In_Him_Grace -> God's ability to "look upon" sin? (5/4/2008 12:41:31 PM)

I've heard many people talk about God being "unable" to look upon sin because He is so holy and righteous. One example often given is Jesus and the crucifixion, and the Father having to "turn away" from Jesus when all of the world's sin was placed on Him. So, if He is unable to look upon sin, then what about Adam and Eve? After they sinned in the garden, God actually sought them out and talked to them. And it seems to me that He had quite a bit of interaction with sinners and such in the OT. Am I mistaken?

Maybe I don't understand correctly. Could someone please explain this to me?

I believe God takes "no pleasure" to look upon sin. That is why sin seperates us from God because it is grieving to Him. Therefore, everytime we sin, God expects us to repent and turn from our wicked ways.

"Say to them, 'As I live!' declares the Lord GOD, 'I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways!" (Ezekiel 33:11)

Maybe He closes His eyes when He talks with sinners. Faith drives us closer to God in that to have faith we must trust Him.

The thing I keep thinking of is Habbakuk. The Prophet says of God "You are of holier eyes than to look upon evil..." in referrence to God bringing up a violent and wicked nation (Babylon) to destroy Israel. However, at the beginning of the next chapter, the Prophet also says, "I will set myself upon the wall, and what will I say when I am corrected?" Immediately after, it is recorded that yes, God is raising up darkness to overtake Israel, but that Babylon's judgement is following as well.

Persnickety point here, but God can look upon evil because He is omnipotent... it is sin that is affected when God looks upon it.

All I know is that I am infinitely grateful that when the Father looks at me, he looks through the saving grace of the Son, and sees me cleansed.

If God can look directly at satan, then God can certainly look upon sin. With that said, the bible makes it very clear that God takes "no pleasure" and "no delight" in looking at sin. Therefore, when God sees us sinning, it is grieving to Him. Sin separate us from God so we need to repent when we commit sin. But I agree, God can look upon sin. He certainly does 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.......

"But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out." (Numbers 32:23)

There is no scriptural basis for this belief. In fact, scripture indicates nearly the opposite. When Jesus Christ was on the cross, the Son of God suffered the full wrath of the Father, which is death. God suffered death on the cross, by bearing the full wrath of God so that humanity would not have to, so that men could have faith and be spared the wrath of God that they rightfully deserve.

If God is not able to look upon sin, He wouldn't have seen what was going on in Sodom and Gomorrah, let alone the sin that was in me.
