Is anyone selling there car or moving to a Hybrid with gas prices?

hybrids cost an extra few thousand more to buy, so for many it makes sense just to get the non hybrid version .. it would take years of driving to break even on the added expense. The maintenance costs will be more as well. Plus the extra battery will end up in a landfill in around 8 years (the warranty on the Prius battery is only for 8 years). Hybrid's use gas at highway speeds so to get the best use of a hybrid you need to do a lot of driving at city speeds where it runs on the battery or around 45-50 mph.

I would if I could afford one. My mom bought a Prius and I adore it--it wouldn't work for us because of space issues, but the new hybrid Corrola probably would (or is that the Camry...). As for highway mileage, when I drove my mom's car on a trip two weeks ago, I got about 45 mpg at 70 mph....far better than anything I have ever driven.

The Camry comes in a hybrid version. The Corolla gets 35 mpg freeway (estimated) but its a smaller car and less expensive.

We are seriously considering it, and probably will make the change sometime this year. Most of our driving(well, mine anyway) is done in town so it makes sense to switch from my gas guzzling SUV to something smaller.

No, a couple of older paid off cars are cheaper to run than a newer hybrid with a loan.

I don't think it economically pays off. It would probably take fifteen to twenty years in gas savings to make up the increase in car price, maintenance, and replacement batteries. And it's doubtful that you'll keep a car for that long.

I "commute" 32 miles each way...in a 1997 buick....gets around 20 or so MPG. It runs great. It has 142,000 miles on it. Had it for years.... so, why get rid of it? Well I buy new, but I do a lot of research or buy online and pay cash. Then drive them until absolutely dead. It's worth more as scrap metal than for trade in when I'm done with a truck! [:D] Except for lately, they have been offering rates at 1 or 2% interest. If I needed another ride, I'd sure think about that rather than giving up my cash right now.

I just bought a bigger car a few months ago because we are expecting an addition to our family.... thank goodness for the most part I only use it to go to the train station every day (6 mi round trip....)[8D]

Buying something like a Pruis would cut our gas bill by nearly 75%, it would more then make up for the slight increase in our payment and maintenance on the Prius, from my research, is not that much greater then any other vehicle.

It would reduce my gas bill by about 2/3, which is looking nicer and nicer since with my new job I am spending an extra $250 a month on gas alone!

No they are ugly to me. I am in the process of buying a PT crusier. The gas milage is good, and IMO, they look great, though some do not like them.

Not until a hybrid gets about 75+ MPG without costing much more than a regular car. Until then, it's simply not worth it for me.

Can't afford it. My car is already paid off, so I'm stuck with it and don't mind it a bit.

LOL - I'm swimming upstream on this one & going counter-trend. Had to buy a pickup and went with a big noisy diesel. It gets about 18 MPG and sounds like silverware in your garbage disposal when it starts. Costs me $125-150 to fill it up. Makes the words of Alfred E. Newman come to mind re: energy prices: "What? Me worry?"

Not evil. Stupid. Big difference - at least evil people can still be smart. I bought a camper for my family to play around with this summer. Thought my wife's SUV would pull it. The trailer requires a certain type of hitch that can distribute the weight and get it off the SUV's back end. I didn't worry about it when I bought the trailer, because EVERY car today can accept one of those weight distributing hitches, right? Turns out there is only one car in the entire free world that can not take that type of a hitch, and we own it. I either had to sell her car (not happenin' - she loves her Land Rover), sell the trailer (not happenin' - the boy started crying when I mentioned the possibility), or buy a vehicle that could tow it. We now own 2 gas guzzlers AND an oil guzzler now.
