Kath -> ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/1/2008 10:25:00 AM)

Welcome to the May PPS thread!

I don't know about anyone else but I am so looking forward to May flowers, warm temps and school getting out! Ah, being able to sleep in sounds so good.

When does school get out for you? Mike gets out May 16 and Linz gets out the 22nd. Dan comes home from College May 18, or that's the plan so far.

Rayoh -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/1/2008 11:33:05 AM)

The last day of school for my kids is May 16 also. I'm with you and can't wait to sleep in! Which actually I could always go back to bed when they go to school if I really wanted to but by then I'm up and awake. I'm just looking forward to not having to hear that blasted alarm clock!

Things are getting pretty crazy bringing everything to an end. Just the usual craziness of the end of the year. Activities banquets, academic banquets, spring concerts. Cheerleading meetings for the oldest to discuss uniforms, fund raisers, and camp etc.. that will take place over summer. Track just finishing up with the middle. Softball practice starting up with the youngest. Two relatives in the family graduating this year.

Loving the weather change. I gotta say I absolutely love where I live and have to love these small rural schools! My oldest (10th grade) came home last week and said for gym they went on a hike to a creek a few miles from school to go mushroom hunting. No luck finding mushrooms so they goofed off at the creek and enjoyed the beautiful day.

garsyt -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/1/2008 12:14:32 PM)

May 30th for us! 4 more full weeks!

BUT in those 4 weeks we have a LOT of stuff going on. Fine Arts day was yesterday, but we still have 4 field trips (one for each of my middle kids and 2 for the youngest, one is for girl scouts tho!), field day, the talent show, 8th grade graduation and all the stuff that goes along with that, and then the 4th grade teachers have decided to put together a little awards ceremony for those kids that parent are invited to. Oh and there is STILL soccer and birthday parties (my Ethan turns 9 in 2 weeks [&:] (where did the time go?)and Aryn is invited to 2 parties coming up one in May and one in June) and then Scout final meetings and award thingies too.

I'm loving the fact that I haven't had to fire up the furnace for a while now AND I've not had to turn on the air either!!!

I've got to pick two of mine up from school early today for dental appointments! Ty and Zoe today. I also need to stop by the library and pick up our holds!

Blessings,

Garsy

thisistheday -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/1/2008 12:25:01 PM)

I knew it was a new month, why am I always a little surprised when there's a thread for the new month?

MBee, it sounds like you have lots of factors to consider; I understand the cost thing and also the not wanting to wait so much longer.

Debilyn, we do have the dental through work. It does only cover half of things like crowns though. And they don't cover stuff like nitrous oxide at all. One time we were at the (pediatric) dentist with our son and some kid was in there upset and crying; definitely heard in the waiting room. We had to wait while they dealt with them. So they gave us the nitrous oxide for free that time.

Tomorrow is N's field day; it's supposed to be only in the low 60s tomorrow, and his is in the morning so not too much warmer. I'd better warn R that she will have to wear warm clothes, she's liking wearing summer things.

Saturday K goes to the music festival and plays her solo. I"m aggravated that she hasn't been practicing more on it. I should have been bugging her more I guess. She says it's too hard. Between her solo being "too hard" and having to be at the school at 6am I guessing she doesn't do this next year.

E says that 3 out of 4 of her teachers will be gone tomorrow. So she won't miss anything when she's out of class. Except she has to go to Am Hist for MAP testing for a while.

June 11 for us.

I'm looking forward to letting the kids sleep in while I have peace and quiet in the mornings.

PrincessDonna -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/1/2008 2:46:42 PM)

June 25th is Nick's last day and I'm not sure of Noah's, but it's probably the week before that. The 25th also happens to be the zoo member's picnic in the evening, and we usually bring Nick with us for that. It'll be a fun way to celebrate the last day of school.[:D]

Still no word on whether Nick will be repeating or doing summer school. I think they're watching him closely 2 more weeks, but honestly, I can't imagine he's going to catch up both academically AND maturity-wise in that time frame. I so hope we are able to hold him back, but if his mother disagrees, we may have no choice. Thankfully, the teachers (classroom and reading/resource) are the ones dealing with her and we have not said a word to her about it, so she doesn't know what we would prefer. And the teachers seemed to agree with us, so I hope, hope, hope...

