I don't remember about Dick Cheney, but GW did sever in the National Guard. I served three years active duty in the US Army, but it was during "peacetime." Is that a problem too? -Dave quote:

Most of his time served may well have been spent politicking. He did what many connected individuals did : either got some type deferment or some cushy stint in the Guard. Back then the Guard was the place to go to avoid combat assignment. Only one Guard unit went to Nam in the entire war. Remember, the draft was in effect then, so every "able-bodied" male was supposed to serve a military stretch. I don't fault W for taking advantage of his connections because that was the legal way many young men took to avoid the draft. I do object to the notion that he "bravely served his country".

Four ANG tactical fighter squadrons--the 120th (Colorado), 174th (Iowa), 188th (New Mexico), and 136th (New York)-- alone deployed F-100s to Vietnam, served at Phan Rang AB, Vietnam, for eleven months of 1968-1969, flying over 24,000 combat sorties There are more than that Numerous individual Air National Guard personell filled slots in Vietnam flying and serving with active duty units. Am not going to stand by and let you write off the service of any of these people.

Don't you recall that so-called journalist named Rather?

Your last comment echoes my sentiments about naive "patriotic" platitudes! (How big is that soap box anyway? ) You enthusiastically defend the 2nd Amendment but NOT the 1st? Why do you not see that Mr. King has every RIGHT to air his silly opinion. When you can find where I stated that he did not have the right to say or write what he has, your post will mean something, until then I respectfully say it is worthless.

Setting aside GWB The ANG 147th Fighter Interceptor Group (which the ANG 111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was under operating F-102's) were conducting combat missions in Vietnam in 1968. Air Force F-102 squadrons had been stationed in South Vietnam since March 1962. But it's main mission remained airspace protection flying the air defense line in the Gulf of Mexico

Though, to his credit, the Viet Cong were held at bay in the Gulf of Mexico. The unit I was referring to was an Army Guard unit. Thanks for the clarification about the Air Guard. I have steered the thread off topic of Stephen King's comments and apologize.

In trying to get back subject here, I just can't help but think that the onetime novelist behind Salem's Lot, Carrie, and a whole slew of other seminal works, some outside of the horror genre, is probably trying to rejuvenate his scare-fest, career heyday by toying around a new kind of spine-chiller... to no productive avail! * *you know... making foot-in-mouth, political statements--especially when it comes to rehashing a "botched joke" by a certain Massachusetts Senator! 'Looks like ol' Stephen King is trying to follow in the footsteps of some of his colleagues, trying out politically-sermonizing/windbag horror stories, like that geezer of a zombie guy, George A. Romero, or that pretentious/pompous upstart, Eli Roth!

When I retired from the Air Force five years ago, they were still requiring every enlisted person to be a high school graduate plus they had the highest requirement of any branch of service on the ASVAB test. They also would not allow anyone convicted of a crime to enlist. As far as I know that has not changed. Mr. King may have a right to express his idiotic comments but in this case he has insulted every man and woman to ever wear a military uniform! I guess he does not realize that if it wasn't for them, he would not be able to utter his stupid opinions in public.
