I have no experience with this but an idea popped into my head. Could you find a light gauze material to weave through the slats to keep him from getting stuck? That shouldn't reduce air flow much and would keep an arm or leg from going through the slat. S4L

They have a cottage on a lake, so I thought some outside toy would be good, but I just can't come up with anything!! What about a RIDE-ON? Isabel has this exact one. Wal-Mart usually has a variety of them, some are less than $20, I dont know how much you were wanting to spend, though. Also, something like THIS would be cute and practical, if they stay on the lake a lot.

I don't get the reduced air thing. Can't air come over top of the bumper pads? It's not like there's a lid on the crib. ???

I'm not trying to scare anyone, that was my personal thinking too...but then when was reading why Health Canada didn't recommend them, it kinda made sense. And now that you can get the breathable ones, they would be a good alternative. I just found that we never needed them. And, now that I've added them, I can't get the side of the crib up and down anymore. I'm probably going to take them out soon, he hasn't been needing the soother at night as much, so we might not have to go digging behind the crib every night.

This is the advice that was around in the UK when my two were babies, and is still given now: quote:
This is a piece of padded fabric which attaches to the inside of the cot. It makes the cot look attractive, gives a young baby something interesting to focus on and helps keep the cot draught-free. However, there are concerns about the safety of cot bumpers on two points: first, the danger of suffocation or strangulation if they loosen and the baby’s head comes into contact with them, and second, that by restricting the flow of air in and out of the cot they may contribute to the baby overheating. If you do use a bumper, ensure that the fabric ties which attach it are secured properly and out of your baby’s reach, and that the room temperature is well controlled. A cot bumper should be removed altogether once a baby is sitting, as it may be used as a lever to climb out. So, if they are properly tied and can't be reached by the baby, if the room temperature is properly regulated, and if they are removed as soon as the baby can sit up, no problemo.

ORIGINAL: Royal.Fortress Well, it does kinda make sense ... I just don't know how real the SIDS danger is. I can understand the suffocation risk and entrapment risk, but reduced oxygen air flow? I'd like to see scientific evidence of reduced oxygen 3 inches below where the bumper pad is . I think the issue with SIDS is there is just SO much that isn't known about it. Theoretically yes, in a crib with bumpers, you could have less O2 and more CO2 buildup than you would in a crib completely free of bumpers. So, because nobody really knows for sure, the experts, in my opinion, have to play it safe. I agree that it maybe doesn't completely make sense, but theoretically that "risk" is there. BTW Erin, cute avatar!

Janine, what is the blue thing that has caught his attention so much? You can ReaLLY see how much he's looking at it and not just the baby stare they sometimes have. Cute!! Ladies - I had a baby question... and now it's gone. Must be the chocolate cake I'm eating. OHH I remember when did you first put your littles in swings or bouncy seats? what age?

Brandy, I put one of those carseat inserts into the swing they make for infants so their head wouldn't fall down. And, the bouncy seat I got when Timmy had the spit-up thing going on, but I put Jimmy in it the day we came home from the hospital. The floor is not safe when you have a clumsy 20 month old LOL!
