I guess that is a "fear" of mine. I only went 2/3 months respectively with my first two and I felt like I just didn't have enough for them. I was also a full-time working mom and did not work very hard at maintaining a pumping/feeding schedule. When Mary was born I was bound and determined to make it a year with her. Now I feel like I will be good just to make it to the beginning of her third month. Ryan is very supportive of me breastfeeding, but he will also make side comments about how he could get a bottle of the frozen milk I've pumped so far and help out. However that will have to happen because I will be going back to work. I don't know what I'm looking for here; those are my thoughts lately.

Good news today, Gideon had a weight check and he gained 7 ounces since Friday (he was still dropping from his birth weight then). I am so pleased. I never had a full milk supply with DD and we had a horrible nursing relationship. It was a constant struggle. It's been so awesome with Gideon and I haven't had to suppliment at all. That's not to say I won't still have to at some point but it sure does feel good to have all systems working right now!

LOL! Hannah's first bit of solids were...Cheerios. But she was also my child who didn't want much to do with solids until after a year. She was very attached to her "milky".

I agree. Hunter did not sleep a full night consistently until he turned a year old. I nursed him at least once a night for his entire first year of life. I know my friends (one bottle fed and one nursed) both had their opinions on that one, but you know what I did what was best for us. It was more work trying to rock him for 30 minutes fussing and in the end I nursed him, 10-15 minutes later we were both back in bed. So for me I started just giving it to him right away, back in bed sooner, and we were both happier in the morning because of it. He dropped that feeding all on his own after a year without any coaxing from me.
Regarding solids -- We tried cereal with Hunter at 4.5 months, but it was to harsh on his tummy. So I went back to breast milk only until 5.5 months. We did do cereal again, but he reacted better that time. He wasn't on cereal long though and moved right to fruits and veggies. I did solids and building up to 3 meals a day slowly. He probably was about 10-11 months before he was on a solid 3 meals a day of food.

I started Isaac out on rice cereal when he was about 4 months because -- well, that's just what you're supposed to do, right?   He became constipated pretty quickly. So I switched to oatmeal and started feeding him green beans. He turned out just fine, although knowing what I know now, I would've done things differently.
Isabel had no solids, only breastmilk, until 6 months. I started her with organic veggies like green beans, peas (ok, well, legumes then). Carrots had too much fiber and she spit them up for a while, so we held off on those. We didn't do cereal until after that, and I gave her oatmeal when we did and she didn't have it very often. I mixed it with her veggies and fruit.

We introduced solids to Reagan at 6 months. It did nothing to help her sleep better.
We are like Sarah and we do a lot of child led feeding. We had one of these and that is where she got the majority of her solid foods from in the beginning. Our pediatrician told us that we could give a baby finger foods when they developed the ability to pick the bits up with their thumb and forefinger. Then (7 months) we gave her soft-boiled peas, bits of bananna, sweet potato, etc.
I did spoon feed her some mashed foods and store bought baby food, but it was very little. Honestly, I loved letting her feed herself. It gave me an opportunity to have her contained & entertained for a while. In the beginning, she would be content for 30 minutes eating a handful cheerios. Those were very peaceful times!
We plan on doing the same with Lincoln. He already reaches for our food & salivates like a starving child when we eat. But he's only 3 months and very huge, so he's just going to have to wait.

Another thing about the cereals.....I don't know the nutrition facts for rice cereal, but I imagine they are close to the baby oatmeal. For 1/4 cup of cereal, there is only 10% daily value of each vitamin, and I don't know any 6 month old that can eat a whole 1/4 cup of cereal.
We did rice cereal with Timmy but it constipated him, so we went to baby oatmeal. We used baby oatmeal with Jimmy too, but it was a pain because he would only eat it made with breasmilk, and I got sick of pumping. I do like the baby oatmeal to help baby learn to eat, it's a nice mild food, but not really any nutritional value. But, that's OK because babies don't get nutritional value from foods before 9-12 months, it's for experiementation.

Chelsea....yes Jake did that to me once....while I was asleep. When he was a month old Paul went to Korea for a few weeks for training...and while he was gone I went to my parents house. Well, right before he got back home I went home..didn't feel like sleeping in a hot room, so I beeded down on the floor in his room on a mattress (his room had the A/C) and I just took him to bed with me. Well, sometime in the middle of the night he found the side of my breast and I woke to a huge bruise on the side of my breast!!!! Had to explain that one to hubby when he got back the next day...he got a HUGE kick out of it....lol

Chelsea, that's cool that Mary gets all her nutrition from you! She looks good and healthy too!
Okay...got a question for you ladies. I've been taking the Reglan and Fenugreek and my nipples are very sore. Why would I be sore? I haven't been pumping more than normal. Could my supply be increasing and I'm just unaware of it? I *think* my breasts feel fuller to me but I'm unable to pump more out than I was pumping before starting the Fenugreek and Reglan. If my supply was increasing, would that automatically mean I would be pumping more? Would an increase in supply cause my nipples to be sore? And if my supply is increasing, I'm unable to pump all (well, most...I'd never get "all" of it) the milk off me, and Josie isn't nursing yet, will that cause problems?
Sorry...that wasn't one question but LOTS!

Tammy, if you feel fuller could have more milk, even though you're not pumping more. Pumping is just funny that way. If you do get a clogged duct because Josie isn't nursing you can work it out manually. Applying heat will help with that. I'm not sure about the sore nipples.

Nicole, that's great that the hand towel is working for you! Yay!
Kim, the hand towel was suggested for a woman to roll up and put under her breast to hold her breast up so that she doesn't have to while breastfeeding. (Keeps that hand free, which frees it up for things like holding a book or drinking water or eating a sandwich....)
Tammy, I just figure that some day when Josie is grown that she will literally be welled up with tears at your dedication to her. It makes *me* well up with tears for both of you. XO, Tammy!

PAIN!!!!!!! major pain....radiating from that area. Also you could tell if mastitis is setting up (clogged duct that is infected) because of pain...and because of what look like veins but not in the normal places and the lines will be red instead of bluish in color. Also hotness on the breast...or a fever. Those are all pretty good signs that it is mastitis.

My clogged ducts always started as a dull pain concentrated in one area. But if you stay on top of it you can hopefully avoid mastitis.

I need some opinions/thoughts please. Mary is becoming a pretty good nurser. Yes it has been four weeks, but we still have not really gotten it down pat yet. Using the rolled handtowel or cloth diaper (depends on where I am sitting and which side I am nursing from) helps quite a bit.
I am having a big difficulty with her feeding from my left breast. Every feed from that side she will choke 2-3 times. When that happens she lets go to cough (face turns red, hands flail, and she gasps for air to catch her breath) and milk goes squirting, more like shooting out every where. When she comes unlatched from my right side this does not happen. I am wondering, is she choking on my left breast because once the let down happens the flow is too fast/hard for her to swallow? It gets me frustrated because she will swallow so much air that she will not drink much. I will burp her and she will have a couple good belches, but afterwards she does not want to go back on. So part of me has this desire to feed her exclusively from my right breast and then just pump from the left side at each feed. Is this a silly idea? I just want to find some way to make nursing a pleasant experience for both of us.
The right side she nurses so good and will go for a good 20-30 min some times. On the left we are lucky to go 10-15.