Today is the National Day of Prayer. Noah's school went to a nearby town and did a little program there. I love him being in a school where God is the focus. It's worth every penny to me.

garsyt -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/1/2008 8:14:00 PM)

Ha!!!!!! Ty finally has a cavity!!!! No more bugging his siblings because he "never gets a cavity." Makes me so happy! He has got to do some serious brushing now! Zoe had one too, but they were able to fill it right there on the spot!
[:D]
I'm a strange mom aren't I?[:D]

Blessings,

Garsy

thisistheday -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/1/2008 9:41:22 PM)

Hey, if it'll reduce sibling harassment....[8D]

School gets out May 21st (after lunch probably) here. Seems a little early; I guess because of no days off between spring break and the end of the year.

Shells54 -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/1/2008 10:56:22 PM)

We get out of school here on May 23. The kids are beyond ready

PrincessDonna -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/2/2008 9:22:37 AM)

Garsy, yes, you are strange, but I also understand. I have one who picks on his brother for having to wear a pullup to bed, even though he pees the bed sometimes too.[8|] Last time he did that, I made him go to his brother and say, "I peed my bed last night, so if you're a baby, I am too."

Noah's elementary concert is today. It's a Veggie Tale one and Noah is a potato.[8D] He's very excited. It's a busy few days for him...concert tonight, a kids' worship camp at a neighbor church Saturday, Sunday is children's Sunday at our church (the kids do the whole service except for the sermon...Noah is on the worship team[:)]), and then Monday is AWANA closing and he'll get his three book Sparky award.

debilyn -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/2/2008 9:26:54 AM)

We're in school until June 5th this year. Next year we start August 19th, the following year we may begin a "year-round" school schedule. It will be presented at the board meeting this month for discussion. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet, as I see some benefits/problems with both sides.

thisistheday -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/2/2008 1:36:06 PM)

The concert sounds fun, Donna!

I can't imagine year round school, mostly because my oldest, and soon my next oldest most likely, like to spend a lot of time volunteering at camp in the summer. Debilyn, it'll be interesting to hear what they decide about that, and why.

I just got back from my son's field day. I think my four year old was ready to go home about as soon as we got there. It was cool (low 50s) and quite windy. It felt better when the sun was out. My son had left his jacket at school. At least I told him he needed to wear pants last night.

garsyt -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/2/2008 11:29:41 PM)

AARRGGHH!!!!! Brian's union and factory and whatever is about to drive me batty! The company is facing some rehiring of employees that took a voluntary layoff last fall and then a subsequent layoff AGAIN!! Two days ago the plan was to layoff according to classification, which would have meant Brian's classification would be getting 3 or 4 people back and 3 or 4 layed off and Brian would have been okay. Now tonight the notice came down, again unsigned by anyone, that they are going to be doing a straight seniority rehire and layoff. This would mean that Brian would be laid off and the company would have to retrain several of the rehire's into different jobs. It's just a big mess!

I swear I'm getting an ulcer over all of this.

So Brian sent an e-mail to several folks asking for clarification, asking for a union meeting, a chance to be heard. As we all know minds can change overnight.

I'm truly beginning to HATE this economy, as it is hurting SO many folks! I'm hating the fact that this stupid war in Iraq continues as it is taking up SO much of America's focus and funds, not to mention so many fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, sisters and brothers that are not coming home. I don't claim to have any answers. I just know that just when we start to get ahead and get a handle on things - something like this happens and I just want to scream! I also truly HATE election years. SERIOUSLY hate them!

Okay-

Ty has a couple of friends spending the night. Ethan has a soccer game in the morning should the weather cooperate.

I can't type anymore right now. Too frustrated and all. Please pray. I KNOW in my heart and in my head that God will make a way for us. I know that. Just pray I get out of this what he needs me to learn.

Just pray.

Blessings,

Garsy

ladyingrace1979 -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/3/2008 1:38:09 AM)

Garsy, you are in my prayers!

I am so frustrated with my 12 year old. I found out yesterday that she hasn't been turning in assignments in math. So now her grade went from a C, math isn't her strength, to an F. Then to add to that, I find out she got a detention because she didn't turn in some English stuff. She has a learning disability which affects her writing. Not the thought process but the act of handwriting. So the school has her using this device called an Alpha-Smart. She types her work into it, then goes before school and prints it. Well according to her she couldn't print today. If the computer teacher isn't in the room the office is suppose to let her in. This would work great if she actually asked them to let her in. So now she has 2 F's. If she doesn't pass these classes she will be kicked out of the magnet program and be back in the neighborhood school. I am so frustrated with her!

