I would however listen to Steeleye Span.

That typo is part of the name of one of my favorite music groups.

Time for me to leave the bench.

Tomorrow promises to be a long day at the hospital.

Feel free to carry on without me.

crankius -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/26/2008 10:38:22 PM)

Bye, Kerrlaw. I'll be praying for y'all.

Kerr: Press meat was the same as souse meat.

Several years ago, my mom had a 5 x 7 b&w photo of my grandparents old home. I worked with a black fellow that had a brother that painted pictures. I asked him if he could paint the old homeplace. He could and did. He took the old photo and painted a 36x48 picture. The old well shed and smokehouse was in the photo as well as the homeplace. The fellow was so complete in the painting that he painted barbs on the wire fence and miseltoe in the trees. It was a winter photo. The picture is hanging mom & dads room at the nursing home now. Wouldn't take anything for it. I have some furnitues from my greatgrandmothers home as well as some tools and a pea planter from back then. (late 1800's)

BlessedAngel1983 -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/26/2008 10:51:42 PM)

If it be pleasing to his honor, I wish to retire. Have a blessed evening!

That is so neat. I wish I'd had something that was my great grandparents. Oh wait. I guess I do have a coffeetable Bible which was my great grandmother's. I also have my grandma's coffeetable Bible. I already asked my grandma if I could have her Bible when she dies. To me, the value of a product doesn't matter unless it holds an element of sentiment for me. Her Bible would definitely be meaningful as I used to watch her read it each morning. She is one who marks her Bible up so it would be neat to be able to read her notes. Then I think it would be neat if I got some of her records since I used to listen to them when we'd visit but I'm not going to fight over stuff so God will need to work it out if he wants me to have them.

{{Kerr}} You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Hope you all had a great day today. Good night to those of you already in bed.

Question for his honor:

Why is it that when you transport something by car it is called a shipment but when you transport something by ship it is called cargo?

When I came home this evening, my sweet hubby fixed me a supper of hash browns and scrambled eggs. For the first time in YEARS, I put ketchup on them---because of this thread---but it was an organic kind with no corn syrup. The whole thing was also sprinkled with a little Texas Pete. It was so good. Now I won't need scrambled eggs with ketchup for another 15 or 20 years.

The TV spot went great! I wasn't nervous at all. And they liked my roasted asparagus with fresh herbs. On Monday, I'm making a fruit dessert for that TV spot (different channel). We got a great response and several hits on the website because of it.... [sm=Llol.gif]

Men will do anything to avoid eating leftover roasted asparagus.[sm=cooltilt.gif]

[sm=nosestuckup.gif] See if I share the strawberry/blueberry dessert I'm making on tomorrow's show with you.

Actually, what you said was quite a relief. You have NO IDEA how many times I had to re-word the Texas Pete comment because every which way I turned it left it open for some pretty interesting discussion. I found what I thought was the safest wording.[sm=worried.gif]

Billboy -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/27/2008 8:08:24 PM)

Reading Bobby's posts about hog killings also brought back memories for me. I remember very well the hog butchering events. They were a multi-family deal in our neighborhood. I do not remember that we ever made head-cheese, but I do know others who did, and really liked it. One vivid memory I had was my Grandma, Mom, and Aunt sewing sausage sacks, and the sausage being hung in the sacks to drain before freezing. I also remember the fresh tenderloins. The knowledge of a hog's anatomy served me well when we lived in NC in the 70's. There was a place near Greensboro that specialized in "Pig Pickings". They roasted whole hogs, and the patrons just reached into the roasted hog and picked or pulled out the meat they wanted. I always went for the loin strip.[:D]

Qtman -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/27/2008 8:11:18 PM)

We always killed hogs too. As Bobby said the only thing that was not used was the squeal. If mama could have figured out a way to fry it that would have been used too. I can't think of any thing colder than rubbing salt on hams when it is freezing outside.

phosadaud -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/27/2008 8:11:33 PM)

We never had hogs, but we had cattle. We didn't do the butchering, but we always got one "cow" for the freezer when my dad took them to the slaughter house. I'm not sure what happened to some of the parts, but as poor as we were, my mom had standards. There were no tongues, hearts, etc in that freezer.

Billboy -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/27/2008 8:18:18 PM)

When they rendered the lard there were also some "cracklin's", and as I remember they were not too bad to eat at the time. I know some of the older guys really liked them.

BlessedAngel1983 -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/27/2008 8:21:53 PM)

Did they ever make Cracklin' Cornbread?

We had cattle, too, but I do not remember them being butchered on the farm, either. I think they were taken to a local butcher to process.

Billboy I liked the homemade pork skins. But never really liked the crackling anyother way. Especially in cornbread. Of course I don't like fat meat either.[:'(]

Qtman -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/27/2008 8:27:12 PM)

Some were talking the other day about pork brains and eggs. My only experience with this is the worst whipping(whupping) I ever got was because of pork brains. My granddad har knocked a hog in the head and was going to cut its throat and hang it up. When he stuck the hog the hog woke up and started to run around the hog lot. The poor critter was actually bleeding to death. Being the knod hearted soul I am I shot the hog with a 30-06. Of course I shot it in the head. The hog died immediately but the brains were ruined. Billboy -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/27/2008 8:35:41 PM)

We always used a 22 rifle. Of course the honor of killing the hog had to be done by a very senior member so as to not ruin any vital parts, or cause undue sufferring. An older guy told a story one time that he went to a neighbor's farm to help with a hog killing. He got the hog up into a pen and then looked up and 4 of the neighbor's sons had the pen surrounded, all packing 22's. He said he hollared "Hold it", excused himself from the pen and left the premises, not wanting to get caught in a crossfire.[;)]

phosadaud -> RE: Kerrlaw Convenes Court (4/27/2008 8:37:51 PM)

I'm glad we never butchered our own meat. I love meat, but I also have a special spot in my heart for animals so I don't like to think about where my hamburger patty came from... [8D]

Me too. I can eat meat, but not an animal that I've met.

This conversation was in our Sunday school class today:

Nice lady: We have a fresh cow in our freezer.

My hubby: You better get him out of there. He's probably cold!
