freakofnature -> Gangs= "Crews" (5/1/2008 10:21:20 AM)

A utter failure by public policy makers in the D.C. area to completely misunderstand the gang culture. "We'll call them 'crews' now and then abracadabra, no gang problem... (psst, re-elect me because I am tough on gangs... uh I mean Crews)

quote:

D.C. officials insist on describing groups of young males as "crews," rather than gangs, even when they are held responsible for violent acts such as the wave of killings in the city last weekend. But police officials in other cities say the distinction is counterproductive.

Modern liberals/socialist/marxist/communists are masters at attempting the changing of words and/or the meanings.

stellaluna -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/1/2008 10:38:56 AM)

Well...I kind of hate to open this can of worms...but I've been part of a crew for about a decade now. I think it's long been understood that a crew doesn't engage in illegal behavior, but that doesn't stop our local police from classifying us as a gang for...classification...purposes. They don't pay any attention to us now because we're old and have kids [:D], but for many years we were watched along with local gangs "just in case."

Like calling a tax rebate, an economic stimulus package? Looks like the politicians on both sides do it.

Remember the old joke, "How do you tell a politician is lying?"......

I have a good friend of mine... he is a part of a crew too, in fact he plays keyboards at our church... He works for the county, he is part of a "road Crew" HAHAHAHAHAAA... This will backfire and really just legitimizes the havoc that GANGS create by calling them crews. "Crews" work on roads, "crews" build houses, "crews" are journeyman electrical workers. Now "Crews" are a kinder gentler version of gangs... that murder, steal, destroy and wreak general anarchy and mayhem on a particular community. Now they are a "business crew" It's ugly.

stellaluna -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/1/2008 10:59:35 AM)

I agree that classifying gangs as crews is bad business. But I also think "crew" in this context is a word that has not been part of the mainstream and so it's new to people.

Or calling it a rebate. I get nothing and a person who paid in nothing gets funds.

Shows how far "left" we have all moved on the whole in our elected leaders.

John McCain says he is a "conservative". I laugh in his face.

Well we finally found something that we both agree on 100%.

Uh-oh is that a sign of the end times?[:D]

earthless -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/1/2008 1:09:12 PM)

What an utterly dumb thing to do. As someone that worked in my department's gang unit/fugitive warrants unit - it is absolutely absurd to think that by changing the verbage that it will being forth anything positive or improvements in any given area.

mapachito13 -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/1/2008 2:18:12 PM)

I take it you don't feel it would improve the gang banger's self esteem to the point where he'll immediately cease any and all gang activity and go out and become a productive member of society?[:D]

Sometimes, changing how you refer to someone does get a response. I'm thinking if you walk up to a... crew gathering and call them "Cream Puffs" it will instantly make a lot of changes... in a lot of ways.

This time around, it couldn't be called a "tax rebate"....because plenty of people who paid $0 taxes got their "rebate"......and, those who paid the MOST in taxes, are "disqualified" and don't get anything.

Have you ever been able to fill out the rebate form, and send it in....and, then get your "rebate check" in the mail 6-8 weeks later....WITHOUT having to pay for the product????
Or, filled your rebate form out, and then get a letter several weeks later that since you "overpaid" for that particular item, and because of that, your "rebate" was now NOT VALID?

that's why it's NOT a "rebate"...it's an "economic stimulus package".....

with regards to "CREWS".....isn't that what "gang bangers" call themselves and other "fellow members" of their "crew"?

Not unless it's still 1989.

Today they will, most often, refer to the gang as 'the nation' or 'nation business'

well, then I am just as "behind the times" as those politicians are......

i guess there just isn't enough "gang activity" in my part of town for me to know "the lingo"....

earthless -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/1/2008 3:11:49 PM)

Maybe not in your part of town, but Dallas has a good share of it. Detroit (where you're originally from...) whew, Detroit is red hot.

davemiller7 -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/1/2008 3:12:47 PM)

Oh yes, back in the "bad old, unenlightened days," gangs were gangs and crews were crews, illegal aliens were illegal aliens not undocumented persons, being gay was being happy, joyful and carefree.......

Don't we all feel so much better now that we have nicer, more polite terms?

crime/economy/stagnation were all of the main reasons why I chose to leave "the old neighborhood" after getting out of school and on my own....

Yep...Dallas has them too, primarily on the south side of town....but, as you said, that's not "My side" of town....so, again, I am not aware of the "lingo" (nor do I care to be)...

HeadHome -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/4/2008 5:51:23 PM)

Actually, earthless, I recently attended a training session on gangs. According to the speaker, a local police officer, jails and prisons hold different "crews" - meaning that the self-identification of gang members as part of a "crew" is certainly happening where I live (upper midwest).

colliefan -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/4/2008 7:22:24 PM)

In terms of political word play, our local school board buses kids not on racial status - SC has ruled this a can't do - but on the basis of the number of free and reduced lunches served; and no school can be above a certain percentage.

As a result of this plan, they claim the have achieved "academic success in there are “no failing schools.” The dismal number of failing students remains the same, they have just shifted the numbers around so they look good. The voters last year passed a one billion dollar bond and now they are back claiming the teachers won’t get dental care unless we give them another billion.

tracydolls -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/5/2008 1:53:23 AM)

I cannot stand gangs/crews , whatever they are called today.

Some just moved in our block. They were out there fighting, whole bunches of them, talking about shooting the block up, someone called police. They had the nerve to go around asking "who called police., People need to stay out of their business."

bullys![:@]

I was like why does it matter who called? YOU[sm=error.gif].. You should'nt be out there fighting. You stupid [sm=growlwarning.gif] ..someone has to call the police to stop you .. you [sm=fireanger.gif], I don't want to know your business, keep it in your house!! I'm not gonna let you endanger my kids that want to play outside. You[sm=yummy.gif]..

my hubby[sm=angel.gif] answered the door, so I[sm=angertalk.gif] did'nt get to say it, but that's what I[sm=fireanger.gif] thought.

This culture [sm=usa.gif]glorifys "gangs/crews--- Al Capone is still a big seller of clothing/accessories. Look at the the show"The Gotti's.

I believe in calling a duck a duck, changing the name will not change the nature of it.

We are getting to a time in our lives, where we cannot tell the truth, want to be politically correct, that is the sad thing to me, we think if we call it [sm=flower.gif] it is not [sm=fireanger.gif]

That is not what I was arguing - as a law enforcement officer myself and someone that works closely with my department's gang unit/HIDTA team (for the second largest city in the U.S.) - I will say that the term "gang" is not being phased out or not used as some have said.

You can call it a click, a crew, a niche, the nation, my peoples, my folks, etc.. it's a gang.

davemiller7 -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/5/2008 10:45:09 AM)

The North Carolina schools and Wake County school system, in particular, is a disaster, but they keep getting the people with the same mindset elected to the school board. Thank God my grandchildren don't live in Wake County.

vixir -> RE: Gangs= "Crews" (5/5/2008 11:14:17 PM)

No matter what you call them, they're still the same people and nothing will change. They don't do the things that they do because society calls them "gang members". It's really sad and rather annoying how these people act. They're so tough because they have their friends and weapons. But how much you wanna bet that if they were weaponless and alone, they wouldn't be so ballsy?! This isn't meant to be offensive to anyone... it's just my honest opinion.
