I remember watching live coverage of the Watergate trials in my history class in high school. Of course this was pre C-Span.

I've long since adjusted - but I still feel a bit antsy every two years. When I look back over my life, I see that I have the urge to change something in my life - right around the time when we would have moved. Isn't that strange - that all these years later I'd still feel that way?

Is that a joint? I'm really not familiar with that term. Maybe it's regional.

yes, that's right. and yes, it was one of my teachers too.
in fact, that's why the doobie brothers were called the "doobie" brothers.

I had heard it but wasn't sure if it was really true, then I saw them in an interview and the interviewer asked them about their name and they said their name came from doobie as in joint.

.. you not only know what a doobie is, you know that ...

...the band Jefferson Airplane is named for a homemade roach clip you make out of a match (the cardboard kind you get out of a matchbook, not the wooden kind)

...the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about LSD

..."Puff the Magic Dragon" is about marijuana

...you know more than one nickname for marijuana

or so I've heard.

cinwood and doinkdom - hi there fellow brats!

What bases did you grow up on? I only grew up on three: Ft. Richardson, AK; Ft. Hood, TX; and Ft. Meade, MD.

Hi back!

I was born at Ft. McPherson, GA, lived at Ft. Devens, Mass; Fulda, Germany; Ft. Monroe, VA and my dad retired at Ft. McClellan, AL

I absolutely relate to everything y'all are talking about. Ft. Monroe was my favorite post - I actually got to "grow up" there [5th - 10th grade].

Culture shock is right!!!!! I married a local boy here in Alabama and really wanted to give my children the opportunity to grow up in the same neighborhood, go to school with the same kids, and actually know their grandparents, aunts & uncles, cousins, etc. Even so, there have been intervals of time when I have yearned for a move and a change of scenery.

I am getting a bit irked by all these "new songs" coming out but they are just different words to 70s tunes.

Example:
Kid Rocks' All Summer Long is simply Werewolves of London and Sweet Home Alabama in disguise.

My birthfather was a Marine, but I don't think that counts even though he didn't want to place sis and I for adoption.

I didn't know 'doobie' was regional.

Frankly, I'm stunned when I hear reports that drugs in school are worse now. They would have to be truly heinous if they're worse than when I was in school. During the lunch periods the potheads would go in the restrooms and smoke. They also ate in there as well. So it was pretty common to walk into the restrooms during that time and see people smoking dope.

I was pretty straight laced, but I don't ever remember going to a party in high school where there was no one smokin' dope or doing something else, and you could tell that if anyone smoked dope in the house, the parents were "cool." If the parents were "uncool," kids smoked outside. Oh, and you could never tell by looking at someone if they smoked dope or not. Almost everyone did. I can count on one hand the number of people I knew who did it and maybe have one finger left over.

I remember backmasking. Can't give any specific examples, though. I do remember that a Christian group did it once, I don't remember who, and their backmasked message was something like "What are you looking for the devil for when you should be looking for the Lord?" That may have been the 80's though.

Anybody remember string art?
