It has just been reported that founding Rush drummer John Rutsey, who only played on the band's first album in 1974 before leaving the band to be replaced by legendary drummer Neil Peart, passed away this weekend at the age 55.

Rutsey may have not achieved the pinnacles of stardom as his successor on the drumkit did, but he did help bring Rush to attention on the first album by Rush in the early 70's on tracks such as "Working Man", "Finding
My Way", "What You're Doing", and "In the Mood". He left the band due to not only his diabetic condition which made it difficult to perform on tour,
but also due to his lack of interest in going into a more progressive direction, which the band found a willing participant in the literary-minded Peart. Guitarist Alex Lifeson kept in contact with Rutsey for years until the early 90's, during which time the former drummer became a body builder.

Pete Best and this guy definitely have something in common! I wonder how many other big rock bands changed drummers after the first album?
