As I was looking through the Sunday ads I noticed a new Frank Sinatra best of ("Nothing but the Best"). It is being released (along with a stamp and other stuff) to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death. Crass commercialism aside I thought it might be a good time to bring him up. I personally enjoy the occasional Sinatra. I got a collection of his 60s Reprise label stuff. I might want to check out his 50s era stuff as I hear that was his peak. So, open tap on Sinatra. What are some of your favorite Sinatra concept albums? (suggestions welcome) Do you find him scmaltzy? Should Christians avoid listening to him? Do you have pleasant memories of your grandparents listening to him (see related topic in TV forum about Lawrence Welk)? Or whatever else comes to mind regarding Sinatra. Have at it.

He was controversial back during the day, however I liked his later songs such as "Theme From New York, New York."

ORIGINAL: humbleinspirit He was controversial back during the day, however I liked his later songs such as "Theme From New York, New York." That was one of his worst. He really messed up the lyrics. Remember that "AAAHHHHhhhhh" toward the end? He forgot the words there altogether. If you like that song, get Liza Minnelli's recording of it on the movie soundtrack. The best version though is Georgie Auld's instrumental, also from the movie. Back to old blueeyes. Never cared for him much, but he did have a good voice. His voice fit the Tommy Dorsey band really well.

I love the Chairman! He had amazing breath control. A lot of people are only familiar with the older Sinatra, the guy with the white hair who used the same style on every song he sang. You know, the guy Joe Piscopo did so well. But when he was a young man he had a great voice. He was probably the greatest of the crooners, a real master of the love song. That's the Sinatra I prefer. My favorite song of his is "One for My Baby, and Another For the Road". He did most of his best work during his years with Columbia Records. That box set is very high on my wish list.

I like Frank, just don't own much of his stuff. I have him singing with the Tommy Dorsey band, but that's about it. I do like the recordings he made for Capitol in the '50s. This thread is timely, in that I just saw "Frank Sinatra:A Man And His Music" on TMC this week.

I love Frank's voice. Such a difference from the breathy singers it seems are so popular today. With him, it almost seemed like you could not even hear him ever take a breath! One of my favorite albums (except I only have it on cassette) is Come Fly With Me!

My favorite song of his is "That's life". It just makes ya' hopeful, as much as any secular song can anyway.

The older I get the more I like him and singers like him. For some reason, my parents who were big band fans and Lawrence Welk fans didn't care for the chairman but his voice was very unique. Even though the indian casinos in CA have co-opted his "Luck, be a lady" and I hear that at least once a day during the afternoon news it still doesn't get old.

I bought a "Best of" recently that has almost his whole catalog. I enjoy it thoroughly, although I came to appreciate him only in the last few years.

ORIGINAL: humbleinspirit He was controversial back during the day, however I liked his later songs such as "Theme From New York, New York." yes...very "controversial"....as he was too much of a close friend to Sammy Davis, Jr. at a time when he "wasn't supposed to be"....(whites were just not supposed to fraternize/be friends like that with those "black people") he ignored the "public sentiment" of the day.....and good for him. I certainly admire him for that. Songs? wow....too many. "Fly me to the moon" (was great as the intro music in the movie "Wall Street").... "The Best is yet to Come" (Iam an eternal optimist....so, for me, Iam always know that the best is ALWAYS yet to come).... "The Coffee Song" is fun.

I looooooove Frank Sinatra's voice. For Christmas one year, I got a collection of some of his songs. Just recently, I pulled it out and have been cleaning my room while listening to it. I love the song "Taking a Chance on Love".

I have a fair amount of Sinatra music. One of them has a song called "I'm Homesick, That's All" - a song that soldiers would have heard during WW2. It is quite a tearjerker. I also love "I'll Never Smile Again" - another tearjerker song. A fun one that I have is called "Dick Haymes, Dick _____ (a Canadian singer whose name I can't remember), and Como". It is pretty funny, about how these guys are trying to come up and sort of steal Sinatra's limelight. I do love him in Guys and Dolls! As far as I'm concerned, his storyline with Adelaide is much more fun and interesting than Marlon Brando's part. I think he got the better part in that movie, even though I think he may have wanted Brando's part. I also think he has the best part in High Society. And I think he really was a good and diverse actor. I don't always like the way he lived his life, but at least it seemed like you knew where he stood on things. There may have been a lot of things about him that I don't approve of, but there were things that I do admire.

I like Sinatra, but I didn't "discover" him until after I was already a big band/crooner fan, mainly of Harry Connick Jr., who adores Frank Sinatra (and in my opinion sounds the closest to him!). Oddly enough, as much as I like this style of music, I only have one album: Romance - Songs from the Heart. I always loved "I've Got You Under My Skin", and the lyrics to "I Wish I were in Love Again" crack me up ("The broken dates - the endless waits The lovely loving - and the hateful hates The conversation - with the flying plates I wish I were in love again) Anywho, I actually always preferred Dean Martin and Bing Crosby over Frankie, but Old Blue Eyes still gets heavy rotation in my playlist.

I saw on the news yesterday that they just released the Sinatra stamp. Since I'm out of stamps, maybe I'll pick up some. All this Sinatra talk made me go home and listen to "Live at the Sands" last night. Sinatra and Basie, I'd pay a million bucks to see that show!
