Okay. Of all the places I have lived, I have never seen so much parking on the lawn as I have here. What's with that?

It's illegal in our city to park on unpaved surfaces. (That would include lawns).

Of course, the law seems to be selectively enforced ... usually based on complaints, I believe.

I don't see a lot of parking on actual lawns around here - not very often anyway - BUT if folks could only park on paved surfaces - lots of folks would be in dire trouble! Lots of gravel and dirt driveways and parking areas around here.

We parked on our lawn so much, it turned into a driveway.[8D]

We're countrified folks here. People drive on grass all the time. [;)]

Where I grew up(sort of the boondocks) we parked on lawns all the time. Especially since we lived on the main road into our subdivision, it was safer with kids then parking on the street.

This is one of my pet peeves. I live in a historic neighborhood--a nice, well-cared-for historic neighborhood--and on my block, five of my seven neighbors park on the lawns. I have filed complaints, even though it's not technically against any city ordinance here.

Ditto.

I see no point in parking out on the street, when I can pull into my yard. I feel less...vulnerable, sitting in my yard. Both of my cars are parked in my yard - I mean, not like, in the front yard, and not rusting in the backyard like the cars and tractors in my neighbor's yard...but I don't see any problem with parking in one's lawn.

I can semi understand this if you have no driveway. All of the neighbors I have mentioned HAVE DRIVEWAYS. Three of them have driveways that stretch all the way from the street to their back fence! How much less vulnerable would your car be parked further back behind your house?

While I'm not personally a lawn-parker I don't have anything against it.

People don't do it here unless they have a specific reason (unloading, a large party, garage sale). Many times those same people have a lot of space along their drive so people can pull off onto the grass so movement into and out of the garage and drive can remain free.

I can see it if someone has many cars/folks living in the house because its easier than organizing and moving cars the night before.

I respect your point of view Stellaluna but I've had so much grief this year from people reporting things they don't like about our yard (vw bus, compost pile, leaving bikes on lawn) that I'm very mind-your-own-business right now. At this rate I'm going to have to move into the country just to get some peace.

I understand the mind-your-own-business thing for sure. Promise. I think it's kind of situational. For example, I would have zero problem with someone parking on their lawn temporarily. I don't understand why anyone would complain about your kids' bikes or leaves or whatever; that's just dumb.

On my block, my next door neighbor had three broken down mini-vans (i.e. flat tires and no windows) parked in the yard for several months. These vans had previously been parked in the driveway, but were moved for some reason and instead of using the driveway, they were parking their other three vehicles on the lawn as well. (We actually do have an ordinance against broken down vehicles on people's property unless they are concealed from view by fences.) Finally, these same people moved their broken down vans back into the driveway, whereupon they filled their yard with boxes. These boxes remained in the yard for three weeks, through several rain and wind storms, and began disintegrating. I was patient because I figured they were having a garage sale or something. Finally I couldn't take it anymore. I reported them.

Another neighbor parked his truck in his lawn and left it there to grow weeds around it. He would mow, but never cut the weeds. Eventually they were up to the windows of the truck. We have a weed ordinance as well. He didn't use his driveway in all that time. I reported him.

I haven't reported anyone who parks a vehicle on the lawn they actually drive. Just don't want you to think I'm a total you-know-what. But I admit I am also easily annoyed because I've lived in a duplex for the last four years and until about two months ago my duplex neighbor was a woman with an elementary-aged child. Both of them were completely disrespectful. We had to share a yard and her kid's toys were spread out all over it all the time; she would leave her bike in my driveway behind my car; they would leave trash on their porch that would blow over onto my porch. She never once mowed the lawn and every time it needed mowing, I was the one that would have to pick up all the stuff her kid left outside and pick up the trash. (Weed ordinance--remember?)

I think what people do in their backyard is their own business; I think what happens in the front yard should be common courtesy to your neighbors.

My BIL used to do this in a residential neighbourhood. They lived in a townhouse with a one car garage and a driveway that fit two cars. But with the number of people living in the house who owned cars, they ended up with 4. So they parked the extra car on the lawn. They had to because they weren't allowed to park on the street overnight, and even though they did this at first, they were ticketed.

No one seemed to mind in the winter, but when the snow melted, someone complained. They got rid of the car that was on the lawn, and later another car.

Then one of the other cars broke down, but they couldn't afford to fix it at the moment, so they were driving one car. The broken down one was a minivan so it couldn't fit in the garage. Someone called and complained about that car and they were told to move it.

That was really annoying because it wasn't like the car was up on blocks, it was just parked there for a long amount of time. That was nobody's business. But people are very nosy in that neighbourhood.

Everyone parks on lawns around here. Some of the places here are a real mess, too.

We don't park on our lawn, but we don't have to. We have an entire church parking lot to choose from. [:D] We also don't have grass in our yard yet, and we're trying to get some to grow, so we wouldn't think of parking there.

If someone wants to park on their own lawn, though, I don't see a problem.

Okay, thank you. I think it's very weird, unusual, but perhaps not. Makes a nice home for the mice, I guess. And hey! When they finally move it, they won't have to mow there!

While I don't normally park on my lawn, I do think that people should be able to do whatever they want with their property as long as it is not hurting anybody else. Unless someone else is paying for the property and paying property tax on it, then they have no right to tell you what you can and can't do with it.

The problem, as I see it, is that it does hurt others.

First, there is the problem of the ground water. Cars leak, often when we have no idea they are leaking. Those fluids seep into the dirt and down into the ground water, causing problems for both human and wild life, including the food we eat.

Second, many such cars are homes for the mice and rats, safe havens for other such beasts, making my neighboring home have problems as well, when the vermin go out at night, around my home and my trash cans.

Third, it makes the neighborhood look like a junk yard. If I were looking for a house, honestly (I don't want to be snooty, but this is the way I see it!), I would not intentionally buy a home near people park their vehicles on the lawn. It brings the property values down.

Also, around my neighborhood, it is always the renters who do it, because the ones who park on the lawn don't care if they break the water or gas line that rests under many front yards.

I agree. And where I live, there is no street parking. We have a driveway and it has been widened by our parking a bit to the side, to make room for the vehicles that are always coming and going here.

There is no danger of a regular vehicle crushing any pipes. Now a large truck...yes, maybe. When my husband drives his 10-wheeler work truck home, he is careful not to park over our well.

I've spent most of my life living in places where people didn't have the moxy to try and tell others what to do with their lawn. I suppose in the city though, where one gives away many controls of one's property rights, there are rules they're breaking.

They are two separate issues, I agree.

I think our city ordinance doesn't allow a car to sit in one spot longer than a few weeks in view of others--whether it's in the yard or in a driveway. That effectively gets rid of junk vehicles citywide, or forces the owners to keep them in their garages.

Parking on the lawn, like Bill said, is considered "redneck" or "ghetto" or "white trash" or etc. around here as well. But that doesn't stop people from doing it. I rent and I like this neighborhood, but I wouldn't buy a house in any block that had residents parking on their lawns. <shrugs>

Where I live, parking on the lawn is a considered the heighth of uncouthness! From this thread, I realize that in other parts of the country...not so much![:D]

We are surrounded by rednecks out here. [:D] And there are plenty of places with the old junk vehicles, too, but they aren't just parked--they are rotting in the weeds, along with the old tires, tractor parts, appliances, sinks, torn-up furniture, and other trash. It's kind of strange--you'll be driving along and see one of those kinds of places, and right next to it is a beautiful house with a clean, well-groomed, landscaped lawn. There's no rhyme or reason to it.
