The Bow Kim-ki Duk is back in his usual, enfant terrible form with this tale concerning a 60 year old man who 10 years ago, kidnapped a young girl, just so he can prepare her for marriage... that is, until a teenager interferes with this pseudo-idyllic universe, in the form of some dingy fishing boat. The movie seems to share much in (thematical) common with Kim's prior works such as The Isle, Bad Guy, The Coast Guard, and even Samaritan Girl, combining elements of (sexual) violent obsession, underage girls, the water (kinda like those old, French New Wave movies by Truffaut), Buddhism, and women as this "lady-of-the-lake," metaphor... sans Excalibur. This time around, I think the Korean art house shockmeister is showing more of his refined, and possibly less confrontational, and maybe less unsettling in the long run(?), audience-friendly part to himself: The Bow seems to be a lot more sentimental and restrained, even in spite of the disturbing plot premise. Who knew... but this almost reminds of the auteur's foray into period pieces like Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...
