quote:
ORIGINAL: Snowdrift I have a friend who has been shaky in faith for the past year or so, but yesterday he admitted to me that he finally, truly didn't believe in God or the Christian faith. His main reason, he says, is because the Bible says God doesn't give us more than we can handle, in terms of trials and tests, but if that was true why do people commit suicide? He had a bunch of other questions and no matter how much I tried to explain this idea of trials and whatnot he insisted that he just can't believe. I don't know what to do and I feel like I'm doing a poor job trying to explain to him...He's a close friend and I feel incredibly sad that he's lost his faith, and I feel like I have nobody with whom to talk about this myself, because my parents are also skeptics that I've been trying to convince and my friends aren't that religious either. The worst thing is that he, ironically, was chosen to go on a missions trip this summer at church, and he says he's still going to go on with it even though he himself doesn't believe, and he won't even talk to anybody else about this. What should I do? Sounds like a pretty hard situation you're in. Im no bible scholar, but where does it say God will not give us more than we can handle? I ask this not as a challenge, but because Ive never read that and I would like to. These are questions that are unanswerable, at least as far as my limited wisdom goes. Why are there suicides, why are there wars, why are there people that hurt children, why are there people that murder? Why are there people on this earth that would cause any harm to other people? Are there people who have lost their way? Definitely, yes? I have plenty of times myself. The light cannot exist without the dark. But we always have a choice. Maybe talk to your friend about doing some work with people who are considering ending their lives. Maybe spending some time with them. Showing them the human kindness they desperately need. Now that my friend, is a noble pursuit.
