I typically pay early ... if not the day the bill arrives, then on dh's payday. They are always paid by the due date (the exception being when I ended up in hospital having a baby on a bill's due date ... and even then it was paid the next day)

I pay my house payment out of the first paycheck of the month.

Other utilities are paid out of the second.

I don't believe in automatic debits.

We keep part of our emergency fund in our regular checking account so we have a nice buffer there in case a bill gets taken out before a deposit goes through. They eliminate late fees, and we don't have to worry about paying postage or buying as many checks. We wouldn't do it if we lived paycheck to paycheck, though.

It's taken a lot for me to trust automatic payments. And I only do them for a handful of things. One loan I have an automatic debit for because it took my electronic payment too long to get there the first time that it was late. So I let them handle that one. And my car insurance is cheaper if they take it out every month. I have a couple other auto payments that don't have online payment options. And that's it. Otherwise I forget what's due when and don't account for it in my checking account.

Lisa ... I can't tell you how envious I am of you ..... and how much you've inspired me to change my habits.

I pay all of our bills within the first few days of the month. We take our budgeted amount for the month out of our savings and put it in our spending account. As Dh gets paid throughout the month, we put the money into our savings account. I pay the rent on the 1st and when that has cleared I pay the rest of the bills. Our insurance and RESP comes out automatically throughout the month.

It works for us, because I'm strict with sticking to the budget.

Dave Ramsey's FPU has really made a tremendous change in our financial lives. We didn't start out on the right foot at all, and it's taken us several years to fix the mess we've made. It's still not a cake walk, but it's so much better than it's ever been before. [:)]

I remember when you were talking about that.

I've changed A LOT of my spending habits and really improved my financial situation in teh last couple years after taking a finance class. I'm not using any of the techniques I learned in the class anymore, but the class got me on the right foot and started me with good habits and such.

I keep using the excuse of the Cali economy as to why I can't do better. I wonder how much of that excuse is real and how much is just that ... an excuse. I've thought of getting a second job just to pay the debt down faster with. But can't decide if it's worth the lack of sleep and energy.

It's definitely a lot of hard work. The economy is pretty bad here, too. It's really hard to even find a job around here. We've never made a lot of money, but we've learned how to handle what we do make a lot better. God has been faithful. Without Him, we could never have come as far as we have. We still have a long way to go, though.

I haven't been able to pay most things ealy because things are tight, but the $2100 I got today (plus my regular pay) will change that.

I actually WANTED my CC bill to come out this morning on-line so I could pay it the day it came out. It didn't. It will probably come out tomorrow. My hope is, by paying all of them the day the come this month, I can keep that up. I alos wnat to see the difference between the interest from last month (when I paid closer to the due date) and this month, and see how much money I save.
