(BTW, what does "stoved up" mean? Apparently from the way you used it in your post, it's not anything near what I've always thought it meant when I've heard people say it.) May not have spelled it right, but may not be able to explain it the way it was meant, but am not as sore as I thought I would be today.

come from a land where coldest been in months was about 110 in middle of night, Missippi heat is nothing. I have pics of temps like 8 or 9 am in march in AR Ramadi in Anbar Province, it was 130+. now imagine Jesus walking the area with no water and food for 40 days and we today complain if we have to fast one meal((I have heard people complain. not saying us))). Jesus walked the area of Iraq in the 40 day fast. if He did in winter when is cold there, well He would have been soaked with rain. and the good Book didn't say He was rained on so must have been in heat. edited to add the month of year

Stove, in this usage, is the past tense of stave. When barrels were destroyed or broken (being made of staves), they were referred to as "stove in". It then developed as a general term for being useless or broken. Around here, people often use it to describe a condition of being sore or injured, often as a result of a fall or accident. A person who has a bulging or slipped disc in their back and is walking crooked may say "I'm all stove up." The proper reply is: "You need to go down to Cas Walkers and get you some of that Superderm Salve."

Thanks for the explanation, Kerr - and the history less as well - I LOVE learning about word origins. I am, however, very glad that I never heard the above reply before today . . . seeing as how I thought "being stoved up" meant one was, uhm, well, shall we say, unable to get one's digestive organs to function properly.

Thanks Kerr. SM, I think that word starts with a "C". And I don't mean "Crud" as Kirk explained it one time. But he used that word "Crud" and the Canadians thought he was talking about the other "C" word.

Most definitely. I just thought stoved up was a euphemism for it.

A little girl asked her mother, 'How did the human race appear?' The mother answered, 'God made Adam and Eve and they had children and so was all mankind made.' Two days later the girl asked her father the same question. The father answered, 'Many years ago there were monkeys from which the Human race evolved.' The confused girl returned to her mother and said, 'Mom, how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and Dad said they developed from monkeys?' The mother answered, 'Well, dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your father told you about his.'

I used to think I knew a lot (or at least something) till I came to the threads. Then I found out I barely even know diddly.

Wonder if she can make music like Bo D did? Reggie Sadler puts on a good impression of Bo during some of his concerts.
