I just heard a statistic that said that 80% of first time senior pastors fail within 3-5 years, that is they are asked to leave the church. The main problem was not so much the preaching but the leadership skills. So my caution would be to insure that this young man has support from a mentor or several mentors both inside the particular church and outside that particular church.

I was once in denomination where pastors only stayed 2 years on average (a figure I saw published in some of the denom. literature). A pastor cannot even get to know his congregation and the community well enough to be effective in only 2 years.

Funny story..... My husband was to preach a trail sermon and we arrived at the church and went to take our little girl to the nursery. The older men's Sunday School class is right next door. The walls are very thin. We overheard them talking about us. One of them said, "He sure is young." Another replied, "Yep, but he is young so we can train him the way we want him to be". LOL.

Oh, too funny! I hope you never told them about the thin walls! They could have guaranteed your continuing education in that church!

We just kept it to ourselves and get a good chuckle out of it every now and then.

Haven't read all the other responses, but my husband was 32 when he took this church, our first. He's doing great. He's still learning, but he has a servants heart and a teachable spirit. And I hope he always keeps learning how to lead. He has a formal mentor that he meets with. He's a part of a leadership development team and he has a father who was a pastor, my father is a pastor and his 'adoptive' father is a pastor. I'd say he's covered for examples. Don't judge simply on age, it is a factor, but one thing to consider, he doesn't have any bad habits as a result of a pastorate yet.

I'm a minister about to turn 31. I have been preaching now for eight years. No one seems to care about my age, though I've heard plenty of comments about it, mostly in jest. People are more concerned about your attitude, your actions, and your maturity. Even though their life expectancy was different, I can imagine that people questioned Jesus' age (of course, he was 30 when he started his ministry). Though the son of God, his maturity and faith in the Father allowed him to deny the actions of a fleshly person of his age as he focused on his purpose and ministry. If a person has the spirit of God and is humble and willing to yield, if he is under the guidance of a good group of elders who look after him spiritually and he submits to, if he is willing to listen and thinks of himself as a servant instead of an "expert" or authority, a minister can do great things regardless of age. As for me, I still have a lot to learn. But I've learned that all of us do. What's most important is what a minister's heart is. If his heart is where it should be, a 20, 30, 40, etc. year old minister will do the Lord's work.

It’s true the Church needs good earthly leaders, but you would think God’s people would be a little better at following…

Maybe the Church needs more “followship” classes and less leadership classes.

Then age wouldn't be such an issue.

Seagullplayer, I love the 'followship' class idea, for we are told in Scripture that he who is to be the leader will be the servant of all.

As to Jesus being 30 at that time men started working in teens and that was also the age required to be priest in that day.

Or senior Pastor came to us at age thirty and two years later the church is doing very well. He does have a group of older pastors that he prays with and seeks guidence from in situations, but he is truly a man of God, and seeks his heart in all things.
