Canned and Jarred foods are allowed, I took a TON of them with me to Puerto Rico after having food poisoning that required hospitalization while in Mexico. Oh, I did check them in my luggage though, I didn't carry them on with me.

I vaccinated my eldest 2, and I regret it. They won't be getting anymore vaccines.

My youngest I'm not getting vaccines for either. He had his 2 month, and I did NOT want him getting his two month, I only did it to pacify my father. But he hasn't received another one since. He also hasn't been to the doctor since he got sick a couple of months ago with a respiratory infection. :)

Kim, my 13 month old is still barely eating any solids. [&o] I agree with taking some jarred food. Maybe also some crackers or something. Although if you can't, buying bottled water for cooking and using a hot plate or something to make sure everything is thoroughly cooked would probably be a safe alternative.

The dangers are in the water, un-cooked foods (like salads), and meat that isn't thoroughly cooked.

I don't think hot plates are allowed in the resort rooms. I'll have to check.

Why can't my sister just get married in Canada??!? [&:] We really can't afford the trip anyways ... we're considering just not going because of the money + baby issues.

So, the more I read in the books, the more I think we are going to follow a schedule very similar to what Donna posted. (of course, I seem to find myself agreeing with a lot of things Donna says when it comes to parenting issues. [:D] She's a smart lady!!)

I never thought of the coorelation with vet medicine, but you're right...why do to our children what vets don't even do to animals?!

I'm not sure if every doctor records which thigh specific vaccines go in, but mine does. The problem is when you are doing more than one in each thigh, they STILL don't know what caused the problem. Also, many of the reactions are not localized to the injection site, so that doesn't help at all with those.

Gabby typically gets 2 shots at once, and I always have them put in the same thigh. She gets pretty tender(she will cry if I tough that leg) and it's hard to avoid both legs so we just go with one. Like Donna said, reactions aren't typically localized to the injection site so it's not one that I worry about.

As for ordering vaccines. You usually have to order them from the pharmacy with a prescription from your doctor. The only one I have heard of being done that way is the MMR, they should have all the separate components of Pediarix available.

Levi did have localized reactions...HUGE knots in his thighs. According to "the book", pea-sized knots are normal. Levi had half dollar size knots that lasted for months after. The doctor couldn't tell which vaccine(s) were bothering him though, because each leg usually had two shots in it each time.[:o]

Man, I am so glad we're not doing that this go around.

But still...those knots are considered minor reactions (yeah...minor if it's not YOUR kid screaming to high Heavens for days on end...). Major reactions are not usually localized, from what I have read.

I used to get those, Donna. They are part of the reason I've been putting of getting any boosters[&:] But still... I would rather the lumps both be in one leg when I'm getting her in and out of the crib and stuff.

At 12 months Nathan got large red knots/bumps from the MMR. They lasted for about a week and didn't seem to bother him to much. He did get fevers, though. One fever was 1-3 days later and one fever 7-10 days later (from the Chickenpox vaccine).

We fully vaxed our 2 older kids (3 1/2 & 2) but have delayed with our youngest (8 months) Boy am I glad we did! I have since been doing a lot of reading and study and I'm appaled at what I've found out.

David has his 1 month check up today. I wrote down the vaccine schedule I would like to follow (it is very similar to the one Donna posted a while back) and I am going to discuss it with his doctor.

may i jump in on this one?

i have 11 and 13 yo daughters. we will not be doing gardasil.

main reasoning is that the vaccine is way too new, without enough longterm info for me. i want to know what the effects will be in 10-20 years...and there have been some scary reactions reported.

we haven't been for well-visits sice it was recommended, and i dread dealing with it with our new ped, but i stand on this one.

side note: i was mortified last year when 13 yo's science teacher told all the girls taht they need to get it. come on, our vac decisions need to stay out of the classroom!

Do you mind discussing why? This is one I am not decided on for sure, and have 8 or so years before I need to decide. I wouldn't do it if she were old enough now, because it is so new. The reason I am not decided is because while I hope my daughter makes right and Godly decisions about sex before marriage, there is no guarantee her future husband will also. This is the schedule, Chris, the pediatrician, and I came up with together.

2 months- Pneumococcal #1
3 months- DTaP #1
3 1/2 months- IPV #1
4 months- Pneumococcal #2
5 months- HIB #1
5 1/2 months- DTaP #2
6 months- Pneumococcal #3
6 1/2 months- IPV #2
7 months- HIB #2
7 1/2 months- DTaP #3
8 months- IPV #3
9 months- HIB #3
12 months- IPV #4
14 months- HIB #4
15 months- Pneumococcal #4
17 months- DTaP #4

That's all he will get until he is 5. Then we will start the MMR series but give each separately and he will get the last DTaP and IPV. When he is older (preteen) he will get the varicella vaccine if he does not have immunity to chicken pox, the MMR booster, Tdap, and Hep A & B if he plans to leave the country for mission work.

FYI, I almost learned the hard way...

They have 'combo' shots that are supposed to help prevent injections into a child. They are now doing THREE Hep B shots (birth, 2, 4 months) and polio shots 2 months and FOUR months.

Thankfully I was informed and prevented all hep b and polio shots.

HA!!!! For once, a vaccine will be around long enough before my girls need it so that they can work out anything that needs working on. My kids always seem to be at the right age when the new vaccines come out and while I hate using them, I hate the thought of what could happen if I don't.

I have a friend who was working with the CDC when my son was born and I asked him about vaccines. That was so wrong of me because of course he gave me the speech that played on my paranoia. All of my kids follow the schedule according to what the state says, but if I had it to do over, I would probably have waited until the kids were at least two to start vaccines.

Are kids allowed to start school without MMR? Or will you homeschool? Just curious.

So you aren't doing rotovirus? It ain't fatal, but I watched my niece (an only child cared for at home by her mother) go through it, and it was nasty. But she lived to tell the tale.

Jae, can I ask why you aren't doing polio? Or have you already answered that somewhere else?

In most states, you can sign a waiver for any or all vaccinations if you don't want to vaccinate. You can do it for religious reasons, health reasons, or personal conviction. But if you don't vaccinate and your child is exposed to something they aren't vaccinated for, they have to leave school for something like 21 days depending on what they were exposed to.

EmilyAnn - just thought I'd mention that if you wait until 15 months to do the Hib, they only have to have one shot. I just read that a few days ago while making up a vaccine schedule.



I finally sat down and wrote out a vaccine schedule for our next baby. We are switching doctors, and I found a pediatrician who is fine with delayed and selective vaccinations. I didn't have a set schedule with dd, and I wanted to have one written out this time around. Dd has only had two of the DTaP at 12 and 18 months, and one IPV at 13 months so far. She will be 2 years old in two weeks. My schedule for her is:
DTaP - 24 months, 28 months
IPV - 26 months, 30 months
MMR - 32 months

For our little one coming in October, we are going to use this schedule:
DTaP - 12 months, 16 months, 22 months, 28 months
IPV - 14 months, 18 months, 26 months
Hib - 18 months
MMR - Somewhere between 24 to 36 months

I plan to home school. I don't think NC is as lenient about granting waivers as some other states are.

I have thought about doing rotovirus in place of the IPV and waiting until later to do IPV. I'm going to talk to the pediatrician about this at his 2 month visit.

We will not be doing the Hep A or Hep B until he is older (maybe 13 or so) or before his first mission trip.

That sounds like a plan, Emily. I know a few kids who caught rotovirus at church, so it's certainly not a daycare disease.

from HERE.....NC gives waivers for medical and religious exemptions.
HERE is a page where you can see the other states and what they accept.
