). This older policeman was driving by and stopped and brought her home. Fred comes up the stairs and tells me that their iis a policeman waiting downstairs because Rebekah was in the road. I barely coould walk down the stairs, and must have been white because he acted like he thought I was going to pass out. I felt so heart sick. I couldn't sleep for weeks after that.

Yeah, he felt really bad, but he was required to alert CPS. CPS was quite nice and found no neglect. It still makes me ill to think of it though.

I am sooooo glad that she is old enough to know better now.

Status: offline 		I think I've mentioned that I have no nerves left? The ManCub would open the door and leave every time my back was turned. Thank God we lived in the middle of the woods instead of on a busy road. I put latches on the screen doors but he'd stand on something and unlatch the doors.

And he would never answer me when I called. He could be in the house and I'd panic because he wouldn't answer.

And then there was the fact that he'd get up in the middle of the night and get into stuff in the kitchen. One morning there was a stainless steel pan on the floor in front of the refrigerator full of (thawed) frozen waffles and maple syrup. How he did it without waking anyone, even the dogs, I have no idea.

Additionally, there was no place to put anything that he couldn't get to. He'd climb to the top of the fridge if there was something up there he wanted.

Yeah, I have no nerves left.

HA!!! That must have been it. Only now he makes waffles at 6:30am instead of 3am.

He is my "humility child". You see, the GirlChild has been practically perfect in every way since birth. And, foolish, naive woman that I was, I thought it was due to my marvelous parenting skillz. HA!!! God relieved me of that misguided notion in a hurry, let me tell ya.

Status: offline 		We saw some little girls roaming the neighborhood once when we lived in Omaha. One was 3 and the other two. I saw them walking down the street and called to Larry, and ran outside. I saw cars slowing down to look but no one stopped. One lady hollered out the window asking if they were mine.

We called the sheriff, he came and drove them around till he saw some lady yelling for them. He came back to tell us that it was a daycare. I don't know how he found this out but one man told him he saw the kids walking 15 minutes before we got them but didn't call the cops. I was surprised at all the cars (maybe 6-7 that I know of) and that man who didn't stop to help them. Something serious could have happened.

My kids never ran away but I did once. I was so frustrated I said I was leaving and walked out the door. (Larry was in the garage so they weren't alone) I came back 10 minutes later expecting them to have fallen apart, crying and weeping for being such naughty children. Instead I found that Dan had climbed up on a chair to get to the food to feed them.

My ex-neighbor was a girl whose mother died when she was about 11 or 12. She was raised by her father. When the girl was 18 or so her father remarried and went to live with the new wife leaving the daughter and her BF the old house. She had two kids by the time she was 20.

I came home one time and found the kids trike in my yard, across the street from their house. Another time the toddler came across the street and it was several minutes before the parents came looking for her.

Oh and the BF raised fighting pit bulls in the house.

Status: offline 		One summer job in college, I worked at a fruit packing plant. I sold fruit right out of the plant to the public and to cash vendors. I used to get SOOOOO mad at some of the mom's who would bring their little toddlers to the plant with all it's assembly lines, belts, forklifts driving around, etc and they would be completely oblivious to their kids. This is dangerous place - ADULTS can be killed. So here I'd be trying to babysit their kids, sell them fruit and make sure everyone stayed safe...

The problem with that is who would design the test. Some people in the education and political establishment have some crazy ideas.
