A broken toe on my birthday. What could be better?

I can't even believe that I have a broken toe. I can't walk. It hurts so much. Even if hubby was coming home at a decent hour tonight, we couldn't do anything together.

I hate this.

My ds2's birthday is today too...so they are all excited because we just got a bouquet of balloons. So, resting my toe is going to be pretty much impossible until they are asleep.

Also, since hubby is coming home late, I have to fix something to eat...

Argh...
Well, at least MOST of today was better than yesterday... lol

((((((((((((((Hillary!!!!)))))))))))))))))

May all your children bless you and go to sleep early and easily tonight.

BTW...it's cool that you share your bday with one of your kiddos. Noah and I share too.

Donna...you are the only person that I've ever known besides myself that share birthday with their child. Cool, huh?
Anyway, I asked in the health and fitness folder, but I'm sure that some of you don't check all folders regularly, so...any advice for my broken toe? I'm sure it's broken now. I can't put a shoe on at all. How long til I can wear my shoes again? Here is the advice I have so far...rest, ice, compression, elevation, and I've also heard that warm salt water may help...and taking pain meds. So, I have yet to rest...lol...that's pretty much impossible with three little ones running around excited about birthdays. Ice, I did...but it hasn't seemed to help the swelling at all. Compression, I have tried to no avail...and elevation...same as rest. I took 2 ibuprofen earlier.

Ouch, this really hurts.

Thanks for the happy birthdays, guys. It has been a not-so-bad day. Except for the toe, it's actually been nice. :)

I just broke my toe not that long ago. IT.SURE.DOES.HURT!!
I'm sorry Dear. All of that advice is good. Ibuprofen is a great medication to take if you're able, it's an anti-inflammatory, and will help very well with the pain.
Lots of ice, wrap it with med tape if you can, stabilization helps.
Sandy

VisitorinWaiting,

I'd recommend the homeopathic remedy Arnica.

You can also take more ibuprofen than a standard dose. You can take 800 mg every 8 hours or 600 mg every 6 hours. The rule is no more than 100mg/hr.

Cool... I never knew...now I know three. LOL

The ibuprofen seems to be helping a lot. I attribute it to that because the swelling still isn't down, so I don't think it's the ice or anything... I still hurt, even when sitting, but it's not as bad...walking still hurts, but I'm not limping as much. My toe is more purple and blue now than earlier, but I guess it will turn a lot of shades before returning to normal. I only have two ibuprofen left, so I'll have to get more tomorrow...get hubby to get it for me if I still can't get my shoes on. That hurts so bad ladies. I can't even explain how much it hurts when I put my shoe on....

He paid what he had and someone has blessed us by letting us borrow the other $100. We'll have that by Monday, so will be less than the week required by his convenience account. God is good!

Nicole...thanks for the well wishes.
For a while, my toe wasn't feeling that bad. I didn't take off my sock to look at it though.
I did when hubby got home...wowzers! It is soo blue and purple. It's so swollen. It makes me have the eeby-jeebies just looking at it... (hubby says that it's not eeby jeebies, but I like it better)
So, I laid down with hubby for a while, watching a TV program...then it started hurting again. I soaked it in warm salt water, then took more ibuprofen, and am now sitting with an ice pack on it...so, Lord willing, by bedtime, I will be feeling somewhat better.

Glad to hear the good news about paying the store, Donna. God works all things out for good.

Hillary, was it your big toe???? I broke mine before I was pregnant with Kali. She is 7 now. I was in an actual walking cast for it and couldn't wear regular shoes for quite some time. Then about a year and a half later, it was hurting really bad. I went to the doctor and he did take an x-ray and get this. It was STILL broken. I had to do physical therapy on it and all this other stuff, but I guess that a nerve or something got inbetween the broken bone and it had to be worked out. All I know is that when it is really cold outside, my toe is in pain, so be happy you live where you do.

But really, If it is one of your smaller toes, you can tape it to the one next to it so it doesn't move and heal funny. And tylenol or advil for pain. Heat feels better, but they will tell you to ice it. If it is your big toe, I am not sure if you can tape it, but you can try. Just try to take it easy and teach the kids how to play board games with you or do extra lessons for a few weeks so you can be sitting and off of it. The longer you can stay off of it, the faster it will heal. I hope some of this helped.

Happy Birthday, Hilary!

Broken Toe- Stay off of it as much as possible. Last time I broke my toe, I got a sore shin and then sore knee from trying to walk on the inside of my foot to stay mobile. I know you can't stay off it completely, but don't do anything that isn't necessary for the next two or three days.

I brroke my toe one night and went to an amusement park the next day. I had stubbed it (toe next to my pinky toe) getting dinner on the table. I wore sneakers to the amusement park and did OK. The toe is now a little shorter than it was but it wasn't too bad. It now matches the same toe on the other foot. I broke the bones in my foot on that side and so that same toe is shorter on both feet.

Lexie - UNBELIEVABLE! Is there any way to track the doctor down sooner than that? Those nurses need to be dealt with! RUDE. ugh

I don't know how to get a hold of him otherwise. But we've had issues in there before with a rude nurse and it was dealt with so I'm sure this will be as well. My mom and I were one of this doctor's first patients when he got out of med school, so he is good to us.