Thanks for listening,
Kim Q

Hello everyone. Just catching up on the thread.

Nathan got 100% on his behavior sheet this week! [:D] I let him pick two things out of his good behavior box for a perfect score instead of just one. He was so tickled.

PrincessDonna -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/3/2008 1:58:26 PM)

Garsy, that is so frustrating.[:@] Praying God's perfect provision for your family.

Kim, does she want to go back to the regular school?

Noah's concert was great. All the kids worked really hard on it and Noah surprised me with a solo. Of course, my batteries died in my camera after only 2 pictures, so that was annoying. I had just checked them the day before too! We took him (well, and all of us) out for ice cream afterward. He's really doing well in this school.

Does everyone know this coming week is Teacher Appreciation Week? Any plans for your kids' teachers? And do you give something to every teacher, or just their main classroom teacher?

No, but that is the consequence for any F's. She's got to get it through her head.

I'm glad the concert went well, you sound like one proud mommy! Yeah for Noah!

I usually wait until the end of the year for teacher appreciation. Not sure what we will do.

PrincessDonna -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/3/2008 2:12:32 PM)

We were going to do a gift card to a local ice cream stand as a "have a great summer" gift. I'm not sure if I want to do that this week. Maybe I'll just have Noah make his teachers cards and make cookies or something?? He has three teachers...his classroom, PE, and music/art.

garsyt -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/3/2008 10:20:27 PM)

I do do thank you gifts for our special teachers at the end of the school year. This year I'm buying some regular sized hershey bars and make some nice overwrapping sort of things to go around them. Except for Ethan's teacher - She gets a bottle of Pepsi that I'm going to decorate up some how.[:D]

Thanks for your prayers too! It means a lot to me. Lately I've been working on these scripture cards for a challenge on a scrapbooking internet community I belong to and recently I completed mine on prayer using this verse from Isaiah.

Isaiah 65:24
I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking to me about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!

This verse has been a great comfort to me over the past few days! What a wonderful promise! Then just last night I complete the card for the word Presence and found this verse in the Psalm.

Psalm 37:7a
Be still in the presence of the Lord and wait patiently for him to act.

It is so hard sometimes to be patient - but I need to remember to be still and wait.

AND finally -----

WAY TO GO NATHAN!!!!!

Blessings,

Garsy

Yay Donna

Yay Nathan

JuliaHop -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/4/2008 9:59:55 AM)

Teacher gifts...I need to do that this week. We gave the piano teachers boxes of Pepperidge Farm cookies. I still need gifts for homeroom, reading, and math. I don't know what to do about computer, spanish, library, art, and pe.

My adult children are finished with school for the year (one completely unless she wants to get a Ph.D). Life will hopefully calm down around here for a while. It is amazing how many people expect someone to have a career on the day they graduate from college! If I were my daughter, I would be ready to scream. She went to school full time to complete her master's in one year...when was she supposed to establish a new life??? The general attitude is that she is now graduated and we are to throw her out on her own.

Donna-I'm glad that you enjoyed Noah's concert and that he surprised you with a solo! [:D]

Garsy-I'm sorry that you are having to worry about Brian's job. [:(]

thisistheday -> RE: ...Brings May Flowers! May PPS Chat (5/5/2008 12:06:47 AM)

Yay Nathan!

Garsy, I hope you get good job news.

Busy weekend here.

K went to a music festival Saturday and got a 1 on her clarinet solo!

I finished hemming E's prom dress yesterday afternoon probably less than two hours before she was supposed to go to a friend's house for pictures. That was still a few hours before prom started though.[8D]

Pics here. The dark ones are of the arrival at prom, with everyone watching.

Anybody have a child who reads slowly? E needs to get The Fountainhead read for English. It has almost 700 pages, and this evening she says it takes her about an hour to read 10 pages. Then she said maybe I can concentrate better and read a little faster. So that did help some, she did make better progress this evening. I think that this book is hard because she finds it uninteresting, but I've noticed before that reading takes her a lot of time. I do tell her that it'll help if she just keeps reading.
