If I may use an illustration - there is only one way to write a sonnet. It has to have a certain number of lines, and those lines need to have a certain rhythm and rhyming scheme. If it doesn't meet these requirements, then it is falling short of being a sonnet. But within those guidelines, there is almost literally infinite possibilities about what a sonnet can express! Excellent analogy, MrFribbles. Very good! quote:
What music is "godly"? Gregorian chant. Anything later is evil.

I wish some one would make a Christian version of Guitar Hero. The background videos annoy me too much to enjoy the game. Basically, if the lyrics stink I don't listen to it (unless it is on a radio playlist...yes I do listen to secular stations. Really insulting lyrics will send me to talk radio). If the song puts the congregation to sleep, is it sinful? If the song gets the congregation wired because the pastor is trying to get the crowd worked up, is it sinful? Sooo many variables.

music in itself is good. Lyrics within music can be glorifying to God, or not. How they affect you, if you apply them, and if you worship them, are all things that depends on if its sinful or not. It's a personal issue, some may be convicted by certain music and some may not. Either way, we must be sure not to cause our brother to stumble in what we have freedom to do. God bless.

For the most part, I think so. However, I reserve the right to change my opinion.-Dave quote:

ORIGINAL: davemiller7 Ah, methinks it is the intent behind the music or lyrics writing.-Dave quote:
ORIGINAL: Conundrum quote:
But isn't putting Christian, or somewhat Christian, lyrics to rock 'n' roll music "blending in with the world?" If a Christian writes the music, not just the lyrics, is it still "worldly" music? What about certain music is "worldly"? Is it the beat? The chords? Do we all need to write classical music? What music is "godly"? So, what you're saying is that if a Christian writes "rock 'n' roll music" with Christian lyrics, it's okay and "godly" since the intent behind it is Christian? Good. We agree.

I'm still waiting to tell me that classical music is sinful because it never mentions God at all! (And was created by some questionable composers.) What about any other music that is instrumental? What about opera? What about music in other languages? Should we translate everything before we listen to it? etc. Now don't you know that is compromising instead because by no one mentioning Jesus in the lyrics that it is being watered down to appeal to the masses instead?

Only those whose bibles came with a "bonus" CD, produced and "burned" by God Himself....which contains a "sampling" of music & tunes which were personally "Selected and Approved" can know for sure. I never got one....but, I know several people that have! quote:
The only thing that makes me uncomfortable, are the occultic symbols and writings found on some cd cases. Many of those allegedly "occultic" and "satanic" "symbols" aren't what those people say they are.....

It's been so long since I've bought a CD that included liner notes, I don't even know what you're talking about.

i disagree that its evil. there are evil bands out there... sadly although their name is Lamb of God their songs are anti- god. bands like Neon Cross, Crimson Moonlight, and Demon Hunter, however are good bands. some songs from demon hunter are : the flame that guides us home, undying, storm the gates of hell, lead us home, thorns, the wrath of god, thread of light, fire to my soul, etc..... lyrics and the name of the songs i think make a band evil or good.... thats jus my opinion. yes i listen to Christian metal.....