Brandy - that's awesome your mom is going to be able to come and visit!

Christina - congratulations on the move! Hopefully you get back here soon.

Maggie - that was a beautiful devotion, I'm glad you shared it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HILARY

That's cool about people sharing birthdays! We were hoping to have our children born in July since it is Dh and my birthday month, not to mention a lot of people in Dh's family. But Akeelah joined the others in December!

Have a nice trip Zippy!!!

Today we're having a bbq with Dh's family. My BIL turned 40 this month and Dh turned 35 this month, plus there are a few other birthdays, so we'll get together to celebrate it. We're heading to a park near the water, so at least the heat won't be too bad (but too bad we can't swim in the water....it would be fun, but I don't really see the need for a third swim, which is probably what you would grow if you went in that polluted water.)

Thank you all for the advice on my toe. Staying off of it all night last night was great. It was hardly even hurting this morning. My leg is sore though from laying in a funny position keeping it elevated. It did start to hurt once I got up and started going about my activities. I have ice on it right now. Hubby is supposed to get me some more pain meds today. He wants me to go out with him (and trust me, I do too), but I'm still not sure about the shoes. I tried them on a little while ago, and it still hurt A LOT. He said that if I didn't go, he would at least take two of the kids so that I could rest some more. Unfortunately, I didn't get to do a thing for my birthday...and likely won't today either. Not a big deal, but I would like to celebrate in some form or fashion. Hubby hasn't been home much because of helping family move....

Well, you all have a great day...a great weekend. I hope that by the next time I make a post, my toe will be feeling better. It's numb right now...lol.

Hi! I'm a SAHM, and just found your thread. I have 3 kids, dd13, ds4, and ds2. I lived in southern CA, and have been home with the kids for about 6 years. The boys, especially are a handful, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I hope I can join your group, and learn more about you guys.

Visitor, I wanted to mention that my mom (who has been a nurse for a gajillion years) has always said that if you are in bad pain, you can alternate Advil and Tylenol every 2-3 hours for best effect. There is no conflict with having both on board at the same time, but that way you have no downtime, where there isn't something in your bloodstream that is not at peak strength. Does that make sense? Like as the Advil is Petering out, the Tylenol you took an hour ago, is really vrooming along. As someone said (forgot who, sorry) you can take extra Advil, but never more Tylenol than recommended. It'll do a number on your liver.

Anyway... definitely try to think of creative ways to keep the kiddos occupied, and take dh up on his offer of getting them out of the house for a bit. I am of the opinion that birthday celebrations can be moved at will (at least in our house they are, lol). Move it to a time when you can ENJOY it, not be preoccupied the entire time by the infernal throbbing that is your foot.

OK, I guess that is enough completely unsolicited advice from a complete stranger, lol. Sorry if I came across as though I just burst in and started dumping a verbal bucket in the room. I do sometimes get on a roll. Oops!

Happy Birthday Hillary! Hope your toe heals up soon!

quote:

Maggie- sorry about your sister, that would be hard. How old is she? Are you the only Christian in your family?

The rest of my family are devout Catholics. My baby sis is only 17, and we're all just baffled. She was just a little one when my family left the cult, and was basically raised in the most loving, supportive, caring home imaginable, especially being "the baby". We can't figure out why she's so angry, and constantly giving the finger (figuratively) to my parents.

I am feeling like a slug today. There are things I could do and I just don't want to. We kind of got our day switched around and the kids already had way more time in front of the vcr than I think they should have, so I need to think up stuff to keep them busy.

Hey all. You won't believe my day. We felt prompted to go look at garage sales this morning. We have never done this before. It was hard getting out of bed, but once we got out we were on a roll. The first place we went to was a disappointment so Jason had this BRILLIANT idea to get a paper. We looked at a few, but then we noticed a 3 family sale on the outskirt of town. What we found there was something like CHRISTMAS.

First of all, it was in a really rich neighborhood. The quality of stuff was evident. (not that the 'non' rich part of town doesn't - but you know what i mean.) I have wanted sheets for a while, but didn't/couldn't pay the asking price. They had LIKE NEW jersey cotton sheet sets for THREE DOLLARS. I got two sets! Then htey had this BEAUTIFUL comforter set. I got that for FIFTEEN. I got two baby blankets I've wanted and paid $1.00 A PIECE vs. 10 bucks a piece at the store! Two BIG Beautiful purses for $2.00 a piece! Plus other really nice things cheap. Then we saw the boy clothes. All of the outfits were from baby gap and other pricey stores like that. We bought quite a few and when we were leaving the lady asked for my number and told me she'd call me when the sale was over and give me THE REST OF THE CLOTHES FOR FREE. No joke ladies, I ended up having TONS of clothes all the way up to 3T plus other free stuff she gave me when I went back. I'm trying to find someone who will want the newborn to 3-6 sizes. Even if the season is a bit off - the shirts will always work in our state all we have to do is buy a few pair of jeans. This stuff is NEW. I'm blessed, but very tired! We both are! lol.
