Ironworker -> I have a crummy boss (5/14/2008 12:30:14 AM)

I'm an Iron Worker. We build bridges and sky scrappers. I work with a tougher talking,living ,filthy mouthed people. Tons of ex-cons ,in and out of county Jail and prison. That's my mission field. I'm working for a company that only provides enough safety concern to keep them from getting fined by O.S.H.A.Men have been killed working for this company. But that doesn't mean it was this contractors fault..... Any how today boss didn't provide water for his men. Each and every days the days are heating up. My work is basic hard work.Its in our Union contract employer must provide water for the men. All the jobs I've been on in last 28 years there has never been a problem. Well boss found out I was complaining about no water,He said" Is it Larry complaining?" " If he ask again I'll fire him!" I like the type of work I'm doing for this contractor,but don't like the boss,he won't say "Good Morning" Hello,nothing just barks out orders,to all.I told my union business agent about his words he laughed and said he knows this jerk and confirmed with cuss words what I've been saying and also told me there is tons of work in union hall . Its just I like the work. So shouldn't I be greateful that I even have a jerky boss at all rather then be a complainer? My Boss has the character of a thug!!!!![:@]

In the line of work you describe I’m not surprised by your boss’s behavior. Many people are out to get whatever they can and will run a con game to get it. If your boss is use to working with those personality types, sounds like he is, he may have developed his rather rude demeanor as the first line of defense.
Keep your nose clean and do the best job you can, he may lighten up after he sees your not out to get something for nothing. You may work for him, but remember who you will answer to in the end. And of course pray, he may be the “jailer” your suppose to reach! (Acts 16)

I'm also in an industry where loud, boorish behavior and non-stop profanity is the norm - doing what you do, I doubt you'll be able to get away from that. I don't expect to. But as far as unsafe operations and the guy not even providing water for his crew - those, IMO, are unacceptable. There are plenty of bosses out there who know how to run a safe operation and who treat their crews right. It might require moving, but I'd find a different company to work for.

Today we had to pull up some decking that exposed a hole that some one could fall through and get killed or seriously hurt. Normal protocol is to put up some yellow caution tape. This self centered pig said no just leave it.......... This guy has the character of a thug.Plus I have money in the bank and my bills are current and there is plenty of work in the hall. However if I quit this job there is nothing saying the next job is going to be better. Its like pulling a card out of a deck of cards... I know that I'm not going to fall through that hole.

How much are you willing to compromise when it comes down to a. your faith and values b. your safety and the safety of others. and c. your level of tolerance.

For those 3 reasons I would take my chances on the deck and find another job.

When an Iron Worker quits their job the trade vernacular is " Drag up" ( present tense) "Drug up"( Past tense) I don't like to drag up on jobs but its a perk of my trade ( At least when times are good,like now) This particular contractor I've drug up in the past on them only to be hired back by them the next week at a different location. All I know is I can't afford to get hurt I feel I have too much to live for. Yes of course God is in control if he wants me laid up so be it.I'm going to pray like everything depends on God( It does) I'm going to live like every thing depends on me. Yet I won't compromise our Christian faith and values. I feel like I'm between a rock and a hard spot.

Is there someone higher up you could speak with, that you could report the problems of this boss to and request a transfer of location within the company?

Not really the construction business is a different breed of cat. Best to just move on if a worker isn't happy.

Thanks every body for your advise . I'm now un-employed as of 12:00 Noon. Talked to my Union Business agent and he offered me a job starting today. But I'm not going to miss my singles Bible study and a nice Christian lady is counting on me to give her a ride to it. I feel like a load has been lifted off me. Don't expect there to be a problem with securing another job.

Ironworker -> RE: I have a crummy boss (5/16/2008 9:54:37 PM)

Well that chapter is over with . I start my new job Monday morning at 7:00 AM . Wages are the same and this job is 10 miles closer to the house. Thanks everybody for chiming in on my thread. My new boss is a Heavy drinker and crank user who has been abusive with his wife,but strange part is he's also a very fine journeymen tradesmen.
