Someone at church gave me a cd of worship songs. I wanted to return the favour by copying a christian film soundtrack. I bought the soundtrack on the internet but if I copy it and give it to two people is that illegal or something. It's not as easy to come by decent christian music over here as over there. It's not so widely played on the radio etc and there is a bit of reliance on people's recommendations.

No that's not bad. It's not illegal unless you're selling it for money.

It's illegal if you're giving it away, too.

I suggest buying her a copy also, like you did for yourself, Ruby.

Then why did they invent blank CDs?

hawknelsonismyfriend -> RE: Is this bad? (4/30/2008 6:11:27 PM)

Yeah, me and my friends borrow each others cds all the time. If I REALLY REALLY like the cd, I'll buy it. I dont think its bad though. If it illegal 99% of people would be arrested.

To archive files, pictures, etc.

And besides, do you think the CD manufacturers really care what you put on the CD? [;)]

To be clear, what is illegal is distributing copyrighted material. That emcompasses almost everything that you didn't create. So, yeah it's illegal. It's pretty hard to enforce that law unless people are doing it in really high quantities. In fact, the authorities couldn't care less if you were giving music to your friends. Who does care are the bands that make the music, and specifically the record companies, because you're basically taking money out of their hands.

I would say it irritates the record companies more than the artists. They're the ones making all the money.
Not that I'm saying it's legal.

yeah, more than anything, it's those record companies that don't like it. That's why they band together to sue people for the money they're owed.

tafkam -> RE: Is this bad? (4/30/2008 7:43:51 PM)

It's not a crime that you're likely to be arrested for, but why would you want to do something that is illegal at worst and ethically questionable at best?

Buy another internet copy for your friend. Simple enough, problem solved....

Regardless of how evil one may think the record companies are, distributing copies of licensed material without the consent of the owner is illegal and it does ultimately prevent monies from going to the owner, manufacturer and distributor of said material.
End of argument.

RHardin15 -> RE: Is this bad? (5/1/2008 8:16:18 AM)

You're exactly right gtrdave. Thats why I said they will sue for the money they are owed. They spend a lot of money distributing and promoting music, and when we cut into their money, they feel it. As Christians, we should be above that. What isn't illegal is making copies of music for personal use, in case you don't like using original copies. You just can't distribute music to anything without permission and I can assure you that in most cases, you're not going to get permission for free.
