OneOfHisJewels -> Double standards (5/10/2008 11:19:08 PM)

What are some areas you thing single men and single women are held to different standards?

I think one is that, while many christians are so ready to judge men for what they should and shouldn't look at in pictures, magazines, etc, what the women are reading in certain books and articles is often overlooked, when often women are reading things they should not be reading.

dsfuva -> RE: Double standards (5/11/2008 12:00:54 AM)

I've found that men who don't marry by a certain age are much more likely than single women to be judged as losers and to have their affectional preference questioned, even if they're committed Christians.

I think you're right, dsfuva. I had a single male friend for years, and his biggest complaint was that he "had" to date often, and as a result dated many women. This gave him the reputation of being a player. However, he said he preferred that to the stigma of the assumption that because he was in his late 30s/early 40s and never married, he was gay.

jazzlvr -> RE: Double standards (5/11/2008 6:59:36 PM)

Something I've noticed is that when a man reaches a certain age, people assume he's not married because he's immature and refuses to grow up and take responsiblity in life. But when a woman reaches that same age, it's assumed that she's an independant and self-sufficient lady.

If a woman works hard to keep a roof over her head, she's "too focused on her career.

But if a man works the same hours, he's driven and focused.

People assume that because I'm a single man, I can't cook

BugLady -> RE: Double standards (5/12/2008 12:09:25 AM)

I have no comment at this time... nope, no incriminating statements coming from me.

Cherry and strawberry are good for now. Pumpkin when it starts getting cold.

I only like blueberries and peaches in cobblers. [:)]

I thought of something that is a double standard.

If a woman is a single parent she is desperate for someone to take care of her, or living in poverty, or somehow got herself into that situation.

If a man is a single parent he's perceived as brave and amazing just someone who is going above and beyond what he should be doing.

Mind you...these are stereotypes...not my perceptions.

jazzlvr -> RE: Double standards (5/12/2008 2:44:05 PM)

I've had people tell me, "You have plenty of time."
I have heard these same people tell a woman of similar age, "You're not getting any younger."

Focusing -> RE: Double standards (5/12/2008 3:28:57 PM)

Relating to parents who work

... the man is taking care of the family, very responsible, dependable, reliable

... the woman who works is indicative of someone who does not love her family or she would stay home and take care of them
