I decided to start this thread after reading this quote from another thread about Joyce Meyers books:

quote:

ORIGINAL: YZGUY

I've heard mixed reviews - from "this has really helped me" to "she is about health, wealth & prosperity." I haven't read any, but I find it curious that she has a book on people pleasing and yet there is a big picture of her on the front cover.

I've been thinking about this too about her books as well as books by other Christian authors too. It used to be that book covers would have nice graphics on the cover and maybe a small pic of the author on the back cover or inside cover jacket. Now I'm finding more of these "christian celebrities" with their faces splashed across the cover of their books. If that doesn't scream "look at me" I don't know what.

What do you think?

I just happened to happen across this post just now and I can see what you're saying, but in this day and age of sooooooooo many authors out there, personally as a consumer, I think it would help me target in on a book much faster if you recognize the face. I so often forget exact titles, and specific topic but if I know the face...much easier.

I think we get a little off track when there becomes so much concern about stuff like this. If it's her message you're after to scrutinize (sp) then, hey, her face on the cover will help you on your journey that much faster. [:)]

I see it as merely a marketing tool, like the previous poster said. She has a lot of television exposure now, so people might recognize her face even if they can't remember her name- and be drawn to pick up the book.

Also keep in mind most covers are done after the book is written and edited. In a lot of cases the authors have no input where the cover is concerned. The publisher is going to put something that they think is going to sell the most copies on the front.

it's okay to put your name on the book, why not your face?

I guess it's no big deal. Hey I like a couple of Joyce Meyer's books :). Battlefield helped me alot back in the day when I was going through time emotionally. It's just strange to see these things more recenlty. I'll have to take a look next time I'm at the bookstore just to see..as an experiment..[;)]but I'm wondering if this is a common thing just among Christian authors or are secular ones doing it alot as well? I hope it's not mostly Christian authors cause then I'd be a little puzzled and maybe even a little concerned, especially if it's all about the marketing angle[8|]

marketing is necessary. this doesn't negate the need for a worthy product, but marketing has to be done.

Exactly. The publishers for the most part are the ones who choose the cover, not the author.

I have never gave much thought to her face being on the cover, what was important to me was what was on the inside of the book. I think we as people can be too judgemental at times, and not see things for what they are.
