What is it about guys reading in the restroom? Why is it necessary? To me, you leave germs on the reading material, and then some people I know, pass that reading material onto others. Since there's no way to clean the material, all the germs go with it.

Why don't guys just do what needs doing in the restroom without having to read, leaving more time for others to use the restroom and not being unhygienic?

McFatty -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/10/2008 1:27:44 PM)

I, for one, don't consider holding something in the restroom as unhygienic. There are no more germs on my hands while I'm reading whatever it is than before I went in. As for why I read something... it's about maximizing the use of my time I guess. It seems like a waste of time, even a couple of minutes, if my eyes are just staring at the wall.

broyce1981 -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/11/2008 5:31:51 AM)

I've never read in the bathroom myself, so I don't know.

mrtigger -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/11/2008 9:54:47 AM)

I don't do that either so I don't know. I know some guyes do but it doesn't seem to be common practice.

Perhaps it helps those guys relax and do their thing. Just a guess.

Guys restrooms hardly ever have a waiting line. If someone is reading on the potty, it's not likely an inconvenience to other guys.

ClintonPI -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/11/2008 2:12:22 PM)

It's funny, but in my experience, women apparently read as much as the guys. I always find books and women's magazines in the bathrooms of other peoples' homes.

cherish405 -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/13/2008 6:19:09 AM)

I don't read in the restroom. Don't know any women who do. I know somebody who reads National Geographic and the like in there and then passes the magazines on to others after he's finished reading them.

Germs are on doorknobs etc, so I just think that if you read in there, germs are going to get onto reading material no matter what you do.

TomTurn -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/14/2008 11:25:36 AM)

I like the newspapers posted over the urinal

CatholicCritter -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/14/2008 11:55:39 AM)

Germs are everywhere. Most are on your remote control and your computer keyboard, so your fear of germ warfare by reading in the restroom seem overblown. Besides, with 4 kids, I'd read while sitting on top of my weather vane if it'd get me some privacy.

I was going to say the same. On top of that, I know a lot of women that have no problem taking a telephone (cell or cordless) during a conversation, into the bathroom with them, but have yet to meet a male that does.

figmentPez -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/14/2008 6:02:29 PM)

Considering that a computer keyboard may be "dirtier than a toilet", I'm not inclined to think of reading on the can to be any more disgusting than reading online.

Oh, man, I have. It drives me nuts, the guy in the next stall talking so loud on the phone. Yuck! If you're having a "moment" don't answer the call--and don't make one; it's not spare time!!! I would not want you telling me that your calling me from the john. [:D]

SavedByGraceMD -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/14/2008 10:15:30 PM)

This is actually a funny topic. Why do men do it, i couldn't say. Personally I never did until I moved into an apartment with my 2 friends who did. It actually annoyed me because we only had 1 bathroom for 3 guys, and 1 of them would be in there for 30-40 minutes. Somewhere along the line I started to pick up on it and read in there myself, but since I moved out, I don't do it anymore. I always thought it was stupid because it kept you in there longer than you needed to be.

SavedByGraceMD -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/14/2008 10:18:00 PM)

Oh and the other guy used to take the phone in the bathroom with him, which was one of the reasons I didn't like to use the phone. I think that is disgusting.

cherish405 -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/15/2008 3:48:04 AM)

The thought of reading or using the phone in the restroom? Ick! [:'(][:'(][:'(] I just do my thing and get out of there!

APZR -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/15/2008 11:03:51 AM)

It's the only few minutes of time in the day when clients or kids aren't bidding for my attention. Readers Digest, although it's turned too liberal lately, and scanning the news paper can be done in 3 minutes or less. And besides that... if you look over and see a brown paper core, you at least have the news paper for backup. [;)]

humbleinspirit -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/16/2008 12:19:05 PM)

Its just something that we do while we are waiting to do our business.

Thanks, my first spit take of the day.

I read on the throne all the time. Beats staring into space or at the wall. especially at home where there's no good graffiti to read.

cherish405 -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/21/2008 11:42:21 AM)

LOL... then you would NOT survive in the early days of our Great-Grandparents. They kept corn cobs on a stick in a pale of water, didn't have TP... but did make use of the Sears catalog when available.

You're right. I'm glad I live now and not back then.

Then again, I'm sure they wouldn't have been reading in the restroom either. [;)][8D]

NewChristian1 -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/22/2008 10:39:57 PM)

I haven't read in the restroom since I became a Christian, mainly because the subject of the material usually found in a men's washroom is dirtier than the toilet you're sitting on. I usually feel like throwing it out.

It is silly to think that reading in the washroom could actually be considered as "productive time." Five minutes max and you should be out.

cherish405 -> RE: Reading in the restroom (5/23/2008 12:15:02 PM)

Unless you're thinking, I don't see extra time in there as being productive either. Then again, you can think anywhere. Doesn't have to be in the restroom. Do what you need to do and get out of there.
