Jordan:

Sometimes the post on his site will do that. I do not believe people intend to do so, but sometimes the broken disconnected communication tends to do that. Also, often people will get into deep debates about some very minor issue. Theoretically these issues may be important, but may not have any real bearing on your original question.

I believe most people, even those with minor disagreements with Ryrie, will tell you the Ryrie Study Bible is a good choice for general study. I use one myself, but as many have mentioned, I also reference other bible translations and commentaries.

Bottom line – if the Holy Spirit speaks to you through the reading of your Ryrie bible that is all that matters. Do not let The Evil One so distract you with concerns over bible translations and study aids that you simply stop studying out of frustration.

May GOD speak to you through the READING of his word!

Read the Scripture in any of them, and take the commentary with 65 lbs. of salt.

Another one not mentioned that I have and enjoy is the Dake's Bible, some of his doctrine is really way out there in left field, but it is a treasure trove of statistics about the Bible.

Thanks

In my opinion, these would be good study Bibles. Some of them come from different theological perspectives which are important to recognize, but they all have good scholarship.

MacArthur Study Bible
Zondervan Study Bible (NASB, and they also have NIV)
Reformation Study Bible
Ryrie Study Bible
Nelson's NKJV Study Bible

None of them are 100% correct! But all of them will be helpful.

I'm sure others can recommend study Bibles they like. I use a crazy variety.

But my every day Bible has no commentary.

Bible book stores or online.

I would suggest a complete concordance and a word study to help (nothing wrong with Strong's).

You can go to e-sword and down load a lot of stuff including the basic program for free, or use the study aids here at crossroads.

Yes--mine is a reference Bible. It also has a concordance in the back. Mine is a Thomas Nelson, NKJV.

I have two reference bibles with no commentaries, the one I use primarily is an NIV from oxford press, and the other is the "Wide Margin NASB". Both have very good concordances in the back.

Dear Jordan,
The Ryrie Study Bible is good, but very denominational.

Jordan:

The truth is finally surfacing. Your old Pastor --bless His soul -- has either never studied the Ryrie KJV or he does not understand the meaning of "denominational". I am non-denominatial, and believe me, tere is nothing that Ryrie says that would lead you to believe that he is supporting any particular denomination. So this is an utterly false allegation.

quote:

He's not Spirit Filled.

Now this is a little more serious, since this brother is attempting to sit in judgment over another brother's being Spirit filled or not. However, this comment reveals that your old Pastor has put his support behind charismatic/pentecostal doctrine which falsely teaches that a Christian is not "Spirit filled" unless he has spoken in tongues. By implication, this pastor has accused all non-charismatic Christians of being less than Spirit filled.

However, this is probably what you will find in Hayford's NKJV, so, as I said before, if you are leaning towards charismatism, then that will be your cup of tea. Otherwise, the Ryrie Study Bible -- KJV will more than meet your needs.

quote:

Consequently, you must be watchful to not just eat every comment without adding our Spirit Filled convictions.

Here we go again. Well frankly, this so-called "Spirit filled" teaching is false doctrine. And it is also spawning many other false doctrines such as the Word of Faith and Prosperity gospels.

In light of these comments, you owe it to yourself to carefully study the Ryrie Study Bible, and then inform your old pastor of the truth. He is both misled and misleading you.

Stick to your guns, man. You invested in a Ryrie Study Bible. So get down to business and study the Word. Ryrie won't lead you astray.

Jordan wasn't asking about every Bible that's on the market or whether commentaries are bad. He was specifically concerned about the Ryrie Study Bible. And for someone who may be relatively new to the faith, a sound, conservative, evangelical/fundamental study Bible can be a tremendous help.

Now Jordan is simply getting confused because he's being told that Bibles with comments are not as good as Bibles without etc. etc. That's an entirely separate issue.

Jordan, listen to what Ryrie says in his Preface:

quote:

Useful as helps can be, the most important thing is to READ THE BIBLE ITSELF. THIS IS GOD'S WORD TO YOU. I pray that these notes will serve to make it clearer and more personally meaningful.

You're welcome, Jordan.

The only caveat I would give about Ryrie's notes is that his comments about textual matters should be further investigated. I do not agree with him on those points, e.g. the last 12 verses of Mark.

Ryrie is not a textual scholar, and he relies on others who are not reliable (as do many other sound, conservative scholars to their detriment).

Alright. I just believe that a Bible is a Bible and that's what I should take it for, and that's why I should read it.

Yes...If one is not used to it it can do that. But if you stick with it, you will get used to it It won't take that long, really.

The first time I read it, I read the whole Bible through and I was not even saved yet. You talk about a head spin

There is a part of me that would hate for you to go through what I did...buy just about every study bible out there and rarely refer to any of them . This is very expensive and a little crazy but in the end it will help you because you will know everything out there and learn how your mind processes information. When in DEEP study, I refer to the notes in my Zondervan KJV Study bible and I have the Spiro Zohides Complete Word Studies and Dictionaries which are the guts plus some of the Hebrew Greek Key Word Study bible.

These days, I mostly read lots of scripture and reflect. I LOVE my KJV NLT 2nd edition parallel, but it lacks a concordance (BOOOOO!! ) So I do pick up my trusty Thompson Chain KJV because it was my first study bible and I am most familiar with it. I have grown tremendously in my understanding of the bible by reading two to several translations per passage. I check out the Hebrew and Greek here and there but carefully.

In some of the instances where "stuff isn't really making sense", the reason could be because some of the words don't mean what you think they mean. The English language has changed a lot in 400 years. If you are going to read and study only the KJV, perhaps you should invest in a dictionary that not only tells you what words mean today, but also traces the meanings of that word throughout history so that you can understand what the KJV translators were thinking in the early 1600s.

Or you can read and study your NKJV. It really is a very good translation, just as excellent as the KJV. And, there is no reason to be afraid of using other modern translations. They are also excellent. They are the word of God.

We are not supposed to get into the KJVO debate in any thread, except the specific thread created for the KJVO discussion. And, I am not trying to get into it here, but I just want to say that a very important fact to understand about Bible versions is the fact that when God guided His servants in writing His word in the New Testament, He led the writers to quote both the Hebrew Old Testament and the ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament, which appears to have been translated from a slightly different version than the version that we know today. So, it is not wrong to study God's word in the different versions He has made available to us today.

And, it also would not be a bad thing if you used several different study Bibles and/or commentaries. But, even if you use only one, study the passage for yourself, thoroughly before you read the study notes. Look up the cross references, look for parallel passages, research the history and context of the passage, etc. Then check the study notes and even use the online Bible study tools to check the commentaries found there.

Most importantly, spend time in prayer before, during, and after your study, asking for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in teaching you and helping you to understand God's word.
