The Bible says that the Holy Spirit is present in every believer. If He wasn't present, that tells me there are no believers. I would suspect some of that is the problem.

I also have been in situations where there have been true believers who had been trained to both greive and quench the Holy Spirit. I was taught that way. He was still working in my life, but I didn't know how to listen to Him or How to obey what He asked because I had been taught some things wrongly. I see that going on in others and in other congregations. My original point was that we don't have the knowledge to know when we're being taught wrongly.

After having read this thread and thinking through this, I think the problem is that the Holy Spirit is missing. I do still think knowledge is a big part of that, but you can have knowledge and not use it in the Spirit. Also, the Holy Spirit leads those who are taught wrongly to a right understanding. It would be less of a struggle if we could just be mentored to and mentor to others true discipleship to Christ. So, it all seems to come back to the leading of the Holy Spirit no matter what problem I see other posters commenting on.

Reflecting on this, it has been very encouraging for me to realize and remember times I have experienced that the Holy Spirit is at work even when we are not faithful to lead believers to faithfulness.

Absolutely if truth is what they seek!

It is not always that the teaching is wrong, it is truth being dismissed or omitted from teaching and preaching.
Immature Christians need help and guidance sometimes. We all need to be challenged and this could also be something that is missing.

I agree. I constantantly am under conviction and learning to throw myself out of the equation and come to greater understanding of God as He revealed Himself. I expect to be doing so for the rest of my life.

What is missing from the lives of many Christians today?

Love.

"If you love Me, keep My commandments. 1 John 14:15

There are many individuals who say love is all we need, but love encompasses so much. Here's one commandment we--the average, every day christian have missed:

And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.--Mark 16:14

Do we keep His commandments? That's what's missing.

Yes! If we love Him we will do as He says.

I've observed that it is possible to be Christian and yet lack compassion. I understand that being a Christian does not mean that we will be perfect but it still disappoints me that there are certain characteristics that many Christians cannot seem to grasp and in fact, never will. For example, there are many who seem to have a talent for giving and it comes across as selfless and loving. Then you have those who are full of themselves and would not give you the time of day and they both will exist in the same heaven.

We can all change! Regardless of our experiences or our genes, we have the Holy Spirit to guide us and mold us into something that seems impossible to the world but is possible with God.

1Jo 4:20 - Show Context

And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

An individual who does not know how to show compassion and who never will and a christian that knows God are two mutually exclusive things, and NEVER to be confused.

But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? This is a rhetorical question. The answer is: It doesn't.

Love encompasses A LOT. A lot of people who think they love God and Know Him, aren't even in the area code--yet along the ballpark. Such will be the lot who say, Lord, Lord! And He says "I never knew you!"

Yikes!

A very sobering thought.

I know what the bible says and it seems apparent by their fruit that these folks are not walking with the Lord but I can't see their hearts or if they may change later.

In my flawed observations I may never see a change that satisfies me but it is not my call. My post was an observation of what is missing regardless of the state of the heart.
