As an update to a thread that I started last Summer on the same topic, would you go buy an HD Radio now that they are being advertised on the radio?

Would you want to get the new "free" stations, or does it seem to be a waste of money instead? I am opting myself that I do not see the big whoop on it and I am presently waiting. I am much more apt. to subscribe to Satellite radio instead.

It's bad enough you have to pay to watch tv, I'll go without before I pay to listen to the radio. They've survived this long without my money, I don't see any reason to change it.

HD Radio Info

This link should be helpful. Its from the HD Radio people but appears to be very informative. Here are a few points:

HD Radio is free (after purchasing an HD radio)

HD Radio has better sound quality

HD Radio has better reception (I believe, HDTV does and they hint that losing the reception is an issue HD Radio solves)

HD Radio has alternate feeds. For example the local rock station may have three different feeds, the normal (probably fairly bad) one you are familiar with, a second devoted to Grunge (yuck!) and (we can hope) the third dedicated to underground music. I noticed in the Tampa market many of these alternate feeds are Christian stations. In nearby Orlando, there is a Gospel "Jamz" alternate feed (An Urban Gospel music station is desired by many posters here). There is a link to check on what stations / formats are in your area.

Hope this helps. As for me, I don't listen to the radio much so I don't think I'm that interested. If there was somehow a $100 device I could plug into my current car stereo to get HD Radio I would do it but its a bit more complicated than that.

Thanks for the link Rufas, after looking at what is in my area, I am not too convinced to go out and buy one yet at all.

Yeah I felt the same way. Those alternate feeds increase the variety some. Its a step in the right direction (perhaps even a few steps) but there is a long way to go IMHO.
