My point is, saying we have the Bible is not enough. How does that body of believers interpret or understand the Word of God, this is the question. If having the Bible were enough, then why do we have all these various denominations and cults? There needs to be an interpretive voice which defines the meaning of Scripture.

Heavendweller

The reason the Bible is not enough is because many Christians bring their presuppositions into the reading and interpreting of the Bible.

When I was in collge (1969-1972) I was in a campus group that consisted of students from over 15 different denominations. We decided to study the Book of Acts to see how the early church believed and practiced. There were areas of controversy before we finished the second chapter. Yet, when we looked at it as the first readers would have looked at it (without our presuppositions) we were all in agreement.

How much more unity could we have in our churches and how much could we break down denominational barriers if we could just seek to look at God's Word as the first readers did?

God bless you as we search for a clearer understanding and implementation of His truths.

I read the Manifesto. It does not read like a theological doctrine statement or creed, but rather as a political/worldly statement.

It's amusing, but certainly not a Biblically accurate creed, and therefore it stands more as a statement of a certain group within a certain culture at a certain historical point.

I dont believe you would approve of it unless it contained every word from Genesis to revelation,

Please re-read my post #17, specifically this:
"Take a look at some of the earliest creeds, like the Apostle's Creed, the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed. Now those are statements about the revealed nature of God, focused on God."

Short, one page documents, that quite adequately focus on what God has revealed about Himself. Those are the type of statements that should start off a Christian declaration of purpose. "This is who God is, so this is who we are to be." We act in response to Him. You may think that the manifesto contains enough about the identity of God, but I do not.

I found this article on World Net Daily this morning. I think it sees through some of the agenda behind the Evangelical Manifesto.

Check it out and tell me what you think.

Here is a statement by Dr. Carner.

quote:

Further, reading the document sounds like an extended apology, and I do not apologize for the stance we have taken for decades: evangelicals are unapologetically and unabashedly pro-life, pro-marriage and pro-prayer. We believe that Christianity has been pushed out of the public square, and I do not believe such a “manifesto” will accomplish the aim of bringing prayer back in schools or rescuing the unborn.

quote:

We are not “owned” by any political party, but we will stand with and for candidates that are for our values, and against those values that we see as unbiblical, such as homosexuality and abortion.

quote:

Popularity is not the goal of an evangelical; Converted souls in heaven are the ultimate goal. You do not change a culture by surrender.

quote:

I shall continue to stand in the public square, without apology. I ask that my name be STRICKEN from the charter list of the Evangelical Manifesto. This is NOT a movement with which I am comfortable.
